Surface properties of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and the effect of their infestation on the surface properties of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) hosts.

BACKGROUND: The wettability of the target surfaces affects the wetting and deposition of pesticides on them. The properties of leaf surfaces change after infestation by Tetranychus urticae Koch. Studying the surface wettability of T. urticae and the changes in leaf wettability after infestation is important to guide the use of acaricides. RESULTS: The body surface of T. urticae is an ellipsoidal crown covered with dense cuticle striations and hairs arranged in different directions, which makes the surface of T. urticae rough and hydrophobic. The abaxial surfaces of the leaves are rougher and

Direct neuronal projection from the dorsal raphe nucleus to the pineal complex of the rat: a Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin in vivo neuronal tracing study.

By use of Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin as an anterograde in vivo tracer, a direct projection from the dorsal raphe nucleus to the pineal complex of the rat was demonstrated. The nerve fibers extended from the dorsal raphe nucleus rostrally through the mesencephalic periaqueductal grey and entered the deep pineal from both the posterior commissure and the habenular area. A dense innervation of the deep pineal and the pineal stalk was observed, but the nerve fibers were not observed to enter the superficial pineal gland. This new neural pathway might connect the visual system with the pine

Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transfer of Phaseolus vulgaris alpha-amylase inhibitor-1 gene into mungbean Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek using bar as selectable marker.

Morphologically normal and fertile transgenic plants of mungbean with two transgenes, bar and alpha-amylase inhibitor, have been developed for the first time. Cotyledonary node explants were transformed by cocultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA105 harboring a binary vector pKSB that carried bialaphos resistance (bar) gene and Phaseolus vulgaris alpha-amylase inhibitor-1 (alphaAI-1) gene. Green transformed shoots were regenerated and rooted on medium containing phosphinothricin (PPT). Preculture and wounding of the explants, presence of acetosyringone and PPT-based selection of

No Correlation of Morpho-Agronomic Traits of Phaseolus vulgaris (Fabaceae) Genotypes and Resistance to Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) and Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Resistance of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties is an important tool to control Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) and Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) worldwide. However, bioassays to characterize the resistance of a genotype can be difficult to perform. Therefore, the current study sought to correlate the morpho-agronomic traits of P. vulgaris genotypes with their resistance to A. obtectus and Z. subfasciatus to facilitate genotype characterization. Bean samples of each genotype were infested with newly emerged insect couples, and the number of adul

A direct neural projection from the intergeniculate leaflet of the lateral geniculate nucleus to the deep pineal gland of the rat, demonstrated with Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin.

The anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) was injected into different subregions of the rat lateral geniculate nucleus. After a survival for 5-10 days, the rats were fixed by perfusion with 4% paraformaldehyde, whereafter the brains were cut in a cryostat and the tracer was localized by immunohistochemistry. After deposits of PHA-L involving the intergeniculate leaflet, a high number of PHA-L-immunoreactive fibers were observed to project directly into the posterior commissure. From the posterior commissure, some nerve fibers turned dorsally and entered into the deep pi

Identification of potential inhibitory peptides of enzymes involved in the metabolic syndrome obtained by simulated gastrointestinal digestion of fermented bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seeds.

The aim of this study was to determine the conditions of bean fermentation carried out by Lactobacillus plantarum to obtain biologically active peptide fractions after in vitro digestion. The results suggest that optimum process conditions should be selected according to the specific activity of peptides. Only a fraction with a molecular mass of 3.5-7kDa obtained after fermentation at 22°C for 3h had α-amylase inhibitory activity. The optimal fermentation conditions for bean seeds to release peptide fractions with a molecular mass of 3.5-7.0kDa and the highest lipase or ACE inhibitory activity

Ozone-induced foliar damage and release of stress volatiles is highly dependent on stomatal openness and priming by low-level ozone exposure in Phaseolus vulgaris.

Acute ozone exposure triggers major emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but quantitatively, it is unclear how different ozone doses alter the start and the total amount of these emissions, and the induction rate of different stress volatiles. It is also unclear whether priming (i.e. pre-exposure to lower O3 concentrations) can modify the magnitude and kinetics of volatile emissions. We investigated photosynthetic characteristics and VOC emissions in Phaseolus vulgaris following acute ozone exposure (600 nmol mol-1 for 30 min) under illumination and in darkness and after priming wit

Content of short-chain fatty acids in the hindgut of rats fed processed bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) flours varying in distribution and content of indigestible carbohydrates.

Red kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) processed to differ in distribution and content of indigestible carbohydrates were used to study hindgut fermentability and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). Bean flours with low or high content of resistant starch (RS), mainly raw and physically-inaccessible starch, were obtained by milling the beans before or after boiling. Flours containing retrograded starch and with a high or low content of oligosaccharides were prepared by autoclaving followed by freeze-drying with or without the boiling water. Six diets were prepared from these flours yi

Kinetic and Apparent Thermodynamic Analysis of Phaseolus Vulgaris Leucoagglutinin Binding to Cell-Surface Glycans in SR Lymphoma Cells Using a Fixation-Modified Cell-ELISA.

Cell-surface glycosylation plays an important role in lectin-mediated molecular recognition and is frequently altered in malignant cells. In this study, a fixation-modified cell-ELISA was developed to enable stable immobilization of non-adherent cells and to compare the binding behavior of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) toward SR lymphoma cells and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Saturation binding and time-course assays were performed at 5, 15, 25, and 37 °C, and the resulting whole-cell ELISA data were analyzed using Langmuir, Van't Hoff, Arrhenius, and E

Kaempferol in red and pinto bean seed (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) coats inhibits iron bioavailability using an in vitro digestion/human Caco-2 cell model.

