[Peripheral nervous system and panarteritis nodosa. Review of 27 cases].

Twenty-seven cases of panarteritis nodosa (PAN) with peripheral neuropathy are reported. Diagnosis was based on pathological criteria of necrotizing vasculitis in 20 patients (group I) and on clinical, biological and sometimes arteriographic data in 7 (group II). The 27 patients (18 women and 9 men), aged between 30 and 78 years (mean: 53.4 years), presented either a mono- or multineuropathy (8 cases), a polyneuropathy (17 cases), or sensory symptoms (2 cases). A neuropathy was the initial feature of the PAN in 15 cases. The CSF, examined in 16 cases, was always normal, and results of electrop

Peripheral nervous system complications of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Among 421 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery, 55 (13%) developed 63 new peripheral nervous system (PNS) complications postoperatively. Most common was a brachial radiculoplexopathy, which occurred in 23 patients. Of these, 21 involved lower trunk or medial cord fibers. In 17 there was a correlation between the site of jugular vein cannulation and the side affected, suggesting that needle trauma played a role. Stretching from chest wall retraction may have caused some cases. Other deficits included 13 saphenous, 8 common peroneal, and 5 ulnar mononeuropathies. Six patients

Myelin development in the peripheral nervous system of Trachemys scripta.

INTRODUCTION: Myelin is one of the most important features of the vertebrate nervous system, formed by glial cells. In the peripheral nervous system, Schwann cells produce myelin. While much is known about the molecules and processes involved in mammalian myelination, little is known about it in other vertebrate groups. METHODS: In this study, we examined myelin development in the peripheral nerves of the turtle Trachemys scripta using qPCR, RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence, and TEM. RESULTS: Our findings indicate that in T. scripta, myelination begins during the late stages of embryonic d

Metronidazole-induced toxicity of the central and peripheral nervous system.

A woman in her 80s was admitted with a growing feeling of dizziness, tingling and vomiting that began a week before. The neurological examination showed dysarthria, downbeat nystagmus and gait ataxia. At the time, she was taking antibiotics (1 g amoxicillin and 500 mg metronidazole every 8 hours) following surgery for a mandibular abscess a month earlier.Brain MRI showed T2 and FLAIR hyperintensities in dentate nuclei and splenium of the corpus callosum, findings described in metronidazole neurotoxicity. Metronidazole was discontinued, with resolution of all symptoms except lower limb paraesth

Intrinsic neuronal network organization of a mammalian peripheral nervous system.

The vertebrate nervous system is traditionally parceled topographically into central and peripheral divisions. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) in turn is commonly viewed functionally as a set of nerves and ganglia transmitting input and output signals between the central nervous system (CNS) and other bodily systems to regulate physiology and behavior. Here, we collate and analyze neuroanatomical data on putative directed and weighted axonal connections between peripheral ganglia in a mammal (rat). The resulting network reveals a sparse but broad intra-PNS neuronal architecture with over 1

Peripheral nervous system adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) represent an effective cancer immunotherapy yet are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The aim of this study was to characterize irAEs involving the peripheral nervous system (PNS-irAEs) in a real-world cohort of ICI-treated patients. METHODS: Cancer patients treated with ICIs between January 2014 and March 2022 were included. Patients with PNS-irAEs were identified and divided into two groups: (1) cranial/peripheral neuropathies and (2) myasthenia gravis (MG) and/or myositis. Clinical characteristics and outcomes, measured w

[Hematopoietic regulation and tumor control by the peripheral nervous system].

The nervous system is distributed throughout all body organs and unconsciously maintains homeostasis. The peripheral nervous system, which comprises autonomic and sensory nerves, is distributed in the bone marrow, which controls hematopoiesis, and the surrounding bone tissue, which is also closely associated with hematopoiesis regulation. Recent advances in research techniques have revealed that the peripheral nervous system affects normal hematopoiesis, hematopoiesis under stress, and the regulation of hematopoietic aging. The peripheral nervous system also affects the development and progres

Peripheral Nervous System Involvement in Late-Onset Cobalamin C Disease?

