Effects of ingestion of chlorocholine chloride and cyclophosphamide on Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus infections in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus).

We investigated the effects of chlorocholine chloride (CCC), a plant growth regulator, and cyclophosphamide (CP), a known immunosuppressant, on the ability of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to resist challenge with a sublethal dose of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus ( VEEV ). The toxicants were continuously delivered in low doses in the feed; CP at 20 mg/kg body wt/day and CCC at 1, 10, 20 or 40 mg/kg body wt/day. Mice were inoculated with 3 X 10(4) plaque forming units (pfu) of VEEV after eating experimental feed for 23 days. Mice were bled daily for 7 days and at selected intervals

Pathogenesis of Vesicular Stomatitis New Jersey Virus Infection in Deer Mice ( Peromyscus maniculatus) Transmitted by Black Flies ( Simulium vittatum).

The natural transmission of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV), an arthropod-borne virus, is not completely understood. Rodents may have a role as reservoir or amplifying hosts. In this study, juvenile and nestling deer mice ( Peromyscus maniculatus) were exposed to VSNJV-infected black fly ( Simulium vittatum) bites followed by a second exposure to naive black flies on the nestling mice. Severe neurological signs were observed in some juvenile mice by 6 to 8 days postinoculation (DPI); viremia was not detected in 25 juvenile deer mice following exposure to VSNJV-infected fly bites.

Orally delivered fipronil-laced bait reduces juvenile blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) burdens on wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus).

While the topical acaricidal treatment of rodent pathogen reservoirs has been readily explored over the past several decades, oral systemic acaricidal treatment is only recently gaining traction as an alternative approach to the management of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. Recent laboratory tests have shown promise in the effectiveness of this systemic strategy against the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and a Canadian field evaluation was recently published, but no recent field data from the United States yet exist. With this research, we sought to field deploy a commercially available

Physiological Evidence for Delayed Age-related Hearing Loss in Two Long-lived Rodent Species (Peromyscus leucopus and P. californicus).

Deer mice (genus Peromyscus) are an emerging model for aging studies due to their longevity relative to rodents of similar size. Although Peromyscus species are well-represented in genetic, developmental, and behavioral studies, relatively few studies have investigated auditory sensitivity in this genus. Given the potential utility of Peromyscus for investigations of age-related changes to auditory function, we recorded auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in two Peromyscus species, P. californicus, and P. leucopus, across the lifespan. We compared hearing sensitivity and ABR wave metrics measu

SARS-CoV-2 virus infection of Peromyscus leucopus demonstrates that infection tolerance is not limited to agents for which deermice are reservoirs.

UNLABELLED: The North American deermouse Peromyscus leucopus is reservoir for several zoonotic agents, including bacterial, protozoan, and viral. It is remarkable for indiscernible or limited fitness consequences of these infections, a trait known as infection tolerance. But experimental infections have largely been of pathogens that P. leucopus naturally harbors. We asked whether infection tolerance extended to an agent, like SARS-CoV-2 virus, it had presumably not encountered before. Following protocols for experiments with mice and hamsters, we infected 8 female and 8 male P. leucopus of he

Lactobacilli and other gastrointestinal microbiota of Peromyscus leucopus, reservoir host for agents of Lyme disease and other zoonoses in North America.

The cricetine rodent Peromyscus leucopus is an important reservoir for several human zoonoses, including Lyme disease, in North America. Akin to hamsters, the white-footed deermouse has been unevenly characterized in comparison to the murid Mus musculus. To further understanding of P. leucopus' total genomic content, we investigated gut microbiomes of an outbred colony of P. leucopus, inbred M. musculus, and a natural population of P. leucopus. Metagenome and whole genome sequencing were combined with microbiology and microscopy approaches. A focus was the genus Lactobacillus, four diverse spe

Genomes, expression profiles, and diversity of mitochondria of the White-footed Deermouse Peromyscus leucopus, reservoir of Lyme disease and other zoonoses.

The cricetine rodents Peromyscus leucopus and P. maniculatus are key reservoirs for several zoonotic diseases in North America. We determined the complete circular mitochondrial genome sequences of representatives of 3 different stock colonies of P. leucopus, one stock colony of P. maniculatus and two wild populations of P. leucopus. The genomes were syntenic with that of the murids Mus musculus and Rattus norvegicus. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that these two Peromyscus species are sister taxa in a clade with P. polionotus and also uncovered a distinction between P. leucopus populations i

Different evolutionary trails in the related genomes Cricetus cricetus and Peromyscus eremicus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) uncovered by orthologous satellite DNA repositioning.

Constitutive heterochromatin comprises a substantial fraction of the eukaryotic genomes and is mainly composed of tandemly arrayed satellite DNAs (satDNA). These repetitive sequences represent a very dynamic and fast evolving component of genomes. In the present work we report the isolation of Cricetus cricetus (CCR, Cricetidae, Rodentia) centromeric repetitive sequences from chromosome 4 (CCR4/10sat), using the laser microdissection and laser pressure catapulting procedure, followed by DOP-PCR amplification and labelling. Physical mapping by fluorescent in situ hybridisation of these sequence

Infection with agents of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, lyme disease, and babesiosis in wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) in Connecticut.

White-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, were captured in southern Connecticut during 1997 and 1998 to determine the prevalence of infections caused by granulocytic Ehrlichia sp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and Babesia microti. Of the 50 mice captured and recaptured, 25 of 47 (53.2%) and 23 of 48 (47.9%) contained antibodies to the BDS or NCH-1 Ehrlichia strains, respectively, as determined by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) staining methods. The majority (83.3%) of 48 mice also contained antibodies to B. burgdorferi, as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Moreover, 20 of 26 (76.9%)

Parasitic and phoretic arthropods of sylvatic and commensal white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) in central Tennessee, with notes on Lyme disease.

