The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore experiences of naturalistic interpersonal contact with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and attitudes toward persons with IDD among Korean American adolescents and young adults. Psychometric properties of measures designed to assess common mental health problems and wellbeing in adults with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Multiple measures of mental health problems and mental wellbeing for adults with intellectual disabilities are available, but investigations into their reliability and validity are still in the early stages. The aim of this systematic review was to provide an update to previous evaluations of measures of common mental health problems and wellbeing in adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities (ID). METHODS: A systematic search was performed across three databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO and SCOPUS). The literature search was limited to the years from 2009 to 2021 and to the

What are patients with Rett syndrome interested in?

[Purpose] Rett syndrome is a severe neurodevelopmental disease; individuals typically have no verbal skills or purposeful hand movements. In clinical settings, knowledge of their interests would be helpful for therapy. Therefore, we investigated the interests of Rett syndrome patients. [Subjects and Methods] In 2016, we sent a questionnaire regarding the interests of individuals with Rett syndrome to 1,016 directors of schools for special needs education and 204 directors of rehabilitation departments (130 facilities for persons with severe motor and intellectual disabilities, 73 wards for pat

Listening to the voices of adolescents with intellectual disabilities: Exploring perception of post-school transition.

BACKGROUND: Life skills play a key role in the transition of a child with intellectual disabilities into a young adult. According to previous research, students with intellectual disabilities often lack such skills. However, most studies on this topic have been conducted on teachers or parents. Limited studies are available on adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, this study investigates how adolescents with disabilities perceive their competence in life skills post-school. METHOD: The sample consisted of 201 adolescents with disabilities (67 % with mild intellectual disabili

Frequency of HIV testing among persons with disabilities: results from the National Health Interview Survey, 2002.

We examined rates of HIV testing of persons with disabilities relative to HIV testing rates of people without disabilities in the United States. Using data from the 2002 NHIS we examined the association between self-reported disability and having ever been tested for HIV. Adults with disability were more likely than nondisabled adults to report having been tested (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.33, 1.84). However, this association differed by dis- ability. Individuals with mental health or physical disabilities were more likely to report having been tested (OR = 1.64;

Measuring public discomfort at meeting people with disabilities.

The discomfort reported by the general public at the prospect of personal contact with marginalised groups is an expression of the stigma they experience. This has been widely studied in relation to ethnic minorities and immigrants but less so for persons with disabilities. A national survey with a representative sample of over 1100 Irish adults provided an opportunity to examine reported discomfort with persons who had different impairments, including mental health conditions, with four other minority groups. Moreover, the personal and situational variables associated with expressions of disc

Understanding participation of persons with disabilities in clinical trial research in India-a retrospective analysis of inclusive language of protocols.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The under-representation of vulnerable groups in clinical trials, including persons with disabilities, could affect the applicability of trial findings to real-world public health interventions. We undertook this study to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities are excluded due to non-inclusionary language use in protocols from clinical trial research in India. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of fully published clinical trial protocols relevant to India (January 2017 to December 2024), sourced from national and international

Assessment and attempted modification of future teachers' attitudes toward handicapped children.

In a study designed to determine whether future teachers have negative sttitudes toward groups of exceptional children based upon the labels attached to these children, 13 special education majors and 32 students majoring in other fields of education were administered the Personal Attribute Inventory at the beginning and conclusion of an introductory course in special education. Results for labels, physically handicapped, educable mentally handicapped, and learning disabled, indicated that the latter two were evaluated significantly less positively than the first on both pre- and post-course t

Behavioral interventions to reduce maladaptive responding in youth with dual sensory impairment. An analysis of direct and concurrent effects.

Many persons who have multiple sensory, physical, and developmental disabilities display behaviors that interfere significantly with adaptive functioning and social acceptance. In this investigation, the efficacy of multiple component behavioral interventions for reducing maladaptive responding exhibited by two individuals with dual sensory impairment and profound mental retardation was evaluated. Results indicated that differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) approaches were not effective in either case. However, when deceleration procedures (overcorrection or brief physical restrai

Comment on Starin and Fuqua's (1987) review of research on rumination and vomiting.

Starin and Fuqua seriously misread a critical study cited in their recent review in failing to characterize it as an experimental analysis of four treatment procedures, and therefore inappropriately criticized it for several shortcomings. This misreading and a tendency to equate vomiting with and without rumination compromise their conclusions regarding treatment choice. At the present time, the data base favors selection of several aversive procedures and the nonaversive satiation procedure over others, but the number of studies on nonaversive operant treatment procedures remains remarkably l

'Telehealth for all': capitalising on the power of virtual healthcare for persons with disability in India.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual healthcare holds significant potential to advance inclusive healthcare for persons with disabilities in India, supporting the World Health Organization's goal of Universal Health Coverage. However, individuals with disabilities often face barriers to accessing virtual healthcare due to a lack of disability-inclusive infrastructure, technology, and operational support, which further limits equitable service delivery. This study aimed to investigate the experiences of persons with disabilities and their caregivers regarding virtual healthcare services in India. The focus wa
