Weak electron-phonon coupling is insufficient to generate significant CISS in two-terminal transport.

A central open question in chiral-induced spin selectivity is whether weak electron-phonon coupling in a helical molecular junction can generate a sizable spin polarization in two-terminal transport without invoking additional strong symmetry-breaking ingredients. We address this question by implementing a self-consistent nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) calculation for a helical tight-binding model with spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interactions. The electron-phonon self-energies are evaluated self-consistently, and the transport signal is extracted using the standard magnetiz

Generalized Surface Conductivity Model for Anisotropic Phonon Polaritons in van der Waals Slabs.

Recent advancements of anisotropic phonon polaritons (PhPs) in low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials enable efficient control of long-wavelength light at nanoscale with ultrahigh confinement and low loss. The theoretical analysis based on the two-dimensional (2D) surface conductivity model has been widely exploited, for its simplicity, to understand fundamental phenomena at the surface of vdW slabs, which, however, neglects the intrinsic higher-order waveguide modes excited therein. Here, we report a generalized surface conductivity model which can allow us to include all waveguide mod

Inhomogeneous Strain-Modulated Phonon Scattering Sustains Hot Electrons for Enhanced Enzymatic Therapy.

Enzymatic therapy holds potential as a tumor therapeutic approach, yet enhancing the catalytic activity of nanozymes remains a challenge in tumor cells. Here, we designed a strain-engineered nanozymes (PWO) based on platinum (Pt) nanodots epitaxially grown on tungsten oxide (WOx) nanoribbons, which introduced inhomogeneous lattice strain. The phonon spectrums reveal the different influences on acoustic and optical branches caused by inhomogeneous strain. Enhanced acoustic phonon scattering promotes elastic electron-phonon interactions, enabling hot electrons to retain energy as confined lattic

Photon-Phonon-Electron Synergy Enables Efficient Photothermoelectric Conversion for Intelligent Fire Warning.

Photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors offer broad-spectrum response and high sensitivity, but their performance and applications are fundamentally limited by the difficulty of simultaneously controlling photon absorption, phonon propagation, and charge-carrier dynamics. Here, we report silver selenide/silver secondary phases (Ag2Se/Ag-SPs) nanocomposite films comprising vertically aligned Ag-SPs within a (00l)-oriented Ag2Se matrix, fabricated via oriented growth and confined phase separation. This customized architecture suppresses lattice thermal transport through interfacial phonon scattering

One-Dimensional Organic Lead Bromide Elastic Crystals with Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling.

Two novel one-dimensional (1D) lead halide elastic crystals, [Pb2Br4(DMA)2]n (1) (DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) and [Pb2Br4(DMF)2]n (2) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were reported. Both compounds 1 and 2 feature a neutral 1D bimetallic axis chain structure. The bending strain of compound 1 is 1.36%, higher than those of all reported 1D single-metal axis chain coordinate polymers, indicating the superior elastic properties of the 1D bimetallic axis chain polymers. Compound 1 exhibits strong red-to-near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission below 200 K, with an emission peak at 700 nm and a full

The Spin-Phonon Relaxation Mechanism of Single-Molecule Magnets in the Presence of Strong Exchange Coupling.

Magnetic relaxation in coordination compounds is largely dominated by the interaction of the spin with phonons. Although a comprehensive understanding of spin-phonon relaxation has been achieved for mononuclear complexes, only a qualitative picture is available for polynuclear compounds. Large zero-field splitting and exchange coupling values have been empirically found to strongly suppress spin relaxation and have been used as the main guideline for designing molecular compounds with long spin lifetime, also known as single-molecule magnets, but no microscopic rationale for these observations

Emission of coherent THz magnons in an antiferromagnetic insulator triggered by ultrafast spin-phonon interactions.

