Consolidating the state of knowledge of surface washing agents for oil spill response decision making.

Surface washing agents (SWAs; also known as beach cleaners or shoreline cleaning agents) are oil spill cleanup agents that enhance the separation and removal of oil from substrates. Compared to conventional measures such as substrate removal or high-pressure/hot-water flushing, the fundamental advantage of using a SWA on oiled substrates is a higher degree of oil removal with reduced secondary impacts resulting from these more intensive conventional response strategies. SWAs are categorized in two groups; "lift and float" and "lift and disperse." The lift and float SWAs facilitate recovery of

The application of laser‑induced fluorescence in oil spill detection.

Over the past two decades, oil spills have been one of the most serious ecological disasters, causing massive damage to the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as the socio-economy. In view of this situation, several methods have been developed and utilized to analyze oil samples. Among these methods, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology has been widely used in oil spill detection due to its classification method, which is based on the fluorescence characteristics of chemical material in oil. This review systematically summarized the LIF technology from the perspective of excitat

Coral recruits are highly sensitive to heavy fuel oil exposure both in the presence and absence of UV light.

Oil pollution remains a prominent local hazard to coral reefs, but the sensitivity of some coral life stages to oil exposure remains unstudied. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), ubiquitous on coral reefs, may significantly increase oil toxicity towards these critical habitat-forming taxa. Here we present the first data on the sensitivity of two distinct post-settlement life stages of the model coral species Acropora millepora to a heavy fuel oil (HFO) water accommodated fraction (WAF) in the absence and presence of UVR. Assessment of lethal and sublethal endpoints indicates that both 1-

Acute and longer-term cardiovascular conditions in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: In 2010, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) led a clean-up response to the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. Human studies evaluating acute and longer-term cardiovascular conditions associated with oil spill-related exposures are sparse. Thus, we aimed to investigate prevalent and incident cardiovascular symptoms/conditions in the DHW Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort. METHODS: Self-reported oil spill exposures and cardiovascular symptoms were ascertained from post-deployment surveys (n = 4,885). For all active-duty cohort members (n = 45,193), prospective cardiovascular outcomes were clas

In situ vadose zone bioremediation.

Contamination of the vadose zone with various pollutants is a world-wide problem, and often technical or economic constraints impose remediation without excavation. In situ bioremediation in the vadose zone by bioventing has become a standard remediation technology for light spilled petroleum products. In this review, focus is given on new in situ bioremediation strategies in the vadose zone targeting a variety of other pollutants such as perchlorate, nitrate, uranium, chromium, halogenated solvents, explosives and pesticides. The techniques for biostimulation of either oxidative or reductive

[Sanitary-toxicological assessment of petroleum slimers undergone biological purification].

Pilot production and production studies using a biological method for treating and neutralizing toxic waste polluted with petroleum products at high concentrations (up to 30%) were conducted. The results have indicated that the use of oil degrading microorganisms is highly promising. Within the first vegetative period as high as 80% of petroleum products withdrew from waste and over 95% of those migrated into the aqueous medium. Purification decreased the content of mobile phases of metals to the values below the maximum allowable concentrations. The waste that is highly toxic for protozoa and

Geotechnical properties of oil-polluted soil: a review.

Soil polluted by oil and its derivatives is a critical environmental issue worldwide that jeopardizes ecological systems and causes geotechnical problems. This review paper focuses on the previous studies concerning the impacts of oil pollution on soil geotechnical properties. To this end, related academic literature on this topic was investigated and discussed. The findings of this study demonstrated that the addition of oil pollution in coarse-grained soils significantly reduces particle surface roughness. On the other hand, in fine-grained soils, it results in flocculation and secondary agg

Petroleum and hazardous chemical spills in Newark Bay, New Jersey, USA from 1982 to 1991.

Newark Bay, New Jersey, is particularly vulnerable to ecological damage from petroleum and chemical spills, as a result of the enclosed nature and shallow depth of the bay, the high frequency of shipping traffic, and the numerous chemical and petroleum transfer terminals located alongs its shores. To evaluate the potential impacts to the natural resources of this coastal estuarine ecosystem, chemical and petroleum accidents reported to the US Coast Guard (USCG) between 1982 and 1991 were compiled to determine the frequency and volume of these incidents in Newark Bay and in each of its major tr

Modelling of n-Hexadecane bioremediation from soil by slurry bioreactors using artificial neural network method.

Diesel oil is known to be one of the major petroleum products that can pollute water and soil. Soil pollution caused by petroleum hydrocarbons has substantially impacted the environment, especially in the Middle East. In this study, modeling and optimization of hexadecane removal from soil was performed using two pure cultures of Acinetobacter and Acromobacter and consortium culture of both bacterial species using artificial neural network (ANN) method. Then the best ANN structure was proposed based on mean square error (MSE) as well as correlation coefficient (R) for pure cultures of Acinetob

A new perspective for research on the mechanism and kinetic model of aggregation between coastal spilled oil and suspended sediment.

