Rapid quantification and classification of five vinca alkaloids used in cancer therapy by flow injection analysis with UV detection and chemometrics.

Vinca alkaloids represent a major class of antineoplastic agents used against cancer. They are prepared in centralized production units by pharmacy technicians. Control of the preparation is indispensable to secure their preparation and avoid any errors, which can have serious consequences for the patient because antineoplastic agents are very toxic. Analytical quality control was proven to be the most efficient control to ensure the right drug at the right dose to the patient. The study focused on vinca alkaloids: vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine, vinflunine, and vinorelbine, in the form o

Pharmacists' medicines-related interventions for people with intellectual disabilities: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have complex pharmaceutical care needs due to a high prevalence of multimorbidity, a notable degree of polypharmacy and a high risk of adverse drug reactions. Despite this, people with ID often experience significant health disparities compared to the general population. In most developed countries, increasing emphasis on deinstitutionalisation and community integration also means greater utilisation of primary health care services where general practitioners, pharmacists and carers may lack appropriate information about the pharmaceutical

A national survey of inpatient medication systems in English NHS hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Systems and processes for prescribing, supplying and administering inpatient medications can have substantial impact on medication administration errors (MAEs). However, little is known about the medication systems and processes currently used within the English National Health Service (NHS). This presents a challenge for developing NHS-wide interventions to increase medication safety. We therefore conducted a cross-sectional postal census of medication systems and processes in English NHS hospitals to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: The chief pharmacist at each of all 165 ac

Veterinary support staff knowledge and perceptions of antimicrobial drug use, resistance, and stewardship in the United States.

Antimicrobial drug use (AMU) in veterinary medicine may contribute to antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections in both animals and people. Efforts to improve AMU in companion animal medicine are underway and should include all members of the veterinary team, including veterinary support staff. Our objective was to describe knowledge and attitudes regarding AMU, AMR, and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in companion animal medicine among veterinary support staff professionals in the United States using an anonymous, online questionnaire. Additionally, we sought to explore veterinary support staf

Exploring influences on intravenous-to-oral antibiotic switching: a qualitative interview study across healthcare professions.

OBJECTIVES: Intravenous antibiotics are often continued longer than necessary leading to prolonged admission and increased infection risk. Existing research has reported barriers to IV-to-oral switch (IVOS) predominantly from a physician's perspective, leaving gaps in understanding how other healthcare professionals may influence IVOS decisions. This study aimed to explore influencers to IVOS among different healthcare professions. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians at an acute UK NHS hospital trust, selected through

The Medication Affordability, Accessibility, and Availability in Care Transitions (Med AAAction) Study: Design and methods for a pharmacy-led trial implemented in low-income populations.

BACKGROUND: Medication nonadherence disproportionately affects low-income populations, especially during care transitions, by increasing readmissions, emergency visits, and mortality. These populations face financial, transportation, and coordination barriers that traditional medication therapy management often fails to address, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. We are conducting a pragmatic randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of the patient-centered Medication Affordability, Accessibility, and Availability in Care Transitions (Med AAAction) intervention to

The Role of the Built Environment: How Decentralized Nurse Stations Shape Communication, Patient Care Processes, and Patient Outcomes.

Increasingly, health communication scholars are attending to how hospital built environments shape communication, patient care processes, and patient outcomes. This multimethod study was conducted on two floors of a newly designed urban hospital. Nine focus groups interviews were conducted with 35 health care professionals from 10 provider groups. Seven of the groups were homogeneous by profession or level: nursing (three groups), nurse managers (two groups), and one group each of nurse care technicians ("techs") and physicians. Two mixed groups were comprised of staff from pharmacy, occupatio

[Translated article] Protocol for the development and validation of a questionnaire to evaluate user-robot interaction in the compounding of hazardous drugs in a hospital setting.

INTRODUCTION: The automation of hazardous drug preparation in hospitals using robotic systems is an effective strategy to enhance safety, quality, and process efficiency. However, its implementation introduces a novel user-robot interaction that transforms professional roles, tasks, and training needs. The acceptance of this technology depends on human, technical, and organizational factors. At present, no validated tool exists to specifically assess user-robot interaction in the preparation of hazardous drugs, whether in industrial or healthcare settings. Therefore, this study aims to develop

Time to Administration, Outcome and Cost Comparison of 2 Different Strategies to Dispense Alteplase in Pediatric Intestinal Failure.

OBJECTIVE: Central venous catheter (CVC) thrombosis is a serious complication in pediatric intestinal failure (IF) patients who require long-term parenteral nutrition. Alteplase is commonly used to restore patency in catheter-related thrombosis. Dispensing practices may vary and include constitution of 2-mg ready-to-use vials by nursing staff or thawing of batched frozen syringes from previously cryopreserved larger alteplase vials, which requires pharmacy involvement. Objectives included comparing time to administration, CVC patency restoration rates, and cost between dispensing methods. MET

Medication Adherence in Comorbid Hypertension and Diabetes: An Exploratory Descriptive Qualitative Study of Healthcare Providers' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Medication adherence is a critical determinant of clinical outcomes among patients with comorbid hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Despite the availability of effective therapies, adherence remains suboptimal, particularly in low- and middle-income settings where multiple patient, treatment, and health system factors influence medication-taking behavior. Healthcare providers are uniquely positioned to identify barriers and facilitators to adherence. This study explored healthcare providers' perspectives on medication adherence among patients with comorbid hypertension an

Implementing a pharmacist-integrated collaborative model of medication treatment for opioid use disorder in primary care: study design and methodological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists remain an underutilized resource in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). Although studies have engaged pharmacists in dispensing medications for OUD (MOUD), few studies have evaluated collaborative care models in which pharmacists are an active, integrated part of a primary care team offering OUD care. METHODS: This study seeks to implement a pharmacist integrated MOUD clinical model (called PrIMO) and evaluate its feasibility, acceptability, and impact across four diverse primary care sites. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research is used as an o

Assessment of occupational exposure to nebulized isopropyl alcohol as disinfectant during aseptic compounding of parenteral cytotoxic drugs in cleanrooms.

Pharmacy technicians are exposed to volatile organic compounds, like the disinfectant isopropyl alcohol (IPA), during the process of aseptic compounding of parenteral cytotoxic drugs. The occupational exposure to nebulized IPA during aseptic compounding has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the exposure to IPA during aseptic compounding of parenteral cytotoxic drugs and to assess compliance with legal and regulatory limits. As a secondary endpoint, the difference between two disinfection methods was compared regarding the exposure to IPA. The exposure to IPA was m

Team-Based Improvements in Pediatric Massive Transfusion Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Massive transfusion protocols (MTP) reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with life-threatening hemorrhage. However, in pediatric settings, MTP activations are rare, leading to inconsistent transfusion practices and underuse of adjunct therapies. We hypothesized that implementing a multidisciplinary MTP response team at our institution would be associated with improved adherence to best practice blood product ratios during pediatric MTP. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients who underwent MTP activation at our tertiary pediatric hospital b