Sixteen species of parasitic or phoretic arthropods were collected from 56 white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, live-trapped in central Tennessee from April through November 1987. Arthropod infestation was compared for mice taken from sylvatic (woodland) versus commensal (household) habitats. Three species were recorded from hosts in both habitats: the sucking louse Hoplopleura hesperomydis, the flea Epitedia wenmanni, and the laelapid mite Androlaelaps casalis. Twelve of the 13 remaining arthropod species were taken only from mice trapped in woodland whereas the phoretic glycyphagid mite G

Sin Nombre virus prevalence from 2014-2017 in wild deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, on five of the California Channel Islands.

Sin Nombre virus (SNV) is a zoonotic virus that is highly pathogenic to humans. The deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, is the primary host of SNV, and SNV prevalence in P. maniculatus is an important indicator of human disease risk. Because the California Channel Islands contain permanent human settlements, receive hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and can have extremely high densities of P. maniculatus, surveillance for SNV in island P. maniculatus is important for understanding the human risk of zoonotic disease. Despite the importance of surveillance on these heavily utilized is

Oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production in male prairie deermice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) in different reproductive conditions and group densities.

Natural and laboratory populations of Peromyscus exhibit a profound but reversible reproductive inhibition related to population density. Our earlier studies described the endocrine physiology of inhibited animals which resembles a condition of delayed puberty, but they did not reveal a primary mechanism for the induction and maintenance of the inhibition. These studies indicated that reproductive inhibition could be associated with an overall change in general metabolism. To test this hypothesis, oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) were measured in three groups of Pe

Characterization of the Peromyscus leucopus immunoglobulin germline repertoire and anti-OspA antibody response reveals conserved germline IGHV features among cricetid rodents.

Peromyscus leucopus (P. leucopus) is an important reservoir host for several zoonoses, including Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), the causative agent of Lyme disease. However, the immunoglobulin germline repertoire underlying antibody responses in this reservoir host remains poorly defined. In this study, we characterized the immunoglobulin variable genes of P. leucopus and identified 12 IGHV, 12 IGKV, and 3 IGLV gene families comprising 129, 87, and 12 genes, respectively. These genes exhibited similar usage patterns to those of Mus musculus (M. musculus). We also identified a high-dive

Chronic g-CSF increases the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and decreases plasma corticosterone concentrations in Peromyscus maniculatus without impacting compulsive-like stereotypy.

Increasing evidence points to brain-immune mechanisms underlying conditions characterized by neurocognitive rigidity. However, causal evidence remains elusive. Thus, the present work first aimed to investigate the naturalistic associations between rigid motor stereotypy and non-specific markers of systemic inflammation, i.e., the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and plasma corticosterone concentrations in deer mice. We then explored causal immune-brain interactions by bolstering the NLR, using the recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (g-CSF), i.e., pegfilgrastim (Peg). One-

Physiological and neuroendocrine responses to chronic variable stress in male California mice (Peromyscus californicus): Influence of social environment and paternal state.

Social environment and parental state affect stress responses in mammals, but their impact may depend on the social and reproductive strategy of the species. The influences of cohabitation with a male or female conspecific, and the birth of offspring, on the physiological and endocrine responses to chronic variable stress were studied in the monogamous and biparental California mouse (Peromyscus californicus). Adult male California mice were housed either with a male cage mate (virgin males, VM), a female cage mate (pair-bonded males, PBM), or a female cage mate and their first newborn litter

Could parasites destabilize mouse populations? The potential role of Pterygodermatites peromysci in the population dynamics of free-living mice, Peromyscus leucopus.

Peromyscus leucopus populations exhibit unstable population dynamics. Mathematical models predict instability with chronic parasite infections that reduce host fecundity when the parasite distribution within the host population is close to random. We examined the role the nematode Pterygodermatites peromysci may play in influencing the dynamics of these mice. There were seven gastrointestinal worms infecting mice. Pterygodermatites peromysci was the most prevalent and varied seasonally from 12.3% in November to 36.0% in July. Prevalence was higher in adults (30.8%) than juveniles (4.6%) and th

A light and scanning electron microscopic study of the epididymis active state of the endemic Mexican rodent Peromyscus winkelmanni (Carleton) (Rodentia: Muridae).

The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the epididymis of the sexually mature Peromyscus winkelmanni (carleton) was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The epididymis was divided into three regions: caput, corpus and cauda. The epididymal duct was lined with columnar and cubic epithelium with stereocilia and covered by a muscular connective tissue sheath. Capillaries appear to penetrate directly into the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue in the initial segment. The epididymal epithelium presents four cell types: principal, basal, apical and clear cells. Bas

Genetic diversity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto in Peromyscus leucopus, the primary reservoir of Lyme disease in a region of endemicity in southern Maryland.

In the north central and northeastern United States, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease (LD), is maintained in an enzootic cycle between the vector, Ixodes scapularis, and the primary reservoir host, Peromyscus leucopus. Genetic diversity of the pathogen based on sequencing of two plasmid-located genes, those for outer surface protein A (ospA) and outer surface protein C (ospC), has been examined in both tick and human specimens at local, regional, and worldwide population scales. Additionally, previous studies have only been conducted with tick or human sp

Blood samples from Peromyscus leucopus mice captured at an enzootic site in Connecticut were examined for antibodies to and DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi, to characterize the dynamics of infection in this reservoir population. From trappings conducted over the course of 2 transmission seasons, 598 (75%) of 801 serum samples from 514 mice were found to be positive by enzyme immunoassay. Seropositivity correlated with date of capture and mouse age, was similar among locations within the site, increased from 57% to 93% over the course of the transmission season, and was associated with antibodies t
