Efficacy of Steinernema carpocapsae as a biological control agent for Ostrinia furnacalis pupae: Effects of distance, developmental stage, and soil depth.

Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a major pest in corn production, and its management remains a significant challenge. Current control methods, which rely heavily on synthetic chemical pesticides, are environmentally detrimental and unsustainable, necessitating the development of eco-friendly alternatives. This study investigates the potential of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae as a biological control agent for O. furnacalis pupae, focusing on its infection efficacy and the factors influencing its performance. We conducted a series

Orchid mycorrhizal fungus from the Brazilian Cerrado exhibits biocontrol activity against Meloidogyne javanica.

Waitea circinata, an orchid-associated mycorrhizal fungus, was evaluated for the first time as a biological control agent against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica. The fungus was originally isolated from the roots of Epidendrum nocturnum, a rupicolous orchid to the Brazilian Cerrado. In vitro assays demonstrated that W. circinata parasitized nematode eggs, with parasitism rates of 13-15% and characteristic emergence of septate hyphae with right-angle branching. Microscopy revealed eggshell degradation, arrested embryogenesis, and juvenile deformation. A mycelial suspension (MSF) of

NezhNPV, a new biocontrol agent for Nesodiprion zhejiangensis Zhou & Xiao (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), an emerging forest pest.

BACKGROUND: Nesodiprion zhejiangensis, a multivoltine sawfly, is widely distributed in south China and has caused serious damage to forests. Historically, N. zhejiangensis management has relied heavily on synthetic chemicals. To reduce the reliance on chemical control, we previously isolated a nucleopolyhedrovirus, NezhNPV, from deceased N. zhejiangensis larvae. A subsequent pathogenicity assay confirmed its high virulence in a laboratory setting. RESULTS: In order to comprehensively examine the hypothesis that NezhNPV is an effective new biocontrol agent for N. zhejiangensis, we carried out

Integrated effects of Curcumin application methods and Trichoderma afroharzianum on Fusarium wilt management and biochemical responses in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum).

BACKGROUND: Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum is one of the major diseases threatening hot pepper, Capsicum annuum, and results in devastating losses. Some plant extracts such as curcumin and turmeric extracts have shown in vitro efficacy against Fusarium. These extracts possess broad-spectrum antifungal activity against a number of plant pathogens such as Fusarium sp, Alternaria sp, and Botrytis sp. Curcumin is also known for its safety and low toxicity in plants. RESULT: Increasing concentrations of Curcumin progressively inhibited radial fungal growth, reaching a maximum inhibition

Acaricidal Activity of Liquid Culture Filtrates from Nematophagous Fungi Against Rhipicephalus microplus Ticks.

Rhipicephalus microplus ticks harm cattle health and productivity. Frequent use of ixodicides can result in resistant tick populations and environmental contamination, as residues enter soil. Nematophagous (NF) and entomopathogenic fungi (EF) are natural enemies of nematodes and insect pests. This study tested the in vitro lethal effects of liquid culture filtrates (LCFs) from selected NF on R. microplus. Fungi were grown in Czapek-Dox broth for 30 days at room temperature to obtain LCFs, which were tested using the immersion method. Experimental groups included: (1) Arthrobotrys musiformis, (

Argentine Metarhizium spp. isolates: Molecular identification, blastospores production, and its pathogenicity against Blattella germanica adults.

Blattella germanica is the most prevalent synanthropic pest and negatively impacts human health, as do the synthetic chemical insecticides used to control them. In contrast, Metarhizium spp. is a well known fungus that can infect insects and other arthropods, causing death to their hosts. When cultivated in liquid medium it produces blastospores. This propagule has the potential to be used as a biological control agent for cockroaches. The aim of this study was to identify eleven native Metarhizium strains from Argentina through molecular taxonomy, evaluate blastospores and biomass production

Side effects of semi-synthetic insecticide spinetoram on the whitefly parasitoid Encarsia formosa.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide risk assessment for biological control agents is essential for implementing integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Spinetoram is a naturally derived insecticide used to control a variety of agricultural sap-sucking insect pests, and Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) plays a key role in the biocontrol of greenhouse whiteflies. Despite its presumed safe ecotoxicological profile, the side effects of spinetoram on E. formosa are partially unknown, especially at sublethal doses. In the laboratory, we estimated the lethal concentrations (LC) of spinetoram

Isolation of Macrolactin A from a new Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and its aphicidal activity against Rhopalosiphum padi.

BACKGROUND: Rhopalosiphum padi is a major infection affecting cereal crops in the boundary area. However, continuous use of chemical pesticides has increased cases of drug resistance in its field population. Therefore, we aimed to verify the insecticidal properties of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens YJNbs21.10 against aphids, isolated to determine the bioactivity of its metabolite Macrolactin A against aphids for the first time. RESULTS: The results of activity tracking showed that the fermentation broth of YJNbs21.10 had the best inhibitory efficacy against R. padi, and the corrected efficiency r

First trials exploring the potential of phytoseiid mites in managing lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyidae), infestations on lychee plants.

Phytoseiid mites have been frequently found in association with the lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii, on lychee plants in Brazil, suggesting that they are promising candidates as biological control agents against this pest. Here, we investigated whether phytoseiids would suppress A. litchii infestation, i.e. formation of erinea, on lychee plants under field conditions. Four groups of A. litchii-infested plants were randomly distributed in the field, with each group receiving either Phytoseius intermedius, Amblyseius herbicolus, A. herbicolus supplemented with cattail pollen or no predator.