Understanding oil spill behavior in estuarine and coastal systems requires knowledge of oil-mineral aggregate (OMA) formation, as this process significantly governs the transport of floating oil. Current understanding of OMA formation remains superficial, lacking in-depth analysis of underlying micromechanisms. Moreover, existing models rely solely on mineral concentration, resulting in limited applicability. In this study, the aggregation between moderately dispersed oil and various minerals was investigated through mesoscale simulation experiments conducted in a wave tank. Physicochemical an

Enhanced phytoremediation of crude oil-contaminated soil using Cynodon dactylon with nutrient and mixed liquid suspended solids amendments.

Phytoremediation of crude oil-contaminated soil requires strategies to overcome plant stress and enhance microbial degradation. This study evaluated an integrated approach using Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) augmented with nutrients and a microbial consortium (MLSS). A 90-day pot experiment was conducted with soil contaminated with Bangistan crude oil (0.25-5% w/w). Treatments included unplanted control, planted control, and planted systems amended with NPK fertilizer and/or MLSS. The combined nutrient and MLSS amendment synergistically enhanced remediation. It achieved > 95% Total Petroleu

Convergent shifts in microbial communities: Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination suppresses matrix heterogeneity.

Accurate characterization of microbial communities in aquifers is essential for understanding groundwater ecosystem responses to petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. However, existing studies have focused primarily on groundwater, largely overlooking the coupled interactions between groundwater and aquifer sediments, which may bias aquifer-scale evaluations of microbial functional potential. In this study, contaminated groundwater and corresponding aquifer sediment samples were collected from a petroleum hydrocarbon impacted site, together with uncontaminated groundwater and sediment samples o

Phytotoxic effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on germination and growth of the native halophyte Salicornia sinus persica in oil contaminated soil.

The release of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) into the environment is primarily linked to petroleum industry activities, including drilling, exploration, storage, and related processes. The spillage of PHCs into the environment poses significant threats to ecosystems and can lead to serious risks to human health, the environment, and plants. This research aims to investigate the phytotoxic effect of petroleum sludge on the germination and growth characteristics of Salicornia sinus-persica. This study was conducted in a greenhouse using pots to examine the effects of varying concentrations of PH

Genomic features and alkane-metabolism profiles of three new Alcanivoracaceae bacteria isolates from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Marine ecosystems are increasingly exposed to petroleum pollutants and plastic waste, highlighting the importance of better understanding the microbial taxa that mediate hydrocarbon degradation. Here, we describe the genetic and metabolic toolbox of Alcanivoracaceae bacteria strains; Alcanivorax jadensis IL1, a candidate new species - Alcanivorax davidoviea IL2, and Alloalcanivorax venustensis A6, isolated from a petroleum-contaminated Eastern Mediterranean Sea marina. The three strains showed high metabolic capacities to utilize crude oil, linear and branched alkanes, but not mono- and polyar

Fate, behaviour and microbial response of diluted bitumen and conventional crude spills in a simulated warm freshwater environment.

Diluted bitumen (DB), one of the most transported unconventional crude oils in Canada's pipelines, raises public concerns due to its potential spillage into freshwater environments. This study aimed to compare the fate and behaviour of DB versus conventional crude (CC) in a simulated warm freshwater environment. An equivalent of 10 L of either DB or CC was spilled into 1200 L of North Saskatchewan River (NSR) water containing natural NSR sediment (2.4 kg) in a mesoscale spill tank and its fate and behaviour at air/water temperatures of 18 °C/24 °C were monitored for 56 days. Recommendations for advancing test protocols examining the photo-induced toxicity of petroleum and polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Photo-induced toxicity of petroleum products and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) is the enhanced toxicity caused by their interaction with ultraviolet radiation and occurs by two distinct mechanisms: photosensitization and photomodification. Laboratory approaches for designing, conducting, and reporting of photo-induced toxicity studies are reviewed and recommended to enhance the original Chemical Response to Oil Spills: Ecological Research Forum (CROSERF) protocols which did not address photo-induced toxicity. Guidance is provided on conducting photo-induced toxicity tests, including tes

The effect of temperature on hydrocarbon profiles and the microbial community composition in North Saskatchewan River water during mesoscale tank tests of diluted bitumen spills.

Despite many studies of diluted bitumen (DB) behavior during spills in saltwater, limited information is available on DB behavior in fresh water. This study examined the collective weathering processes on changes of fresh DB spilled in the North Saskatchewan River water and sediment mixture in a mesoscale spill tank under average air/water temperatures of 14 °C/15 °C and 6 °C/2 °C. Temporal changes of the hydrocarbon and microbial community compositions in the water column were assessed during the two 35-day tests under intermittent wave action. Ultraviolet avoidance by embryonic buoyancy control in three species of marine fish.

Pelagic fish embryos are thought to float in or near surface waters for the majority of their development and are presumed to have little to no control over their mobility, rendering these embryos at high risk for damages associated with surface stressors such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR). We recently challenged these long-standing paradigms by characterizing a potential mechanism of stressor avoidance in early-life stage mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) in which embryos sense external cues, such as UVR, and modify their buoyancy to reduce further exposure. It is unknown whether embryos of ot