Background: Cobalamin C (cblC) has a fundamental role in both central and peripheral nervous system function at any age. Neurologic manifestations may be the earliest and often the only manifestation of hereditary or acquired cblC defect. Peripheral neuropathy remains a classical but underdiagnosed complication of cblC defect, especially in late-onset cblC disease caused by mutations in the methylmalonic aciduria type C and homocysteinemia (MMACHC) gene. So the clinical, electrophysiological, and pathological characteristics of late-onset cblC disease are not well-known. Methods: A retrospecti

Fernando de Castro: Cajal's Man on the Peripheral Nervous System.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal developed his initial scientific career working alone. After the publication of his opus magna ("Textura del sistema nervioso del hombre y los vertebrados") and the general recognition of the scientific environments that crystallized with the concession of the International Moscow Prize (1900), the Spanish Government decided to officially support Cajal with a laboratory and the first salaries to pay collaborators. Is then when the Spanish Neurological School births: in 1902, Francisco Tello is the first one to be incorporated. With new additions, Cajal's work is complime

Optical cuff for optogenetic control of the peripheral nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: Nerves in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) contain axons with specific motor, somatosensory and autonomic functions. Optogenetics offers an efficient approach to selectively activate axons within the nerve. However, the heterogeneous nature of nerves and their tortuous route through the body create a challenging environment to reliably implant a light delivery interface. APPROACH: Here, we propose an optical peripheral nerve interface-an optocuff-, so that optogenetic modulation of peripheral nerves become possible in freely behaving mice. MAIN RESULTS: Using this optocuff, we

[Pathology of the Peripheral Nervous System in Guillain-Barré Syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome is composed of two distinct clinicopathological entities: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), and acute motor or motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMAN and AMSAN). AIDP is characterized by the patchily distributed demyelinative foci throughout the peripheral nervous system (PNS), whereas in AMAN/AMSAN primary axonal degeneration is observed in the PNS, particularly accentuated at the spinal nerve roots. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of previous findings regarding GBS pathology and thus, to elucidate the pathomechanisms

Extranodal lymphoma with peripheral nervous system involvement in a dog.

An 8-year-old neutered female Cavalier King Charles spaniel was evaluated for progressing right forelimb lameness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the right-side radial nerves and the caudal brachial plexus were swollen. The histological and molecular biological diagnosis by partial biopsy of the C8 spinal nerve was T-cell lymphoma. Coadministration of lomustine and irradiation was started. However, this therapy was ineffective. At necropsy, neoplastic tissues were seen extending into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord, liver, pancreas and kidneys as gross findings. A large mas

Treatment options in paraneoplastic disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

Paraneoplastic disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are the most frequent manifestation of paraneoplasia. As with the central nervous system, two categories of immune mechanisms are distinguished. On one side, antibodies toward intracellular antigens (HuD and CV2-CRMP5) occur with subacute sensory neuronopathy or sensorimotor neuropathy probably depending on a T cell mediated disorder (group 1). On the other side, the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) and peripheral nerve hyperexcitability (PNH) occur with antibodies to cell membrane antigens, respectively, the voltage gated

MR imaging of peripheral nervous system involvement: Parsonage-Turner syndrome.

A 55-year-old woman complained of right scapular pain, like burning, radiating down his right arm and numbness in the first three fingers of the hand. Neurologic examination showed a slight deficit of the right brachial triceps muscle. Neurophysiological assessment showed a mild involvement of the seventh right spinal root (C7). Conventional MR imaging of the cervical spine showed mild disc protrusion at level C5-C6 without spinal root compression. High resolution MR neurography with multiplanar reconstruction along the course of the right brachial plexus showed a mild increase in signal inten

[Neuronal regeneration and functional recovery following peripheral nervous system lesions].

INTRODUCTION: The complete traumatic sectioning of peripheral nerves start subcellular and molecular processes in the involved sensory and motor neurons that ends, in many cases, with a complete reinnervation of the sensory or muscular target. Nevertheless, the process is frequently disturbed, from a functional point of view, by the improper reinnervation of targets different from the original ones, a fact implying a partial or total lost of the involved sensory or motor function. METHOD AND AIMS: Results obtained with several types of axotomy and of experimental anastomosis carried out with

[Vasculitis confined to the peripheral nervous system: atypical clinical presentation].

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuropathy is a common feature of many vasculitic syndromes. In some patients, the neuropathy may be the sole manifestation of vasculitis. EXEGESIS: A 74-year-old lady complained of pain and weakness of the lower limbs. In her history, we noted right optic neuritis, monoclonal gammopathy and dyslipidemia treated by fenofibrate. Clinical examination showed proximal muscle strength deficit of lower limbs, with quadriceps femoral muscles atrophy. Muscle stretch reflexes were absent. There was no deficit in light touch and pain sensation, but proprioception was impaired.
