Persistent organic pollutants and penile bone mineral density in East Greenland and Canadian polar bears (Ursus maritimus) during 1996-2015.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are long-range transported to the Arctic via atmospheric and oceanic currents, where they biomagnify to high concentrations in the tissues of apex predators such as polar bears (Ursus maritimus). A major concern of POP exposure is their physiological effects on vital organ-tissues posing a threat to the health and survival of polar bears. Here we examined the relationship between selected POPs and baculum bone mineral density (BMD) in the East Greenland and seven Canadian subpopulations of polar bears. BMD was examined in 471 bacula collected between years

Mercury and persistent organic pollutants in native and invading forage species of the Canadian Arctic: Consequences for food web dynamics.

Contaminant dynamics within Arctic marine food webs may be altered through the climate-driven northward invasions of temperate/boreal species. Here, we compare tissue concentrations of total mercury (THg) and legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in native versus invading forage species sampled from 2012 to 2014 near Arviat, Clyde River, and Resolute Bay, NU, representing, low, mid- and high eastern Canadian Arctic regions, respectively. Concentrations of THg, legacy Σ-polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB) and Σ-organochlorine (ΣOC) pesticides were detected in all forage species,

Persistent organic pollutants and risk of diabetes and obesity on healthy adults: Results from a cross-sectional study in Spain.

Environmental exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been reported to be relevant in the population of the Canary Islands (Spain), especially that of organochlorine pesticides. On the other hand, the population of this archipelago presents a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and it has been recently reported that environmental chemical contamination could play a role in the development of this disease. We performed a cross-sectional study in a representative sample from this archipelago to evaluate whether serum levels of selected POPs could be considered as risk factors

Levels of selected persistent organic pollutants in blood from delivering women in seven selected areas of São Paulo State, Brazil.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in the living environment are thought to have detrimental health effects on the population, with pregnant women and the developing foetus being at highest risk. We report on the levels of selected POPs in maternal blood of 155 delivering women residing in seven regions within the São Paulo State, Brazil. The following selected POPs were measured in the maternal whole blood: 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners (IUPAC Nos. 99, 101, 118, 138, 153, 156, 163, 170, 180, 183, 187, 194); dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane p,p'-DDT, diphenyldichloroeth

The relationship between persistent organic pollutants in maternal and neonatal tissues and immune responses to allergens: A novel exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Modern persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contamination are logical candidates in the investigation of the, as yet, unexplained association between allergic disease and progressive industrialisation. POPs have been detected in human cord blood, placental tissues and breast milk, and the reported association between cord blood IgE levels and cord/placental POP levels has raised concerns about potential immunological effects in early life. METHODS: The initial aim of this study was to determine if POPs were detectable in maternal blood, cord blood, placental tissues, adipose tissu

Nature-Inspired Hybrid Photocatalytic System for Degradation of Persistent Organic Pollutants, Including Pharmaceutical Remains Using Solar-Driven Continuous Flow Reactor.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic reactors for wastewater treatment have become a growing hot topic among researchers owing to their inexpensiveness, scalable potential, and minimal ecological impact. Herein, we have utilized 3D printing to fabricate a packed bed reactor (PBR) consisting of an open serpentine channel packed with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) coated onto silica nanoparticles (SiO2) incorporated on cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) that is ZnO@SiO2@CNC. This developed PBR overcomes the expensive and time-consuming limitations of batch reactors with continuous flow mass treatment of per

Elephant Seal Blubber Under Multiple Stressors: Persistent Organic Pollutants, Stress Hormones and Hydrostatic Pressure Alter Transcriptome, Lipolysis and Leptin Secretion.

Anthropogenic stressors represent major threats to marine mammals. Yet, their combined effects on health remain poorly understood. To address this, precision-cut adipose tissue slices (PCATS) from weaned northern elephant seal (NES - Mirounga angustirostris) blubber were exposed to three treatments: (i) epinephrine (acute stress), (ii) cortisol, persistent organic pollutants (Aroclor 1254, BDE-47, BDE-99 and 4,4'-DDE) and variations of hydrostatic pressure mimicking NES diving conditions (chronic stress), and (iii) a combination of acute and chronic stressors. Compared to controls, acute, chro

Maternal B-vitamin status modifies the risk of congenital heart disease in offspring associated with prenatal persistent organic pollutants exposure.

