[Late results following treatment of peripheral nerve injuries of the upper extremity].

The authors re-examine cases of complete peripheral nerve injury of the upper extremity. Motor activity and sensibility assessment make use of Highet's scale. Some general principles of surgical treatment of peripheral nerve injuries are presented and individual factors which influence its results are worked out, e.g. moment of diagnosis, kind of nerve suture, moment of operation, age of patient, grade of injury, concomitant injuries, and length of graft. Conclusions are drawn for the concept of treatment.

Overexpression of EGFL7 promotes angiogenesis and nerve regeneration in peripheral nerve injury.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) often leads to significant functional impairment. Here, we investigated the impact of epidermal growth factor-like domain-containing protein 7 (EGFL7) on angiogenesis and nerve regeneration following PNI. Using a sciatic nerve injury model, we assessed nerve function using the sciatic nerve function index. We analyzed the expression levels of EGFL7, forkhead box proteins A1 (FOXA1), nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF), Neurofilament 200 (NF200), myelin protein zero (P0), cell adhesion molecule 1 (CD31), vascular endothelial growth

Characteristics of peripheral nerve regeneration following a second nerve injury and repair.

During the process of peripheral nerve regeneration, a single neuron can regenerate and maintain more than one collateral in a regenerative distal stump. Furthermore, some of the new shoots can mature gradually through remyelination and grow into the remote target organ to play a physiological function. Our study found that when neonatal nerve fibers are subjected to a second injury, the regenerative distal stump can regenerate and maintain more than one collateral in the second regenerative distal stump. The neonatal nerve contributed to the functional recovery of the nerve, but the restorati

Pleiotrophin cellular localization in nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injury.

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is a member of the family of heparin-binding growth factors that displays mitogenic activities and promotes neurite outgrowth in vitro. In vivo, PTN is widely expressed along pathways of developing axons during the late embryonic and early postnatal period. Although the level of PTN gene expression is very low during adulthood, activation of the gene may occur during recovery from injury and seems to play an important role in tissue regeneration processes. In this study, we investigated whether PTN was involved in the regenerative process of injured peripheral nerves. To ref

Advances in Exosome-Based Therapies for the Repair of Peripheral Nerve Injuries.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are the term used to describe injuries that occur to the nerve fibers of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Such injuries may be caused by trauma, infection, or aberrant immunological response. Although the peripheral nervous system has a limited capacity for self-repair, in cases of severe damage, this process is either interrupted entirely or is only partially completed. The evaluation of variables that promote the repair of peripheral nerves has consistently been a focal point. Exosomes are a subtype of extracellular vesicles that originate from cellular s

Regenerative Strategies in Treatment of Peripheral Nerve Injuries in Different Animal Models.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve damage mainly resulted from traumatic or infectious causes; the main signs of a damaged nerve are the loss of sensory and/or motor functions. The injured nerve has limited regenerative capacity and is recovered by the body itself, the recovery process depends on the severity of damage to the nerve, nowadays the use of stem cells is one of the new and advanced methods for treatment of these problems. METHOD: Following our review, data are collected from different databases "Google scholar, Springer, Elsevier, Egyptian Knowledge Bank, and PubMed" using different key

Motoneuron survival after chronic and sequential peripheral nerve injuries in the rat.

OBJECT: Surgical repair of peripheral nerves following chronic nerve injury is associated with poor axonal regeneration and outcome. An underlying possibility is that chronic injuries may increase motoneuron cell death. The hypothesis that substantial motoneuron death follows chronic and sequential nerve injuries was tested in adult rats in this study. METHODS: Thirty adult male Lewis rats underwent bilateral multistage surgeries. At initial surgery, Fast Blue (FB) tracer was injected at a nerve-crush injury site in the right control femoral motor nerve. The left femoral motor nerve was trans

Prevalence and distribution of peripheral nerve injuries in victims of Bam earthquake.

