The small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus is a serious insect vector in rice and causes substantial economic losses. Dopamine (DA) plays an important role in the multiple physiological and behavioral processes of insects, and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopa decarboxylase (DDC) are crucial enzymes in regulating DA synthesis. Although numerous studies have investigated the roles of TH and DDC in various insects, their functions in rice planthoppers remain poorly understood. Here, we cloned LsTH and LsDDC from L. striatellus. LsTH was predominantly expressed at the late stage of 3rd-5

Eucalyptus dives leaf oil, representing the piperitone chemotype, was characterized by GC/MS and evaluated for insecticidal efficacy against larval and adult stages of Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella. GC/MS analysis revealed that piperitone comprised 47.09% of the oil, followed by α-phellandrene (16.96%) and p-cymene (9.01%). The piperitone-rich E. dives oil exhibited fumigant- and contact-dependent insecticidal activity against P. interpunctella and T. castaneum, with toxicity varying by species, developmental stage, and exposure mode. Adult P. interpunctella showed high suscept

Ozone is a powerful oxidant which can be used for killing insects and microorganisms. In this study, ozone was applied in the gaseous form to control two species of pests in stored dried figs. The samples of figs (50 g each) were infested with adults of Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. and larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller and were subjected to different combinations of ozone concentrations (2, 3, and 5 ppm) and exposure times (15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 min). Changes in organoleptic properties (color, sweetness, firmness, aroma, and overall acceptability) during ozonation were studied. The results

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious and widespread viral infection of small ruminants (goats and sheep), causing heavy economic losses in many developing countries. Therefore, its progressive control and global eradication by 2030 was defined as a priority by international organizations addressing animal health. The control phase of the global strategy is based on mass vaccination of small ruminant populations in endemic regions or countries. It is estimated that a 70% post-vaccination immunity rate (PVIR) is needed in a given epidemiological unit to prevent PPR

In small-scale experiments, the predatory mites, Hypoaspis aculeifer (Canestrini) and H. miles Berlese, applied at 700 mites m(-2), and the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) applied at 3 x 10(-6) nematodes m(-2) controlled sciarids and phorids in mushroom compost and casing substrates. For both mite species, earliest application to the growing substrate following sciarid infestation reduced sciarid emergence. In contrast, later application of each biological control agent provided more effective control of phorid emergence. The behaviour of adult mites suggested that H.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an important infectious viral disease of domestic small ruminants that threatens the food security and sustainable livelihood of farmers across Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The objective of this research is to analyze the disease's spread and its impacts on direct government costs through conducting three simulations of different control strategies to reduce and quickly eradicate PPR from the United Arab Emirates in the near future. A Modified Animal Disease Spread Model was developed in this study to suit the conditions of the United Arab Emirates. The in

Heteropteran pests are economically important in field crops, and nonchemical alternatives are increasingly needed within integrated pest management (IPM). We evaluated a prototype tractor-mounted vacuum system (TMVS), a pneumatic device for the mechanical removal of heteropteran pests, in a 3-yr field study across soybean, sunflower, sorghum, alfalfa, and buckwheat. To our knowledge, this represents the first field-based evaluation of such a system under European agronomic conditions. Heteropteran abundance was assessed before and after TMVS passage using visual plant assessment and sweep-net

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae decompose several organic wastes into valuable biomass (oil, protein, chitin, and frass) for promising applications. Black Soldier Fly Oil (BSFO) is extracted using a mechanical pressing method, an affordable technique that yields about 24.56% oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of oil showed a high content of fatty acids, with 3 predominant fatty acids, oleic acid (40.14%), palmitic acid (24.53%), and lauric acid (10.00%). Black soldier fly oil nanoemulsion (BSFO-NE) exhibited a droplet size o