The biocontrol agent Lactiplantibacillus plantarum AMBP214 is dispersible to plants via bumblebees.

Plant protection products are essential for ensuring food production, but their use poses a threat to human and environmental health, and their efficacy is decreasing due to the acquisition of resistance by pathogens. Stricter regulations and consumer demand for cleaner produce are driving the search for safer and more sustainable alternatives. Microbial biocontrol agents, such as microorganisms with antifungal activity, have emerged as a promising alternative management strategy, but their commercial use has been limited by poor establishment and spread on crops. This study presents a novel s

Dimethyl sulfoxide and ascarosides improve the growth and yields of entomopathogenic nematodes in liquid cultures.

Increasing the infective juvenile (IJ) yields of entomopathogenic nematodes in monoxenic culture systems would reduce their production cost for the market. Ascarosides act as universal nematode pheromones with developmental and behavioral effects of nematodes. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is unexpectedly found to enhance the IJ yields of entomopathogenic nematodes on fortified nutrient broth plates. In this study, the influence of selected ascarosides (ascr#7, ascr#9 and ascr#11) and DMSO in three concentrations on the IJ yields of S. carpocapsae All and H. bacteriophora H06 in liquid culture fla

Efficacy and residual activity of commercially available entomopathogenic nematode strains for Mediterranean fruit fly control and their ability to infect infested fruits.

BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) show potential in controlling larvae of the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitate, but previous studies mainly concern species and strains that are not commercially available. The use of EPN for control of Mediterranean fruit fly is further hampered by the cost of using nematodes. In this study, the efficacy and residual activity of commercial strains of three EPN species, Steinernema carpοcapsae, S. feltiae and Heterοrhabditis bacteriοphοra medfly) C. capitata, in the soil substrate and inside fruits were evaluated. Influence of Metal Oxides Nanoparticles on Pathogenicity of Steinernema carpocapsae Nematodes Against Lepidopteran Galleria mellonella.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been cited as a safe and effective method for pest management. Their virulence against lepidopterans and other foliar pest has been demonstrated in the laboratory, but achieving field efficacy is challenged with environmental conditions such as desiccation and ultraviolet radiations. Nanoparticles (NPs) as UV-blocking agents have been reported to provide an alternative approach to enhance the EPNs efficacy. We screened the effect of ZnO, TiO₂ and Fe₃O₄ NPs on survival and pathogenicity of EPNs, and determined whether the nanoparticles could provide protec

Muscavirus (MdSGHV) disease dynamics in house fly populations--how is this virus transmitted and has it potential as a biological control agent?

The newly classified family Hytrosaviridae comprises several double-stranded DNA viruses that have been isolated from various dipteran species. These viruses cause characteristic salivary gland hypertrophy and suppress gonad development in their hosts. One member, Muscavirus or MdSGHV, exclusively infects adult house flies (Musca domestica) and, owing to its massive reproduction in and release from the salivary glands, is believed to be transmitted orally among feeding flies. However, results from recent experiments suggest that additional transmission routes likely are involved in the mainten

Laboratory and field evaluation of Korean entomopathogenic nematode isolates against the oriental beetle Exomala orientalis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

The oriental beetle Exomala (Anomala) orientalis (Waterhouse) is an important pest of turfgrass in Korean golf courses, and although a few chemical insecticides are registered for insect pest control, they are not very effective against scarab larvae. There is also a growing concern in Korea about the run-off of insecticides into sensitive habitats and the potential for groundwater contamination. A safe and environmentally sound alternative is needed to conventional insecticides. We therefore evaluated six Korean entomopathogenic nematode isolates: S. carpocapsae Pocheon, S. glaseri Dongrae, S

The lethal effects of Cyperus iria on Aedes aegypti.

The sedge Cyperus iria, a common weed in rice, contains large amounts of the insect hormone (10R) juvenile hormone III (JH III). Given its widespread distribution in Asia and Africa, we examined the possibility that C. iria could be used as a safe, inexpensive, and readily available mosquito larvicide. Plants of varying ages were harvested and leaves tested for lethal effects on larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The median lethal doses (LD50s) for frozen leaves from 1- and 2-month-old plants were 267 and 427 mg/100 ml of water, respectively. Leaves from 1-month-old C. iria co

Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis on egg viability and neonate survival in Spodoptera frugiperda.

The control of Spodoptera frugiperda using Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has traditionally focused on the larval stage, whereas its effects on eggs remain poorly explored. Considering the agricultural importance of this pest and the need for more sustainable management strategies, this study evaluated the insecticidal activity of the Bt aizawai HD-68 strain and the commercial product Xentari® against S. frugiperda eggs and the survival of neonate larvae hatched from treated eggs. Three concentrations of Xentari® (3.00, 4.25, and 5.00 g L-1) and one concentration of the HD-68 strain (3 × 108 spor

Ethanol tolerance of fungal strains underlies biocontrol of invasive ambrosia beetles.

Entomopathogenic fungi are widely recognized as biological control agents showing potential against insect pests that are difficult to manage with chemical pesticides. Invasive ambrosia beetles threaten a wide variety of tree crops and prove challenging to manage with chemical pesticides due to their unique life history: entrenched in the xylem of tree hosts, feeding on symbiotic fungi. Many ambrosia beetle species attack trees that are flood-stressed and producing ethanol, a key component of growth for their fungal symbiont. Ethanol causes osmotic and chaotropic stress in microbes and could p
