Sediments covering Arctic continental shelves are uniquely impacted by ice processes. Delivery of sediments is generally limited to the summer, when rivers are ice free, permafrost bluffs are thawing, and sea ice is undergoing its seasonal retreat. Once delivered to the coastal zone, sediments follow complex pathways to their final depocenters-for example, fluvial sediments may experience enhanced seaward advection in the spring due to routing under nearshore sea ice; during the open-water season, boundary-layer transport may be altered by strong stratification in the ocean due to ice melt; du

Best practices in laboratory culture management often include cryopreservation of microbiota, but this can be challenging with some virus particles. By preserving viral isolates researchers can mitigate genetic drift and laboratory-induced selection, thereby maintaining genetically consistent strains between experiments. To this end, we developed a method to cryopreserve the model, green-alga infecting virus, Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus 1 (PBCV-1). We explored cryotolerance of the infectivity of this virus particle, whereby freezing without cryoprotectants was found to maintain the hig

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates along food chains. The conversion of MeHg from mercury (Hg) is mediated by a variety of anaerobic microorganisms carrying hgcAB genes. Mangrove sediments are potential hotspots of microbial Hg methylation; however, the microorganisms responsible for Hg methylation are poorly understood. Here, we conducted metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses to investigate the diversity and distribution of putative microbial Hg-methylators in mangrove ecosystems. The highest hgcA abundance and expression occurred in surface sediments in She

A mercury-resistant bacterial strain has been isolated from a rock of the Idrija mercury mine in Slovenia. The rock had 19 g carbon and 2952 mg mercury (Hg) per kg. Mass spectrometry and DNA sequencing showed that the bacterium belongs to the Pseudomonas genus. It is called Pseudomonas idrijaensis. This bacterial strain is sensitive to methylmercury (MeHg) like the reference P. aeruginosa strain PAO1, and is resistant to divalent mercury (Hg(II)) in contrast to PAO1. This difference could be attributed to the presence of the mer operon yet deprived of the merB gene encoding the organomercurial

The fate and cycling of macronutrients introduced into estuaries depend upon a range of interlinked processes. Hydrodynamics and morphology in combination with freshwater inflow control the freshwater flushing time, and the timescale for biogeochemical processes to operate that include microbial activity, particle-dissolved phase interactions, and benthic exchanges. In some systems atmospheric inputs and exchanges with coastal waters can also be important. Climate change will affect nutrient inputs and behaviour through modifications to temperature, wind patterns, the hydrological cycle, and s

The risk of zoonotic disease transmission from animals to humans is elevated for people in close contact with domestic and wild animals. About three-quarters of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and potential health impacts of these diseases are higher where infectious disease surveillance and access to health care and public health services are limited. This is especially the case for remote circumarctic regions, where drivers for endemic, emerging, and re-emerging zoonotic diseases include anthropogenic influences, such as pollution by long-range transport of industrial chemi

BIOMEX (BIOlogy and Mars EXperiment) is an ESA/Roscosmos space exposure experiment housed within the exposure facility EXPOSE-R2 outside the Zvezda module on the International Space Station (ISS). The design of the multiuser facility supports-among others-the BIOMEX investigations into the stability and level of degradation of space-exposed biosignatures such as pigments, secondary metabolites, and cell surfaces in contact with a terrestrial and Mars analog mineral environment. In parallel, analysis on the viability of the investigated organisms has provided relevant data for evaluation of the

Global change influences biogeochemical cycles within and between environmental compartments (i.e., the cryosphere, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the atmosphere). A major effect of global change on carbon cycling is altered exposure of natural organic matter (NOM) to solar radiation, particularly solar UV radiation. In terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, NOM is degraded by UV and visible radiation, resulting in the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide, as well as a range of products that can be more easily degraded by microbes (photofacilitation). On land, droughts an

Humic acids (HAs) represent structurally heterogeneous supramolecular systems whose characterization by CP/MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy strongly depends on experimental conditions. Among these, contact time is one of the most important parameters controlling the efficiency of polarization transfer and the relative contribution of individual carbon groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of contact time on the apparent CP/MAS 13C NMR signal distribution of HAs isolated from different horizons of a permafrost peat soil (Hemic Folic Cryic Histosol) and to characterize their cross-

Microbial necromass carbon (MNC) is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to persistent soil organic carbon (SOC), yet its response to climate warming and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a global meta-analysis to assess how total MNC, fungal necromass carbon (FNC), and bacterial necromass carbon (BNC) respond to warming and to identify the key drivers. Overall, warming had no significant net effect on total MNC, FNC, or BNC across all observations, although publication bias-corrected analyses revealed a significant 8.6% increase in FNC

