Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a globally significant pathogen affecting both domestic livestock and wildlife, including white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). While experimental infections have demonstrated WTD susceptibility to BVDV, natural infections and associated reproductive outcomes remain scarcely documented. Here, we report the first confirmed case of naturally occurring BVDV-1 infection associated with fetal mummification in farmed WTD in Florida. A two-year-old doe experienced a stillbirth involving two mummified fetuses, which were submitted for necropsy and labor

Pestiviruses are widespread in the world among ungulates and infect both domestic and wild animals causing severe economic losses in livestock. Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus type 1 (BVDV-1), now re-designated as Pestivirus A, causes diseases mainly in cattle, while few data are available about infection in wild ruminants and about the role of these animals in viral maintenance and spread. In order to investigate BVDV-1 infection in domestic and wild ruminants, especially at the wildlife/livestock interface, bulk tank milk from dairy cattle and sheep and spleen from red deer, roe deer and fallow

Pangolins are endangered animals and are listed in the CITES Appendix I of the Convention International Trade Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora as well as being the national first-level protected wild animal in China. Based on a few reports on pangolins infected with pestiviruses of the Flaviviridae family, Pestivirus infections in pangolins have attracted increasing attention. Pangolin pestivirus is a pathogen that may cause diseases such as acute diarrhea and acute hemorrhagic syndrome. To better understand the epidemiology and genomic characterization of pestiviruses carried by pan

The bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), a pestivirus from the family of Flaviviridae is ubiquitous and causes a range of clinical manifestations in livestock, mainly cattle. Two quinolinecarboxamide analogues were identified in a CPE-based screening effort, as selective inhibitors of the in vitro bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) replication, i.e., TO505-6180/CSFCI (average EC50 = 0.07 µM, SD = 0.02 µM, CC50 > 100 µM) and TO502-2403/CSFCII (average EC50 = 0.2 µM, SD = 0.06 µM, CC50 > 100 µM). The initial antiviral activity observed for both hits against BVDV was corroborated by measuring the

Atypical Porcine Pestivirus (APPV) is reported as the etiologic agent for type AII congenital tremors in newborn piglets. Initial PCR-based diagnostic tests to detect APPV were designed based on the limited sequence information and are not capable of detecting the majority of APPV strains. A sensitive and reliable PCR-based diagnostic test is critical for accurate detection of APPV. In this study, a quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) assay was developed for reliable detection of all currently known APPV strains. The assay design also included swine 18S rRNA gene as an internal co

The serostatus of five abortigenic agents and the association between abortion history and Coxiella burnetii seropositivity were assessed in 350 dairy cattle from Al Ain, UAE. The bovine sera were ELISA-screened for C. burnetii, Leptospira Hardjo, Neospora caninum, and Brucella abortus antibodies, plus bovine pestivirus (BVDV) antigen. The serology data were collated and the level of significance between the proportions of C. burnetii-seropositive cattle with and without abortion history assessed by the Z test of two proportions. Of the 350 cattle, 41.4%, 1.7%, 1.4%, 0.3%, and 0.0% were seropo

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an important infectious pathogen responsible for substantial economic losses in the global cattle industry. The structural protein E2 serves as a major protective antigen of BVDV and is the main target for host neutralizing immune responses. However, its antigenic structure and epitope distribution remain poorly understood. Here, five novel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the E2 protein of BVDV-1 were generated using hybridoma technology, and their reactivity patterns, biological properties, and recognized epitopes were systematically characterized. The compound 3-(imidazo[1,2-a:5,4-b']dipyridin-2-yl)aniline (CF02334) was identified as a selective inhibitor of the cytopathic effect (CPE) caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in a virus-cell-based assay. The EC50-values for inhibition of CPE, viral RNA synthesis and the production of infectious virus progeny were 13.0 ± 0.6 μM, 2.6 ± 0.9 μM and 17.8 ± 0.6 μM, respectively. CF02334 was found to be inactive in the hepatitis C subgenomic replicon system. CF02334-resistant BVDV was obtained and was found to carry the N264D mutation in the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Molec

Pestiviruses have historically been described using host-associated disease names, such as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) in cattle and Border Disease Virus (BDV) in small ruminants, and are important pathogens causing abortions, congenital anomalies, reproductive failure, and reduced productivity, resulting in substantial economic losses in livestock. This study investigated pestivirus infections in ruminant samples from Türkiye using serological and molecular methods, and RT-PCR-positive samples were further characterized by phylogenetic analysis. A total of 115 ruminant samples were co