BACKGROUND: No epidemiological studies have systematically evaluated the associations between prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and polychlorinated biphenyls and the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring. Moreover, the potential modifying role of maternal B-vitamin status in persistent organic pollutants (POPs)-CHD associations has not been examined. We therefore investigated the cardiotoxic effects of prenatal POPs exposure and evaluated effect modification by maternal B-vitamin levels. METHODS: A multicenter case-control study was conducted in China from 2016 to 2021

A 15-year atmospheric record of intentionally produced persistent organic pollutants in Spain: Spatial gradients, thermodynamic fractionation, and temporal trends.

This study presents a comprehensive 15-year (2009-2023) assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Spanish atmosphere to evaluate the Stockholm Convention's effectiveness. Polyurethane foam passive samplers were deployed across 23 sites to monitor legacy pesticides and industrial chemicals. Results reveal a concentration hierarchy dominated by hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which accounted for a median of 41% of the ∑POP concentrations and displayed a remote-enriched spatial pattern characteristic of global distillation. In contrast, legacy pesticides and indicator polychlorinated bip

Accumulation of persistent organic pollutants and benzotriazole UV stabilizers in the preen gland oil of Tristram's storm-petrel (Hydrobates tristrami).

Storm-petrels are among the seabird species with the highest frequencies of marine plastic ingestion, owing to their surface pick-up foraging behavior. However, there has been little assessment of plastic-related pollutants in these birds. Tristram's storm-petrels (Hydrobates tristrami), in particular, inhabit the North Pacific Central Gyre, one of the most polluted marine regions in the world. This study aims to measure concentrations of plastic-associated pollutants, i.e., benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVSs), and assess their contamination status in Tristram's storm-petrels by comparing the

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in blubber of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast, USA.

A number of studies were initiated in response to the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill to understand potential injuries to bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) that inhabit the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM) estuarine waters. As part of these studies, remote biopsy skin and blubber samples were collected from dolphins at six field sites that received varying degrees of oiling: Barataria Bay (BB), Chandeleur Sound West (CSW), Chandeleur Sound East (CSE), Mississippi Sound South (MSS), Mississippi Sound North (MSN), and St. Joseph Bay (SJ). Blubber samples from 108 male dolphins were analyz

Persistent organic pollutant concentrations in human pancreas correlate with markers of beta cell dysfunction.

Epidemiological studies consistently report associations between circulating concentrations of persistent organic pollutants and increased type 2 diabetes risk. Measures of pollutant concentrations in pancreas are limited; given the role of the endocrine pancreas in diabetes pathogenesis, this is an important gap in the literature. Additionally, no studies have correlated pollutant concentrations with direct measures of human beta cell function. We measure concentrations from 3 pollutant classes-dioxins/furans, polychlorinated biphenyls, and organochlorine pesticides-in pancreas and peripancre

Persistent Organic Pollutant Exposure and Thyroid Function among 12-Year-Old Children.

INTRODUCTION: Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) having numerous toxicological properties, including thyroid endocrine disruption. Our aim was to assess the impact of POPs on thyroid hormones among 12-year-old children, while taking puberty into consideration. METHODS: Exposure to 7 PCBs, 4 OCPs, and 6 PFASs (in µg/L), and free tri-iodothyronine (fT3, pg/mL), free thyroxine (fT4, ng/dL), and thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH, mIU/L) were assessed through blood-serum measurements

Persistent organic pollutants and metals in atmospheric depositions at an urban site in Rome, Italy: Deposition fluxes and dust-normalized concentrations.

Atmospheric deposition is one of the main routes by which persistent pollutants are transferred from the air to the soil and subsequently into the food chain, with potential impacts on human health. This study investigated atmospheric deposition of persistent pollutants at an urban site in Rome (ISS building), Italy, with particular attention to pollutant deposition fluxes (pg, ng or μg m-2 d-1) normalized to the collected sedimentable particulate matter (pg, ng or μg mg-1 SPM), and comparison between street and roof-level samples. Monthly samples were collected from 1/08/2023 to 31/08/2024 us

Association of aryl hydrocarbon receptor transactivating activity, a potential biomarker for persistent organic pollutants, with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Persistent organic pollutants(POPs) are suggested to be potential risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM). We examined the hypothesis that the aryl hydrocarbon receptor trans-activating(AhRT) activity, a potential biomarker for the presence of POPs, could be a GDM risk factor in pregnant women. A total of 390 GDM and 100 normal pregnant(non-GDM) subjects in the Korea National Diabetes Program cohort voluntarily participated. We measured AhRT activity and concentrations of ATP and reactive oxygen in the serum collected at the screening of the participants for GDM using recombinant H
