UNLABELLED: Abscess formation is a rare cause of febrile illness in childhood but always has to be considered in such clinical presentations. Belonging to the resident flora of the oropharyngeal region, Fusobacteria are known to cause local infections; from here they may extend to other sites via the bloodstream or are aspirated into the lung (Lemierre disease). We report on two boys with Lemierre disease due to infection by Fusobacteria in monoculture causing two different clinical phenotypes. Case 1 presented with a large subphrenic abscess and pneumonic infiltration of the right middle lobe

Viridans-group streptococci, including the Streptococcus mitis/oralis subgroup, can cause peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis. The link between dental pathology and PD-related peritonitis remains to be fully elucidated. We report a case of an 83-year-old man undergoing nocturnal intermittent PD due to kidney failure from diabetic nephropathy who developed S. mitis peritonitis and septicemia traced back to a periodontal abscess. Despite having no prior history of peritonitis and maintaining good nutritional status, the patient presented with generalized abdominal pain and a low-grade f

Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common afflictions of the tooth. These infectious diseases cause considerable pain and discomfort and ultimately loss of the tooth. Apart from local effects, these infections may extend beyond natural barriers and result in complications that can vary in severity from the excruciating pain of acute pulpitis to life-threatening infections of the deep fascial spaces of the head and neck. In this article, the clinical and pathologic features of dental caries, pulpitis, periapical abscess, pericoronitis, and periodontal infections are discussed as

Periapical abscesses are common but may rarely be a subclinical infection in dental clinics. If an infection progresses rapidly or slowly as a tooth ache of chronic periodontitis with clinical features misleading the diagnosis, the dentists are able to recognize the salient signs and identify the patients at risk. This article reviews a case of a rare innocuous periapical abscess presenting as angioedema of upper lip with history of consuming nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac sodium whenever needed for arthralgia on a short-term basis.

A case describing perio-restorative management of an accidental trauma in the mid portion of root on an upper left canine tooth following an ostectomy surgery is presented here. The traumatized root area was undergoing fast resorption and a chronic periodontal abscess had developed in relation to the lesion. The article illustrates the clinical and radiographic photo series of a periodontal flap surgery done to gain access into a subgingival region for the placement of Glass ionomer restoration on the root and its periodic follow up. The clinical condition of the area suggests 8 mm clinical at

INTRODUCTION: Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a rare form of diabetes mellitus resulting from single nucleotide polymorphisms. There is a lack of evidence describing their periodontal condition and the management of these patients. The objective of this case report is to present the 6-month outcomes following non-surgical periodontal treatment of a patient diagnosed with MODY 5, the Renal Cyst and Diabetes Syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the periodontal presentation and non-surgical management of a 21-year-old patient, diagnosed with hyperglycemia (HbA1c

Odontogenic infections can spread to the respiratory tract. Despite the known role of Tannerella forsythia as the primary pathogen in periodontitis, the association between T. forsythia infection and risk of pneumonia or lung abscess remains unknown. In this report, we present a case of lung abscess caused by T. forsythia infection. The pathogen was detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of the patient. The clinical characteristics and possible mechanisms of the infection are discussed. T. forsythia is a conditional pathogen that can cause

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium spp. are strictly anaerobic microorganisms and normal flora of the oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal, and female genital tracts. It is commonly associated with periodontal disease, pharyngitis, mastoiditis, and tonsillitis, with a tendency to abscess formation.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors report a case of brain abscesses complicated by ventriculitis and obstructive hydrocephalus caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum of suspected odontogenic source. While repeated bacterial cultures remained negative, the isolate was identified using bacterial sequencing.
LESSONS: Empirical

The aim was to investigate the detection rates of periodontal bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Prevotella intermedia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans) and herpesviruses (herpes simplex virus-1 [HSV-1], cytomegalovirus [CMV], and Epstein-Barr virus [EBV]) in different forms and severity of periodontal disease, and to compare them with those in periodontally healthy subjects. One hundred and twenty-nine patients participated in the study: 39 diagnosed with periodontal abscess (PA), 33 with necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP), 27 with chronic periodontiti

A new periodontitis classification scheme has been adopted, in which forms of the disease previously recognized as "chronic" or "aggressive" are now grouped under a single category ("periodontitis") and are further characterized based on a multi-dimensional staging and grading system. Staging is largely dependent upon the severity of disease at presentation as well as on the complexity of disease management, while grading provides supplemental information about biological features of the disease including a history-based analysis of the rate of periodontitis progression; assessment of the risk

Dental sepsis or periapical abscess formation constitutes a large percentage of dental conditions that afflict horses. Dental sepsis occurs when the pulp chamber of the tooth is exposed to the oral cavity or external environment, allowing bacterial localization with resulting infection. Although acute, primary, septic pulpitis in horses is rare, dental sepsis often results from colonization of the pulp chamber with pathogenic bacteria secondary to maleruption or impaction of teeth with secondary alveolar bone lysis, primary fractures of the tooth, mandible, or maxilla, periodontal disease, or

The first clinical isolation of Eggerthia catenaformis, a rare novel bacteria from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and dental plaque samples of chronic periodontitis patients, is described in this article. This bacterium is a strict anaerobic nonspore-forming Gram-positive bacillus usually associated with brain abscess, intestinal, and pleural infections. Isolation of such bacteria from GCF and dental plaque samples of chronic periodontitis patients would be a rare novel case of its own, depicting possible oro-systemic relationship and possible evolution of oral dysbiosis.

Extracts of corn and some nuts were found to ubiquitously stimulate both adult and newborn cord blood lymphocytes to transform and produce a factor chemotactic for monocytes. This indicates that corn and nuts contain a mitogen and are potential stimulators of the cellular immune response. The exposure of lymphocytes to this mitogen in vivo might trigger a destructive inflammatory reaction in the surrounding tissues. These findings, therefore, suggest that foods such as corn and nuts may be responsible for some periodontal abscesses and may be contributing factors to the development of intrabon

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis, a black-pigmented, gram-negative anaerobe, is found in periodontitis lesions and its presence in subgingival plaque significantly increases the risk for periodontitis. We have previously shown that patients with aggressive forms of periodontitis that are seropositive for P. gingivalis have less attachment loss than those that are seronegative. This suggests that antibody reactive with antigens of P. gingivalis may be protective and decrease disease severity and extent. Recent studies in the murine abscess model and in the host antibody response in chronic

This study was designed to survey the incidence of Enterococcus faecalis infection in symptomatic and asymptomatic root canals of necrotic teeth using PCR and to isolate the bacterium for further screening. Sixty patients categorized according to their clinical symptoms were used for sampling by insertion of paper points into the root canals and absorbing all the fluids present within them. The samples were incubated in 1.0 ml 2xYT (containing 16 g bacto tryptone, 10 g yeast extract and 5.0 g NaCl per liter) for 24 h at 37 degrees C without aeration prior to multiplex PCR analysis. Lemierre's syndrome, oropharyngeal infections induced by anaerobic bacteria, leading to fatal septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and pulmonary embolic abscesses in humans, was diagnosed in a 6-month-old, male, New Zealand White rabbit. After acute onset of anorexia, lethargy, and depression, the rabbit died suddenly despite emergency clinical care. Necropsy revealed swelling, necrosis, and abscess in the soft tissues around the left caudal mandibular ramus, oral mucosa, and molar teeth, with systemic embolic abscesses and necrosis, especially in the jugular vein, lungs, and b