Abortion in small ruminants significantly reduces productivity, with pestiviruses recognized as major viral contributors. Due to their broad host range, sheep can be infected not only by classical pestiviruses, such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus, but also by newly identified pestivirus species. This study aimed to molecularly detect and genetically characterize pestiviruses associated with abortion in small ruminants from eastern Türkiye and to evaluate their epidemiological distribution. Samples from 85 sheep and 14 goats were tested for pestivirus RNA using a

Several novel porcine pestiviruses that are linked to disease outbreaks in commercial pig farms were discovered during recent years. Bungowannah pestivirus (BuPV; new species Pestivirus F) causes sudden death in young pigs, but has only ever been isolated in the Australian region Bungowannah. Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV; new species Pestivirus K) on the other hand has been found in multiple countries worldwide and is potentially linked to congenital tremor, a disease that causes considerable production problems in pig farms. To assess the seroprevalences of both viruses in German commerc

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a globally significant pestivirus currently classified into three species: BVDV-1 (Pestivirus A), BVDV-2 (Pestivirus B), and BVDV-3 (HoBi-like, Pestivirus H). Here, we report the isolation and identification of a potential new BVDV genotype associated with severe outbreaks in yaks in China. Since 2024, an epidemic characterized by respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms has been spreading across Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces. From January 2024 to October 2025, we collected 260 samples from 167 affected yaks from 14 farms. Among these, 55.69% of the yaks

The Pestivirus genus comprises species that affect animal health and productivity worldwide. Members of the Suidae family are hosts for classical swine fever virus (CSFV), an important pathogen tracked by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). However, swine are also susceptible to other pestivirus species that can result in disease or compromise CSFV detection. We searched for pestivirus infection in swine sera collected from 320 backyard pig herds in southern Brazil. We used reverse-transcription PCR primers for Bungowannah virus; atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV); and a panpestivi

An atypical pestivirus ('Hobi'-like pestivirus, putative bovine viral diarrhoea 3, BVDV-3) was identified firstly in contaminated foetal calf serum batches and isolated subsequently from an outbreak of respiratory disease in a cattle herd in Italy. The isolation of the novel pestivirus from animals affected clinically posed concerns about the validity of BVDV eradication programs, considering that 'Hobi'-like pestivirus (BVDV-3) is undetected or mistyped by the molecular diagnostic tools currently employed. In this paper, the development of a nested PCR (nPCR) assay for unambiguous typing of a

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a major cause of economic losses in the global cattle industry. This study investigated the clinical involvement and genetic diversity of BVDV in clinically affected cattle from the Thrace region in Türkiye, a critical border area with the European Union. A total of 533 nasal and rectal swabs were collected from 26 farms exhibiting clinical respiratory disease or diarrhea and analyzed using real-time RT-PCR. Positive samples were further characterized by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis to determine viral genotypes and subgenotypes. BVDV RNA was detect

Bovine pestivirus A and B, previously known as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV)-1 and 2, respectively, are important pathogens of cattle worldwide, which causes significant economic losses. B-cell epitopes in BVDV glycoprotein E2 and nonstructural protein NS2/3 have been extensively identified. In this study, we screened a 12-mer phage display peptide library using commercial goat anti-BVDV serum, and identified a mimotope "LTPHKHHKHLHA" referred to as P3. With sequence alignment, a putative B-cell epitope "77ESRKKLEKALLA88" termed as P3-BVDV1/2 residing in BVDV core protein was identified.

Some viruses can suppress superinfections of their host cells by related or different virus species. The phenomenon of superinfection exclusion can be caused by inhibiting virus attachment, receptor binding and entry, by replication interference, or competition for host cell resources. Blocking attachment and entry not only prevents unproductive double infections but also stops newly produced virions from re-entering the cell post-exocytosis. In this study, we investigated the exclusion of superinfections between the different pestivirus species. Bovine and porcine cells pre-infected with non-

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) are members of the genus Pestivirus that cause disease in wild and domestic animals and are responsible for extensive economic losses of livestock and biological industry. BVDV is also a significant laboratory contaminant. Currently, no effective antiviral therapeutics are available to control their infection. Ginsenosides, as major pharmacological ingredients in the plants of ginseng, have various biological activities. In the present work, the antiviral activity of 9 ginsenosides and 3 other saponins from Araliaceae pl

The 5'-untranslated region of Pestivirus strains isolated from domestic and wild animals were analysed to determine their taxonomic status according to nucleotide changes in the secondary genomic structure using the palindromic nucleotide substitutions (PNS) method. A total of 131 isolates out of 536 Pestivirus strains evaluated, were clustered as Border disease virus (BDV) species. The BDV strains were further divided into at least 8 genotypes or subspecies. Thirty-two isolates from small ruminants suffering from clinical symptoms of Border disease were clustered into bovine viral diarrhoea v
