Artificial intelligence-assisted quality control circles led by clinical pharmacists to improve the rational use of parenteral proton pump inhibitors among hospitalised patients.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of drugs that inhibit gastric acid secretion and are commonly overused in clinical practice. We developed a quality control circle (QCC) assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) and led by clinical pharmacists to improve rational PPI use among patients in our hospital. A QCC team was established to follow QCC procedures. The root causes of inappropriate use were identified via AI-assisted brainstorming, and corresponding strategies were developed. The percentages of rational injectable PPI use before and after QCC implementation were calculated and com

Implementation of a "second victim" program in a pediatric hospital.

PURPOSE: A formal support program for pharmacy employees involved in adverse drug events, patient-related injuries, and other traumatic work experiences is described. SUMMARY: Healthcare workers are sometimes referred to as the "second victims" of patient care mishaps due to the anxiety, loss of confidence, and career uncertainty they may experience. After a survey indicating that about 30% of its staff had been involved in a second-victim event, the Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) pharmacy department implemented a peer-based support initiative (the YOU Matter program) based on an establ

Crisis management in Finnish hospital pharmacies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Although hospital pharmacies have played a central role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lack of crisis management theory-based empirical research on the topic. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap in the Finnish context and identify areas for development to improve future crisis preparedness. METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey was developed based on crisis management process models and sent to all hospital pharmacy heads (n = 21) during the second wave of the pandemic in October-November 2020. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and qualitative

The unreliability of estimated release dates in hospital drug shortage management: A case study of hospital pharmacy operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Drug shortages are prominent, persistent operational challenges that hospital pharmacies have been facing for years. During a drug shortage, hospital pharmacists must solve the problem of how best to invest resources to mitigate the effect of the drug shortage on patient health care. One piece of data they use to inform their decision-making is the estimated release date (ERD) of a drug, a lead time estimate given from the pharmaceutical manufacturer specifying when the next release of a drug (that is on shortage) will occur. Working with a hospital collaborator, we collected a novel set of ER

Music-Based Interventions in Clinical Pharmacy Practice: A Narrative Review of Mechanisms, Evidence, and a Framework for Integration.

Music-based interventions (MBIs) have emerged as a promising, nonpharmacologic approach to improving patient care across a variety of clinical settings. This narrative review examines the current evidence describing the mechanistic basis through which music engages biological pathways relevant to clinical pharmacy practice, and the clinical evidence supporting MBIs as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy across clinical outcomes. From this evidence, the review proposes a framework through which MBIs may be integrated into clinical practice that comprises: (1) patient selection, (2) MBI selection, and (