Antiferromagnetic materials have been proposed as new types of narrowband THz spintronic devices owing to their ultrafast spin dynamics. Manipulating coherently their spin dynamics, however, remains a key challenge that is envisioned to be accomplished by spin-orbit torques or direct optical excitations. Here, we demonstrate the combined generation of broadband THz (incoherent) magnons and narrowband (coherent) magnons at 1 THz in low damping thin films of NiO/Pt. We evidence, experimentally and through modeling, two excitation processes of spin dynamics in NiO: an off-resonant instantaneous o

Phonon self-energy and origin of anomalous neutron scattering spectra in SnTe and PbTe thermoelectrics.

The anharmonic lattice dynamics of rock-salt thermoelectric compounds SnTe and PbTe are investigated with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and first-principles calculations. The experiments show that, surprisingly, although SnTe is closer to the ferroelectric instability, phonon spectra in PbTe exhibit a more anharmonic character. This behavior is reproduced in first-principles calculations of the temperature-dependent phonon self-energy. Our simulations reveal how the nesting of phonon dispersions induces prominent features in the self-energy, which account for the measured INS spectra and

Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional piezoelectric phononic crystals.

In this paper, we present a study on the existence of Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu piezoelectric surface acoustic waves in a two-dimensional piezoelectric phononic crystal (zinc oxide, ZnO, and cadmium-sulfide, CdS) using the plane wave expansion method. In the configuration of ZnO (100)/CdS(100) phononic crystal, the calculated results show that this type of surface waves has higher acoustic wave velocities, high electromechanical coupling coefficients, and larger band gap width than those of the Rayleigh surface waves and pseudosurface waves. In addition, we find that the folded modes of the Bl

Investigation of topological nodal line phonons in rhenium-based alkali metal oxides (AReO4; A = Na, K, and Rb) using first principles methods.

Topological phonons in spinless systems have attracted considerable attention due to their symmetry-protected robustness and potential applications in phononic and quantum technologies. Here, we present a first-principles study of topological vibrational states in scheelite-type alkali-metal perrhenates AReO4 (A = Na, K, and Rb), which crystallize in the nonsymmorphic space group I41/a. All compounds are dynamically stable and exhibit host symmetry-enforced topological phonon features, including type-I nodal lines and quadratic nodal points. Notably, KReO4 exhibits an hourglass-like phonon dis

Electron-phonon interaction and lattice thermal conductivity from metals to 2D Dirac crystals: a review.

Electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling governs electrical resistivity, hot-carrier cooling, heat flow, and critically, thermal transport in solids. Recent first-principles calculations now predict e-ph-limited thermal conductivity fromd-band metals and wide-band-gap semiconductors to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac crystals without empirical parameters. In bulk metals,ab-initiolifetimes show that phonons, though secondary, still carry up to 40%of the heat once e-ph scattering is included. We next survey coupled Boltzmann frameworks, exemplified byelphbolt, that capture mutual drag and ultrafast non-equili

Flexural phonon instability defines intrinsic van der Waals elastic limits in the interlayer direction.

Frenkel's cohesive model predicts an ideal elastic strain limit of ~10% for strong solids, a bound upheld in conventional materials. We demonstrate that such consistency breaks down in van der Waals (vdW) solids, challenging established strength theories. In situ tensile tests, combined with first-principles calculations, reveal unexpected localized decohesion failure at only ~3% strain in graphite and ~2% in h-BN along the interlayer direction-well below defect-controlled limits-defining their intrinsic elastic limits. This localization phenomenon is absent in MoS2, GaSe, and 3D crystals. We

Phonon transport and thermoelectric properties of Heusler-like Li2CuSb enabled by machine-learning interatomic potentials.

Li2CuSb is a Heusler-like ternary compound that combines potentially favorable electronic transport characteristics with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity, yet its phonon transport mechanism and thermoelectric performance remain insufficiently understood. In this work, we systematically investigate the structural, phononic, and thermoelectric properties of Li2CuSb by combining first-principles calculations, machine-learning interatomic potentials, self-consistent phonon theory, and Boltzmann transport analysis. The results show that Li2CuSb crystallizes in the cubic F4̄3m structur

Mode-resolved electron-phonon fingerprints map topological protection in lithium beyond born-Oppenheimer.