INTRODUCTION: In the early morning of Friday 25th Dec. 2003, the ancient and historical city of Bam in Southern East of Iran was vibrated by a big and horrible earthquake for 6.4 degree of Richter. About 30,000 people were died and about 30,000 victims and injured persons were the initial results of the earthquake. Almost all of the buildings were destroyed and all the people became houseless. In this study, 156 patients with peripheral nerve lesion (PNL) were assessed for their injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross sectional study since the second week after the quake until 6 months la

Photobiomodulation Triple Treatment in Peripheral Nerve Injury: Nerve and Muscle Response.

BACKGROUND: Muscle preservation or decrease in muscle degeneration and progressive atrophy are major challenges in patients with severe peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Considerable interest exists in the potential therapeutic value of laser phototherapy (photobiomodulation) for restoring denervated muscle atrophy and for enhancing regeneration of severely injured peripheral nerves. As previously published, the laser phototherapy has a protective and immediate effect in PNI. Laser phototherapy in the early stages of muscle atrophy may preserve the denervated muscle by maintaining creatinine kina

Thyroid hormone in biodegradable nerve guides stimulates sciatic nerve regeneration: a potential therapeutic approach for human peripheral nerve injuries.

It has been already demonstrated that thyroid hormone (T3) is one of the most important stimulating factors in peripheral nerve regeneration. We have recently shown that local administration of T3 in silicon tubes at the level of the transected rat sciatic nerve enhanced axonal regeneration and improved functional recovery. Silicon, however, cannot be used in humans because it causes a chronic inflammatory reaction. Therefore, in order to provide future clinical applications of thyroid hormone in human peripheral nerve lesions, we carried out comparative studies on the regeneration of transect

[State-of-the-art in peripheral nerve injury diagnosis and therapy].

The undulating characteristics of nerve fibers and the endoneurium are important factors in resisting traction force. The diagnostic accuracies of magnetic resonance neurography and ultrasonography for nerve injuries are 85.4% and 70.6%, respectively. Epineurial repair is the most commonly used nerve repair technique. Nerve grafts are generally required when the defect exceeds 2 cm. Nerve transfers are primarily indicated for brachial plexus root avulsions or intraforaminal lesions. Painful neuromas can be treated with target muscle reinnervation. Surgery yields reliable results for carpal-tun

Cell Heterogeneity and Variability in Peripheral Nerve after Injury.

With the development of single-cell sequencing technology, the cellular composition of more and more tissues is being elucidated. As the whole nervous system has been extensively studied, the cellular composition of the peripheral nerve has gradually been revealed. By summarizing the current sequencing data, we compile the heterogeneities of cells that have been reported in the peripheral nerves, mainly the sciatic nerve. The cellular variability of Schwann cells, fibroblasts, immune cells, and endothelial cells during development and disease has been discussed in this review. The discovery of

Temporal characterization of hyaluronidases after peripheral nerve injury.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is ubiquitously found in biological tissues and mediates wound healing mechanisms after injury by promoting cell migration and proliferation. With the development of tissue-engineered neural therapeutics, including off-the-shelf grafts for peripheral nerve repair, HA is an attractive material for clinical use because of its various biological roles. HA-based biomaterials have been carefully engineered to elicit specific in vivo host responses, however an important design feature that should be considered in these scaffolds is endogenous degradation. Hyaluronidases (HYALs)

Intraoperative peripheral nerve injury in colorectal surgery. An update.

Intraoperative peripheral nerve injury during colorectal surgery procedures is a potentially serious complication that is often underestimated. The Trendelenburg position, use of inappropriately padded armboards and excessive shoulder abduction may encourage the development of brachial plexopathy during laparoscopic procedures. In open colorectal surgery, nerve injuries are less common. It usually involves the femoral plexus associated with lithotomy position and self-retaining retractor systems. Although in most cases the recovery is mostly complete, treatment consists of physical therapy to
