Periodontal manifestations of systemic diseases and developmental and acquired conditions: Consensus report of workgroup 3 of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions.

BACKGROUND: A variety of systemic diseases and conditions can affect the course of periodontitis or have a negative impact on the periodontal attachment apparatus. Gingival recessions are highly prevalent and often associated with hypersensitivity, the development of caries and non-carious cervical lesions on the exposed root surface and impaired esthetics. Occlusal forces can result in injury of teeth and periodontal attachment apparatus. Several developmental or acquired conditions associated with teeth or prostheses may predispose to diseases of the periodontium. The aim of this working gro

Force eruption of mandibular second incisor in an 11- year old boy: a technical report.

There is a great challenge in the treatment of deeply fractured and un-restorable teeth among dentists. Orthodontic force eruption is a method of treatment for these teeth to preserve natural root system and periodontal structures. This technical report is a new modification of this procedure presented in an 11- year old boy with deeply fractured left second mandibular incisor. The fractured teeth were treated with root canal therapy and a file #80 was modified to become a hook cemented into the fractured tooth. Anterior teeth were splinted and used as anchorage to help the root extrusion. 1-y

Maxillofacial fracture repairs.

Oral trauma remains a common presentation in a small animal practice. Most fractures are the result of vehicular accidents. Among other causes are falls, kicks, gunshots wounds, and encounters with various hard objects ranging from baseball bats and golf clubs to horse hooves and car doors. Next in popularity are dog fights, especially when a large dog and a small dog are involved, and fights with other animals. With cats, falls from various heights are responsible for a large percentage of presentations.

Traumatic intrusion of permanent teeth. Part 3. A clinical study of the effect of treatment variables such as treatment delay, method of repositioning, type of splint, length of splinting and antibiotics on 140 teeth.

A prospective study of 140 intruded permanent teeth was examined for the following healing complications: pulp necrosis (PN), root resorption (RR; surface, inflammatory and replacement resorption), and defects in marginal periodontal bone healing (MA). The occurrence of these healing complications was related to various treatment factors such as treatment delay, method of repositioning (i.e. expecting re-eruption, orthodontic reposition and surgical reposition), type of splint (rigid, semirigid and flexible), length of splinting (days) and the use of antibiotics. Treatment delay, i.e. before a

Non-surgical approach to advanced chronic periodontitis: a 17.5-year case report.

This 17.5-year longitudinal case report details the treatment of advanced chronic periodontitis in a female patient commencing at 34 years of age. The woman was provided with periodontal care comprising of temporary fixation, scaling and root planing, intra-pocket irrigation using a root canal syringe and regular supervised maintenance. The patient presented with a 10-year history of bleeding gums. Therapy conducted in general practice had included simple curettage and irrigation. However, these treatments proved unsuccessful and the patient often changed dentists seeking better treatment. She

Spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets following nonsurgical periodontal therapy: a case report.

This case report describes the spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. A 3-mm diastema between the maxillary incisors was closed completely, and the mandibular teeth, which had migrated pathologically, returned to the optimal position. Clinical evaluation showed a significant reduction in probing depth, with increased clinical attachment and bone deposition demonstrated radiologically.

Immediate reimplantation of primary teeth: a histological study in dogs.

Reimplantation of primary teeth has been the subject of various clinical and histological studies, but very little is known about the effect of this treatment on primary teeth. The aim of the present study was to histologically evaluate the biological response of dog primary teeth after immediate reimplantation. Twelve dogs were divided into two groups according to postoperative time: 1 week and 3 weeks. Twenty-one upper and lower intermediate incisors were extracted and submitted to endodontic treatment, reimplantation and splinting. The 21 homologous teeth not submitted to treatment served a

Intentional Replantation - Small procedure, big benefits: A report of five cases.

Intentional replantation (IR) is a conservative endodontic procedure that may offer predictable results when conventional non-surgical endodontic treatment (NSET) or retreatment fails. The aim of the present report was to describe the management and outcomes of five cases of persistent apical periodontitis treated successfully with IR after failed NSET or retreatment. All the cases underwent IR involving atraumatic extraction, 3 mm root-end resection, retrograde cavity preparation, and sealing with intermediate restorative material (IRM), followed by replantation and stabilization with flexibl

Periodontal healing of replanted dog teeth stored in milk and egg albumen.

The type of storage medium used to store avulsed teeth prior to replantation has been shown to be a decisive factor in periodontal ligament (PDL) healing. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of storage medium on periodontal healing. Thirty teeth from three dogs were endodontically treated to prevent subsequent inflammatory root resorption. The teeth were atraumatically extracted and randomly stored in milk or egg albumen for 3, 6 and 10 h at 4 degrees C. All teeth were splinted for 1 weeks after replanting. After 2 months animals were sacrificed using vital perfusion-fix

The connective tissue graft wall technique and enamel matrix derivative to improve root coverage and clinical attachment levels in Miller Class IV gingival recession.

The case reports in this article describe a surgical approach for improving root coverage and clinical attachment levels in Miller Class IV gingival recessions. Two gingival recessions affecting maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors associated with severe interdental hard and soft tissue loss were treated. The surgical technique consisted of a connective tissue graft (CTG) that was placed below a coronally advanced envelope flap and acted as a buccal soft tissue wall of the bony defect treated with enamel matrix derivative (EMD). No palatal/lingual flap was elevated. In the first clinical

Protocol for treating the avulsed tooth.

Avulsion of a tooth requires decisive action by the dental practitioner. Replantation of the tooth at the earliest possible time, along with the avoidance of further periodontal damage, is paramount to achieving a successful result. The accident site, time the tooth is out of the socket, storage media and endodontic protocol influence the prognosis. Appropriate endodontic management and tooth restoration will ensure long-term success.

Management of subluxation injury in a thumb-sucking child: a case report.

This case report presents use of a custom trauma splint that was fabricated to prevent excessive thumb-sucking trauma to a previously-subluxated permanent incisor. A 10-year-old boy was referred to the clinic 10 days after falling in the schoolyard that resulted in a trauma to his maxillary left central incisor. The extent of clinical mobility stipulated fabrication of a custom trauma splint that would prevent further trauma to the incisor caused by excessive pressure of the thumb. A light-cured resin composite splint, covering the incisal edges of the central incisors and labial surfaces of t