Four different colored beans (white, red, pinto, and black beans) were investigated for factors affecting iron bioavailability using an in vitro digestion/human Caco-2 cell model. Iron bioavailability from whole beans, dehulled beans, and their hulls was determined. The results show that white beans contained higher levels of bioavailable iron compared to red, pinto, and black beans. These differences in bioavailable iron were not due to bean-iron and bean-phytate concentrations. Flavonoids in the colored bean hulls were found to be contributing to the low bioavailability of iron in the non-wh

Herbivore-induced volatiles: the emission of acyclic homoterpenes from leaves of Phaseolus lunatus and Zea mays can be triggered by a beta-glucosidase and jasmonic acid.

The treatment of healthy, undamaged plants of the Lima bean Phaseolus lunatus with solutions of a beta-glucosidase from bitter almonds (at 5 U.ml-1) through the petiole results in an enhanced emission of volatiles to the environment. The compounds are identical with those emitted in response to infestation with the red spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae. Dominant products are the two acyclic homoterpenes 4,8-dimethyl-1,3E,7- dimethylnonatriene (homoterpene I) and 4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3E,7E,11-tridecatetraene (homoterpene II) which are of sesquiterpenoid and diterpenoid origin. Therefore, a

Proximate, structural, textural, sensory and microbiological properties of non-gluten extrudate using Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and a sprouted legume (Phaseolus lunatus L.).

The inclusion of legumes as functional ingredients in a gluten-free extrusion process has been gaining attention in recent times. In this study, sorghum and germinated lima bean flour (100, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50) was extruded (feed moisture - 18%, screw speed - 250 rpm, barrel temperatures 50 °C-120 °C-120 °C, die hole diameter - 3 mm) and analysed for functional, proximate, textural, structural, pasting, microbiological and sensory properties. With 100% sorghum used as control, lima beans addition significantly (p < 0.05) improved the loose (0.37-0.44 g/ml) and packed (0.63-0.7

New research highlights: Impact of chronic ingestion of white kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Beldia) on small-intestinal disaccharidase activity in Wistar rats.

The chronic ingestion of raw or undercooked kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is involved in the pathogenesis of multiple organ dysfunction; the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The objective of this study was to assess the gavage effects of a raw Beldia bean variety on the brush border disaccharidase activities in the jejunal mucosa of Wistar rats. Twenty young adult male rats were randomly assigned into 2 groups of 10 rats each: Control, rats were gavaged with 300 mg of a rodent pellet flour suspension (RPFS); Experimental, rats were orogastrically fed a dose of 300 mg B

Up-regulation of nitrogen metabolism and chlorophyll biosynthesis by hydrogen sulfide improved photosystem photochemistry and gas exchange in chromium-contaminated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is considered as plant growth promoter under heavy metal stress, though its specific effects on photosynthesis are rarely explored. This study investigates the protective effects of exogenous H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on chlorophyll metabolism and photosystem II (PSII) function in 24-day-old bean plants exposed to 10 μM chromium (Cr) stress. Sodium hydrosulfide (100 μM) reduced Cr accumulation in both roots and leaves, leading to restored plant growth. Concomitantly, H₂S mitigated Cr-induced oxidative damages by decreasing reactive oxygen species levels and fu

Symptomless endophytic fungi suppress endogenous levels of salicylic acid and interact with the jasmonate-dependent indirect defense traits of their host, lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus).

Symptomless ‘type II’ fungal endophytes colonize their plant host horizontally and exert diverse effects on its resistance phenotype. Here, we used wild Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) plants that were experimentally colonized with one of three strains of natural endophytes (Bartalinia pondoensis, Fusarium sp., or Cochliobolus lunatus) to investigate the effects of fungal colonization on the endogenous levels of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) and on two JA-dependent indirect defense traits. Colonization with Fusarium sp. enhanced JA levels in intact leaves, whereas B. pondoensis supp

The interactive effects of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) trypsin inhibitor, hemagglutinin and cyanide on some hepatic dehydrogenases, ornithine carbamoyltransferase and intestinal disaccharidases in weanling rats.

The interactive effects of lima bean trypsin inhibitor (TI), hemagglutinin (Hgg) and cyanide (CN) when fed at the same degree of activity as found in the raw lima bean (RLB) were assessed in weanling rats using hepatic glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT) and intestinal disaccharidases activities as the response criteria. Whereas RLB significantly (P less than 0.05) increased hepatic GLDH and decreased ICDH activities respectively, dietary CN, TI and Hgg whether acting individually or jointly had no significant influence on GLDH.

Relatively Low Dosages of CeO2 Nanoparticles in the Solid Medium Induce Adjustments in the Secondary Metabolism and Ionomic Balance of Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Roots and Leaves.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are known to significantly alter plant metabolism in a dose-dependent manner, with effects ranging from stimulation to toxicity. The metabolic adjustment and ionomic balance of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) roots and leaves gained from plants grown in a solid medium added with relatively low dosages (0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L) of CeO2 NPs were investigated. Ce accumulated in the roots (up to 287.91 mg/kg dry weight) and translocated to the aerial parts (up to 2.78% at the highest CeO2 dosage), and ionomic analysis showed that CeO2 NPs interfered with potassium, molybdenum, and

The role of Desmodium intortum, Brachiaria sp. and Phaseolus vulgaris in the management of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) in maize cropping systems in Africa.

BACKGROUND: The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a serious pest of maize. Farming systems such as push-pull or maize-legume intercropping have been reported to reduce FAW infestations significantly. However, the exact mechanisms involved in FAW management have not been practically elucidated. We therefore assessed larval host preference, feeding and survival rate when exposed to four host plants commonly used in push-pull and legume intercropping. We also compared adult moths' oviposition preference between maize and other grasses used as trap crops in push-pull. RES