The dual challenges of long initial acting time of natural enemies and short control persistence of pesticides underscore the urgent need to co-apply selective pesticides and natural enemies for synergistic pest management. Herein, we developed two nano-pesticides that are nontoxic to parasitoid wasps using the safe nanocarrier hydrophilic-lipophilic diblock polymer (HLDP), and their synergistic application with parasitoid wasps effectively shortened the initial acting time and prolonged the control persistence, achieving high population suppression against common cutworms. Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a burdensome viral disease primarily affecting small ruminants, which is currently targeted for eradication by 2030 through the implementation of a Global Control and Eradication Strategy (PPR GCES). The PPR GCES, launched in 2015, has strongly encouraged countries to participate in Regional PPR Roadmaps, designated according to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) regions and epidemiological considerations, with each targeted by dedicated meetings and activities. The tropical fire ant Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius) often nests very abundantly in the earthen banks (bunds) around irrigated rice fields in the tropics. Where some farmers habitually drain fields to the mud for about 3-4 days, the ants can quickly spread up to about 20 m into the fields where they collect food, including pest prey such as the eggs and young of the apple snail Pomacea caniculata (Lamarck) and insects such as lepidopterous larvae and hoppers, notably Nilaparvata lugens (Stäl) the brown planthopper (Bph) and green leafhoppers Nephotettix spp. Even in drained fields, the activi

BACKGROUND: High-density spindle and V-trellis pear orchards face critical bottlenecks including complex canopies, poor sprayer adaptability, insufficient droplet penetration, uneven deposition, and low pesticide utilization. To overcome these issues, this study established a systematic framework including structure adaptation, parameter optimization, mechanism analysis, performance validation, and multi-objective evaluation. A dedicated air-assisted sprayer was developed using modular design, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, intelligent target detection, and high-speed flow-fiel

The grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum) is a globally important gastropod pest of arable crops. The withdrawal of synthetic chemical molluscicides due to human health and environmental concerns has prompted research into other control methods. Particular attention has focussed on behaviour-modifying chemicals (semiochemicals), most of which are derived from plants and other natural sources and include attractants, repellents and deterrents. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the use of semiochemicals in managing D. reticulatum and discusses their potential for use in integrat

The economic injury level is a well-established paradigm in pest management. The concept states that there is a pest density where the cost of damage equals the cost of the insecticide treatment, and this density is used to trigger control actions. The economic injury level thus informs decisions about the need for insecticides based on pest sampling data. However, we argue that the concept often overlooks key biological assumptions about herbivory and typically fails to incorporate the role of crop and pest phenology in optimizing pest sampling and insecticide timing. In this review, we first

Insecticides and rodenticides will always be valuable tools in the pest control professional's battle against insect and vertebrate pests. But preventing and controlling pests in today's commercial and institutional facility has less to do with simply applying pesticides than it once did. Whether you are designing a pest control plan--or deciding which outside pest control contractor to hire--keep in mind that the best plan is not necessarily the one with the lowest price tag. Choose a service plan that includes pest exclusion, thorough inspections, and sanitation as first lines of defense aga

Tea is a perennial plantation crop grown under monoculture providing favorable conditions for a variety of pests. The concept of pest control has undergone a considerable change over the past few decades. In recent years there has been a greater dependence on the use of pesticides (7.35-16.75 kgha(-1)) with little importance laid on other safe control methods for the management of tea pests. Due to this practice, the tea pests showed a higher tolerance/ resistance status due to formation of greater amount of esterases, glutathione S-transferase and acetylcholinesterase. Thus, over reliance on

INTRODUCTION: Autoinflammatory diseases are characterized by dysregulation of innate immune system leading to spontaneous sterile inflammation. One of the well-established animal models of this group of disorders is the mouse strain Pstpip2cmo . In this strain, the loss of adaptor protein PSTPIP2 leads to the autoinflammatory disease chronic multifocal osteomyelitis. It is manifested by sterile inflammation of the bones and surrounding soft tissues of the hind limbs and tail. The disease development is propelled by elevated production of IL-1β and reactive oxygen species by neutrophil granuloc

Conventional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Brassica napus often relies on the additive combination of control tactics. This review highlights the potential of ecologically optimized IPM strategies integrating habitat manipulation, behavioral conditioning, and evolutionary-informed approaches to optimize pest suppression. Habitat diversification, including intercropping, companion and banker plants, crop rotation, and landscape management, enhances natural enemy abundance and modifies pest behavior. Complementing this, natural enemy behavioral conditioning may improve host detection, fora