Terrestrial organic matter from surrounding primary vegetation is critical for carbon cycling in thermokarst lakes. However, the characteristics and contribution of this vegetation in shaping microbial community and affecting carbon emissions in thermokarst lakes remain poorly understood. This study quantifies the influence of lakeshore primary vegetation characteristics on microbial community and carbon emissions across lakes with different vegetation types on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Our findings indicate that methane (CH4) diffusion and ebullition emissions increase significantly fr

Human activities are accelerating permafrost thaw and subsequent methane emissions from increased microbial activity, prompting microbiome engineering efforts as an emissions mitigation strategy. We recently demonstrated that catechin amendment could drastically reduce methane emissions (>80%) in peat microcosms by enriching catechin-degrading prokaryotes that outcompeted methanogens for hydrogen. However, viral contributions to such microbiome-level responses remain unexplored and we hypothesized that viral dynamics could help shape the microbiome response as nutrient amendments may alter cel

Arctic permafrost soils are increasingly subject to thermokarst that is, abrupt ground subsidence caused by thaw. Wetlands can form within these depressions, leading to changes in organic matter decomposition and gas fluxes (CO2, CH4, N2O, NH3). Thermokarst wetlands tend to be dominated by graminoids, while surrounding upland tussock tundra tends to be dominated by mixed communities of shrubs and graminoids. To investigate how thermokarst alters the land-atmosphere exchange of C and N gases in Arctic tundra, we analyzed soil, porewater, above- and belowground biomass, and measured gas fluxes a

Human liver flukes of the family Opisthorchiidae, particularly Opisthorchis viverrini and Opisthorchis felineus, are major foodborne trematode parasites endemic to the Lower Mekong River Basin (Southeast Asia) and the Ob-Irtysh Basins (southern Western Siberia, Russian Federation), respectively. Together, these parasites infect over 14 million people, with an estimated 300 million at risk. Their transmission cycles involve Bithynia snails and Cyprinidae fish as first and second intermediate hosts, respectively, with humans and other fish-eating mammals serving as definitive hosts. The geograph

The seasonal and diurnal water relations were investigated within arctic and alpine populations of the dwarf willow Salix arctica. Marked differences that were habitat dependent (e.g. xeric vs. mesic) occured both within and between the populations. The environmental variables that most affected plant water balance and the bulk tissue water relations were soil water potential (Ψsoil) and the leafto-air water vapor pressure gradient (Δw), however, low soil temperature (<4.0° C) also had a marked effect in the wet to mesic habitats. The effects of declining Ψsoil and increased ‡w were most prono

We applied, for the first time, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology on Egyptian mummies. Seven NGS datasets obtained from five randomly selected Third Intermediate to Graeco-Roman Egyptian mummies (806 BC-124AD) and two unearthed pre-contact Bolivian lowland skeletons were generated and characterised. The datasets were contrasted to three recently published NGS datasets obtained from cold-climate regions, i.e. the Saqqaq, the Denisova hominid and the Alpine Iceman. Analysis was done using one million reads of each newly generated or published dataset. Blastn and megablast results were

A large alpine meadow in a seasonal permafrost zone exists in the west of Sichuan, which belongs to a part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. Due to the extreme climates and repeated freeze-thaw cycling, resulting in a diminishment in soil shear strength, disasters occur frequently. Plant roots increase the complexity of the soil freeze-thaw strength problem. This study applied the freeze-thaw cycle and direct shear tests to investigate the change in the shear strength of root-soil composite under freeze-thaw cycles. This study examined how freeze-thaw cycles and initial moisture content aff

Forest swamps are widely distributed in cold temperate regions, with important landscape and ecological functions. They are prone to conversion caused by complex factors. Forest swamp conversions involve forest swamping, meadow swamping, water body swamping, and conversion to farmland. An understanding of the landscape characteristics and primary environmental factors driving forest swamp conversions is imperative for exploring the mechanism of forest swamp conversions. We investigated the landscape characteristics of forest swamp conversions and quantified the relative importance of environme

Human activities related to the industrialization generated an overall rise of global temperatures with approximately 1 °C since 1880. These increases in temperatures have been accelerating since 1981, with the rate of temperature increase roughly doubling since the 1970s, the average warming rate being of approximately 0.18 °C to 0.20 °C per decade between 1970 to 2015. Even more alarmingly, recent studies indicate that this rate has accelerated to over 0.35 °C per decade since 2015, roughly the double of the previous period. The primarily contributor to the observed extensive climate change
