This scoping review aims to synthesize existing evidence investigating the impact of firefighters' personal protective equipment (PPE) on mobility and performance in the United States. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews, five databases were searched, and fifteen articles meeting the criteria were reviewed. Findings revealed that PPE impaired firefighters' dynamic balance (4 of 4 studies), static range of motion (all 4 studies showed various degrees of limitations), gait (3 of 3 studies), and subjective perceptions of comfort and movement ease (5 of 5 studies). In contr

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is still the gold standard of airway management, but in cases of sudden cardiac arrest in patients with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection, ETI is associated with risks for both the patient and the medical personnel. We hypothesized that the Vie Scope® is more useful for endotracheal intubation of suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cardiac arrest patients than the conventional laryngoscope with Macintosh blade when operators are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
METHODS: Study was designed as a prospective, multicenter, randomized clinical trial p

INTRODUCTION: Increasing use of ionizing radiation in hospitals exposes healthcare workers to health risks, therefore dosimetric surveillance and anti-radiation personal protective equipment are essential. However, low perception of risk has a negative impact on compliance.
OBJECTIVES: To qualitatively characterize exposure to ionizing radiation and the compliance with anti-radiation personal protective equipment and personal dosimeters by workers, at a university hospital in Portugal. To investigate the impact of attending health examinations or participating in training activities on this c

OBJECTIVES: Health care workers (HCWs) adopted several protective measures, including hand hygiene and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the frequent use of these preventive measures can lead to skin reactions. Our study aimed to determine the frequency of these reactions in Northern Morocco. In addition, we also looked at the risk factors and the consequences of these injuries on work efficiency and performance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous online survey was used to collect data, which was sent to 500 health workers in the study region.

BACKGROUND: In epidemics of highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), healthcare workers (HCW) are at much greater risk of infection than the general population, due to their contact with patients' contaminated body fluids. Contact precautions by means of personal protective equipment (PPE) can reduce the risk. It is unclear which type of PPE protects best, what is the best way to remove PPE, and how to make sure HCW use PPE as instructed.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which type of full body PPE and which method of donning or doffing

Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety medical devices is mandated for healthcare workers to reduce the risk of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) from exposure to patients' blood. Research has shown that a strong safety climate may promote increased use of PPE. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the association between safety climate and use of PPE among homecare/hospice nurses in North Carolina. To this end, a mail survey was conducted in 2006. The response rate, adjusted on the assumption

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is an essential component in any occupational health and safety program. The appropriate selection and use of PPE can help prevent or limit exposure to hazardous materials. The inappropriate selection or use of PPE can lead to unnecessary exposure or --with extremely hazardous materials--serious harm including death. In 1997, Dr. Karen E. Wetterhahn died from mercury poisoning resulting from a single exposure to dimethylmercury almost a year before. Her death raised numerous questions as to how this tragedy occurred and what could be done to protect against

BACKGROUND: The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to prevent disease transmission, but its impact on rescuer fatigue and CPR quality remains debated.
AIM: To simultaneously evaluate the effect of PPE on cognitive load and resuscitation quality.
METHODS: In a simulation-based trial at a German tertiary care hospital, 31 healthcare workers performed two 2-minute chest compression (CC) cycles on a manikin, once with PPE and once without. Compression quality (rate, depth, hand position, chest recoil) was assessed. Cognitive load wa

BACKGROUND: Wildland firefighters (WFFs) regularly face demanding physical and environmental conditions during their duties, such as high ambient temperatures, challenging terrains, heavy equipment and protective gear. These conditions can strain thermoregulatory responses, leading to increased fatigue and posing risks to their health and safety. This study examined the effectiveness of two cooling interventions during physical activity in hot environments.
METHODS: Eight active male WFFs participated, comparing the effects of wearing a cooling vest (VEST) and personal protective equipment re

Like other Canadian provinces, Quebec managed shortages of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two years later, with hindsight, what lessons can we learn from this logistics crisis? It is precisely to better understand the decisions made by the supply chain players in the province of Quebec that this paper was written. To fully understand the events, this paper first describes the Quebec healthcare system. Then it retraces the series of events and actions during the first wave, at a time when it was most challenging to procure PPE. It also specifies

The use and disposal of face masks, gloves, face shields, and other types of personal protective equipment (PPE) have increased dramatically due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Many governments enforce the use of PPE as an efficient and inexpensive way to reduce the transmission of the virus. However, this may pose a new challenge to solid waste management and exacerbate plastic pollution. The aim of the present study was to report the occurrence and distribution of COVID-19-associated PPE along the coast of the overpopulated city of Lima, Peru, and determine the influence of the activities

BACKGROUND: The pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has taken a heavy toll on human life and has upended the medical system in many countries. The disease has created a system wide worsening shortage of N95, medical masks, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) that is regularly used by healthcare personnel and emergency service providers for their protection.
AIM: Considering the number of infected patients and the stressed supplies of PPE, reuse of PPE can serve as an efficient contingency plan. Multiple studies have investigated the effect of different decontamination metho

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is defined as equipment that protects the wearer's body against health/safety risks at work. Gloves cause many dermatoses. Non-glove PPE constitutes a wide array of garments. Dermatoses resulting from these have hitherto not been documented.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence and types of non-glove PPE-related dermatoses.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We analysed incident case reports from dermatologists of non-glove PPE-related dermatoses to a UK-wide surveillance scheme (EPIDERM) between 1993 and 2013.
RESULTS: The dermatoses associated with non-glo

BACKGROUND: Doffing protocols for personal protective equipment (PPE) are critical for keeping healthcare workers (HCWs) safe during care of patients with Ebola virus disease. We assessed the relationship between errors and self-contamination during doffing.
METHODS: Eleven HCWs experienced with doffing Ebola-level PPE participated in simulations in which HCWs donned PPE marked with surrogate viruses (ɸ6 and MS2), completed a clinical task, and were assessed for contamination after doffing. Simulations were video recorded, and a failure modes and effects analysis and fault tree analyses were