We present a mode-resolved analysis of electron-phonon interactions in lithium under extreme conditions that identifies protected regions ofk-space. The Li body-centered cubic (BCC) phase exhibits topologically protected degenerate bands at the Fermi level that inhibit superconductivity by preventing gap formation via electron-phonon coupling. In contrast, the 9 R and cl16 phase lacks the relevant symmetry protection. In the 9 R phase, the strong electron-phonon interactions dynamically couple to degenerate valence and conduction bands opening an energy gap and lowering the ground-state energy

Composition- and Thickness-Dependent Electronic and Phonon Properties of Monolayer to Few-Layer MoxW1-xSe2 Alloys.

MoxW1-xSe2 alloys exhibit composition-tunable properties critical for optoelectronics. This study investigates their composition-dependent excitonic behavior using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 300 and 25 K and their phonon properties across stoichiometries and layer numbers from 1 to 10 using Raman spectroscopy. PL spectroscopy reveals nonlinear bowing of 0.106 and 0.149 eV for A and B excitons at 300 K, and of 0.097 and 0.100 eV for neutral excitons X0 and trions Ts at 25 K, with the Ts binding energy not depending on the composition. At x = 0.25, anomalous X0 and Ts blueshift and c

Room-Temperature Hole Plasmons and Plasmon-Phonon Interactions in Epitaxial p-Type Scandium Nitride.

The plasmon resonance represents collective oscillations of free electrons, enabling subwavelength light confinement and local field enhancement in conductive media. While electron-based plasmons in metals and n-type semiconductors have been widely explored, their hole-based counterparts in p-type semiconductors remain largely underexplored due to low hole densities and large effective masses that push plasmon response to the far-infrared with strong damping. Here, we present conclusive experimental evidence of low-loss, room-temperature hole plasmons in the mid-infrared regime, realized in ep

Coordinated Electronic-Transport Regulation and Multiscale Phonon Scattering in Sb-La Co-Doped GeTe.

GeTe is a promising p-type thermoelectric material for mid-to-high temperature applications because of its favorable electronic structure and excellent transport potential. However, its thermoelectric performance is still limited by excessive hole concentration and insufficient phonon scattering. Herein, rare-earth La was co-doped with Sb into GeTe via a melting-annealing-spark plasma sintering process, and the microstructure and thermoelectric transport properties of the samples were systematically evaluated. The thermoelectric characterization reveals that the co-doping strategy significantl

Full Crystallographic Imaging of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Monolayers with Phonon-Enhanced Sum-Frequency Microscopy.

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an important 2D material for van der Waals heterostructures, single photon emitters, and infrared nanophotonics. The optical characterization of mono- and few-layer samples of hBN however, remains a challenge as the material is almost invisible optically. Here, phase-resolved sum-frequency microscopy is introduced as a technique for imaging monolayers of hBN grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and visualizing their crystal orientation. Femtosecond mid-infrared (IR) and visible laser pulses are used for sum-frequency generation (SFG), which is imaged in a w

THz-Driven Coherent Phonon Fingerprints of Hidden Symmetry Breaking in 2D Layered Hybrid Perovskites.

Metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) emerged as a family of novel semiconductors with outstanding optoelectronic properties for applications in photovoltaics and light emission. Recently, they also attract interest as promising candidates for spintronics. In materials lacking inversion symmetry, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to the Rashba-Dresselhaus effect, offering a pathway for spin current control. Therefore, inversion symmetry breaking in MHPs, which are characterized by strong SOC, has crucial implications. Yet, in complex low-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs), the pr

Phononic Stiefel-Whitney Topology with Hinge Vibrational Modes in 3D Carbon Allotrope 43T57-CA.

As a fragile topological state lacking spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and possessing space-time inversion (PT) symmetry, the Stiefel-Whitney (SW) insulator has received much attention. Up until now, the identification of SW insulators has been extensively suggested for 2D phononic systems but has been rarely considered for 3D phononic systems. 3D carbon allotrope 43T57-CA has the capability to achieve nontrivial phononic SW topology, which can be distinguished by a nontrivial second SW number. Moreover, 3D 43T57-CA can host hinge vibrational modes, which are protected by PT.
