When a radicular cyst-involved tooth is challenging to save, tooth extraction and cyst enucleation are required. Since only thin facial bone is present on the coronal side of cystic defects, bundle bone loss and continuity of the cystic cavity after tooth extraction may result in extensive vertical bone defects. To prevent major bone augmentation, the following procedure was performed: the left maxillary incisor (#9), which exhibited apical lesions was extracted, while the right maxillary incisor (#8), despite having a healthy periodontal ligament but being difficult to save, was transplanted

Apical periodontitis caused by root canal infection is the most frequent pathological lesion in the jaws, mainly manifested as periapical granulomas and cysts. Understanding of the formation and progression of apical periodontitis as well as the identification of inflammatory biomarkers can help increase the knowledge of pathogenic mechanisms, improve the diagnosis and provide support for different therapeutic strategies. The objective of the present article is to review inflammatory biomarkers such as cytokines, chemokines, inflammatory cells, neuropeptides, RANK/RANKL/OPG system and other in

Eosinophilic granuloma is a common expression of Langerhans cell histiocytosis and corresponds with typical bone lesions. The radiographic appearance of eosinophilic granuloma in the jaw is variable and not specific. It may resemble periodontitis, radicular cyst, or malignancies. The purpose of this report is to describe the characteristic radiographic features of eosinophilic granuloma of a 39-year-old male. The lesion in the anterior mandible was first diagnosed as radicular cyst because the radiographic findings were ovoid radiolucent lesion with well-defined border. However, careful interp

BACKGROUND: The radicular cyst is very common odontogenic cyst of the jaws, which is usually associated with a tooth with necrotic pulp. The cyst formation requires proliferation of the epithelial rest cells of Malassez present in the periodontal ligament. Proliferation of epithelial rest cells of Malassez is an essential event in the Pathogenesis of radicular cyst. The wall of the cyst contains epithelial cells, macrophages, fibroblasts and other cells. TNF is one of inflammatory mediators, which is produced by macrophages and monocytes. This study was carried out to investigate the role of t

Gingival cysts with clinical manifestations are relatively uncommon lesions. The present study adds thirty-three new cases to the literature and analyzes their clinical and histologic features. The mandibular cuspid and first premolar region was found to be the most common location. The epithelial lining of the cysts was of several types. The most common type was a thin, flattened lining with or without localized thickenings (buds). Other types included nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, and parakeratinized epithelium with palisading basa

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine how common maxillary sinus (MS) abnormalities are and how they relate to demographics such as age and gender using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). It also sought to explore whether these sinus changes occur more frequently in patients with dental caries, periodontal disease, or both.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this retrospective study, 170 CBCT scans showing MS mucosal thickening (MT) were selected from a larger group of 770 images. Twenty-five images were excluded due to poor diagnostic quality or because the patients were edentulous.
RESULTS:

Simpson-Golabi-Behmel Syndrome (SGBS) is an X-linked overgrowth syndrome characterized by pre- and post-natal overgrowth, typical facial appearance and multiple visceral, skeletal, and neurological anomalies. There is only few information in the current literature, on clinical and particularly dentofacial findings due to recent identification of the syndrome and its clinical overlap with other overgrowth syndromes. The aim of this case report is to present dentofacial findings in a 16-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with SGBS. Following comprehensive clinical, radiographic and histopatholo

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is generally considered uncommon, but several investigators claim there is a more frequent occurrence than previously thought. However these case reports lacked confirming data to validate their claim. On the other hand, it is possible that cases of central mucepidermoid carcinoma or later periodontal cyst might be viewed as glandular odontogenic cyst. This is a report of a case of a 70-year old male who presented with a firm swelling in the right side of his edentulous mandible. Radiographic examination revealed a multilocular radiolucent lesion in the mandibl

This article includes a comprehensive and up-to-date review on the cysts of the oral cavity. Several classifications of odontogenic (OC) and non-odontogenic (non-OC) oral cysts and the surrounding regions have been proposed. We suggest a new critical classification based on an established relationship between anatomical area, histological origin and clinical behavior (frequency, rate of recurrence, malignant potential). Moreover, the differential cytokeratin (CKs) expression of the various cysts is reported as epithelium-specific markers of differential diagnosis. Finally, issues related to di

INTRODUCTION: Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a rare form of diabetes mellitus resulting from single nucleotide polymorphisms. There is a lack of evidence describing their periodontal condition and the management of these patients. The objective of this case report is to present the 6-month outcomes following non-surgical periodontal treatment of a patient diagnosed with MODY 5, the Renal Cyst and Diabetes Syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the periodontal presentation and non-surgical management of a 21-year-old patient, diagnosed with hyperglycemia (HbA1c

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is an uncommon lesion accounting for less than 1% of all odontogenic cysts. This pathology commonly affects the anterior jaw and is prevalent in the second to third decades of life, with no sex predilection. The lesion presents with a variable clinical and radiographic presentation, which can simulate other common jaw pathologies. Therefore, histopathological confirmation stands to be diagnostic in COC. The fifth edition classification for jaw tumors of the head and neck by the World Health Organization has summarized the essential diagnostic criteria of COC a

BACKGROUND: The paradental cyst is an odontogenic lesion of inflammatory origin that has few clinical signs and symptoms apart from recurring acute episodes. A well-defined radiolucency associated with the roots or distal to the crown may be seen radiographically. The purpose of this article is to report on different aspects of two cases involving paradental cysts. In the first case, the patient complained about recurring pericoronitis. A semilunar-shaped radiolucency on the distal aspect of the mandibular third molar was noted on the periapical radiograph. In the second case, the patient's ma

To clarify whether fibroblasts could be involved in the pathogenesis of periodontal pocket formation, the chemotactic activity of radicular cyst-derived fibroblast-like cell (RCF)-conditioned medium (RCF-CM) for gingival epithelial cells was examined using a modified Boyden chamber assay. RCF-CM possessed significant chemotactic activity, which was decreased markedly by treatment with anti-human hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) antibody. Furthermore, the chemotactic activity of RCF-CM was well correlated with HGF content. These results show that the RCF secrete an HGF-like factor, and suggest th

Apical cysts are typically caused by dental pulp disease and are difficult to treat. In the majority of cases, surgical intervention is required. The rate of success after apical osteotomy varies between 60% and 91%. The introduction of platelet concentrates in treating chronic apical periodontitis is a promising direction for achieving quick and secure results. This article examines the healing of a sizable apical cyst after conservative surgical intervention and the application of platelet concentrate.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the expression of interleukin-17F (IL-17F) in apical periodontitis lesions.
METHODS: Human apical periodontitis lesions were collected after periapical surgery from November 1, 2009 to August 1, 2011. After histological processing, serial sectioning, HE staining, and microscopic analysis, 33 periapical cysts and 18 periapical granulomas were selected for immunohistochemical analysis for IL-17F. Five alveolar bone samples were obtained from a group of impacted third molars recommended for extraction. These bone samples did not show any inflammation and were used as normal
