Mobility and low contrast trip hazard avoidance using augmented depth.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated a novel visual representation for current and near-term prosthetic vision. Augmented depth emphasizes ground obstacles and floor-wall boundaries in a depth-based visual representation. This is achieved by artificially increasing contrast between obstacles and the ground surface via a novel ground plane extraction algorithm specifically designed to preserve low-contrast ground-surface boundaries. APPROACH: The effectiveness of augmented depth was examined in human mobility trials compared against standard intensity-based (Intensity), depth-based (Depth) and random (Rand

Hypothesis about brilliant lights by bioluminescent photons in near death experiences.

In near death experiences (NDEs), seeing a brilliant light may arise in the recovery period following cardiac arrest, but the subjects can think that these experiences had happened during the actual period itself. Here we hypothesize a biophysical explanation about the encounter with a brilliant light in NDEs. Accordingly, meeting brilliant light in NDEs is due to the reperfusion that induces unregulated overproduction of free radicals and excited biomolecules among them in numerous parts in the visual system. Unregulated free radicals and excited species can produce a transient increase of bi

[Artificial vision for the human blind].

Since 1960 many attempts have been made to develop visual prostheses for the blind; most of the devices based on the production of phosphenes through electrical stimulation with microelectrodes at the retina, optic nerve, lateral geniculate or occipital lobe are incapable to reconstruct a coherent retinotopic map (coordinate match between the image and the visual perception of the patient); furthermore they display important restrictions at the biomaterial level that hinder their final implantation through surgical techniques which at present time offers more risks than benefits to the patient

The application of computer vision to visual prosthesis.

A visual prosthesis is an auxiliary device for patients with blinding diseases that cannot be treated with conventional surgery or drugs. It converts captured images into corresponding electrical stimulation patterns, according to which phosphenes are generated through the action of internal electrodes on the visual pathway to form visual perception. However, due to some restrictions such as the few implantable electrodes that the biological tissue can accommodate, the induced perception is far from ideal. Therefore, an important issue in visual prosthesis research is how to detect and present

Improved discrimination of visual stimuli following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at certain frequencies increases thresholds for motor-evoked potentials and phosphenes following stimulation of cortex. Consequently rTMS is often assumed to introduce a "virtual lesion" in stimulated brain regions, with correspondingly diminished behavioral performance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we investigated the effects of rTMS to visual cortex on subjects' ability to perform visual psychophysical tasks. Contrary to expectations of a visual deficit, we find that rTMS often improves the discrimination of visual feat

Temporally-Varying Stimulations for Cortical Visual Neuroprosthetics using Spiking Neural Networks.

Visual neuroprosthesis can help to restore a rudimentary form of sight in visually impaired subjects via electrical stimulation. These systems receive camera input images processed by a artificial neural network (ANN) to output stimulation patterns for driving a large set of electrodes. Previous optimization approaches for visual neuroprosthesis stimulation patterns provided a fixed stimulation amplitude for each electrode. In this work, we look at the feasibility of using a spiking neural network (SNN) instead of the ANN allowing the model to provide time-varying stimulation patterns. During

New onset migraine with aura after treatment initiation with ivabradine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine with aura is a complex neurological disorder modeled in animals by cortical spreading depression. It is less usual to find complete animal models for the disease so any opportunity to test a human effect back at the bench is welcome. FINDINGS: We report the case of a 24 year old woman who developed new onset episodic migraine with visual aura shortly after treatment initiation with the If ion channel blocker ivabradine for frequency control in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We studied whether ivabradine could alter cortical spreading depression in a suitable animal model. S

Beta-blocker migraine prophylaxis affects the excitability of the visual cortex as revealed by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The objective of this study is to assess effects of beta-blocker migraine prophylaxis on cortical excitability determined by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Phosphene and motor thresholds (PT, MT) were investigated in 29 patients with migraine, in 15 of them prior to and following preventive medication with metoprolol and in 14 patients without prophylaxis. Following prophylaxis headache frequency significantly decreased (p = 0.005) and mean PT were significantly increased (51.5 ± 7.5 vs. 63.6 ± 8.4%) compared to patients without preventive treatment (53.7 ± 5.3 vs. 52.3 ± 6.3%; p = 0

Neuro-Inflammation Modulation and Post-Traumatic Brain Injury Lesions: From Bench to Bed-Side.

Head trauma is the most common cause of disability in young adults. Known as a silent epidemic, it can cause a mosaic of symptoms, whether neurological (sensory-motor deficits), psychiatric (depressive and anxiety symptoms), or somatic (vertigo, tinnitus, phosphenes). Furthermore, cranial trauma (CT) in children presents several particularities in terms of epidemiology, mechanism, and physiopathology-notably linked to the attack of an immature organ. As in adults, head trauma in children can have lifelong repercussions and can cause social and family isolation, difficulties at school, and, lat

Ivabradine for treatment of heart failure.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is associated with a worse outcome. Heart rate (HR) is related to outcome in HFrEF. Ivabradine selectively inhibits If (funny) channels in a concentration-dependent manner reducing HR. AREAS COVERED: The effects of ivabradine in HF were reviewed. The SHIFT trial results indicated that ivabradine improves chronic HFrEF outcomes, whereas published data suggest that amiodarone, digoxin, or verapamil may not be safe or the safety is controversial in HFrEF patients. In the CONSTATHE-DHF study, ivabradine reduced HR and improved lef

Migraine-Like Visual Auras Among Traumatized Cambodians with PTSD: Fear of Ghost Attack and Other Disasters.

This article profiles visual auras among traumatized Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic. Thirty-six percent (54/150) had experienced an aura in the previous 4 weeks, almost always phosphenes (48% [26/54]) or a scintillating scotoma (74% [40/54]). Aura and PTSD were highly associated: patients with visual aura in the last month had greater PTSD severity, 3.6 (SD = 1.8) versus 1.9 (SD = 1.6), t = 10.2 (df = 85), p < 0.001, and patients with PTSD had a higher rate of visual aura in the last month, 69% (22/32) versus 13% (7/55), odds ratio 15.1 (5.1-44.9), p < 0.001. Patients often

Monocular transcorneal electrical stimulation induces ciliary muscle thickening in contralateral eye.

Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) is used as therapy for retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and was suggested for assessing retinal sensitivity by determining phosphene thresholds, subjective luminance impressions caused by retinal stimulation. Further applications concerned the accommodation process, revealing an improved accommodative amplitude in presbyopic eyes after TES treatment. The respective changes of the ciliary muscle (CM), the structure most important for near vision, during TES are yet unknown. In a pilot study, we aimed to assess whether monocular TES lea

Electric Field Modeling for Planning Individualized HD-tACS to Target DLPFC in the Aging Brain.

Tuning brain activity with non-invasive brain stimulation critically depends on optimized targeting of the brain structures of interest, especially in populations with accelerated interindividual morphological variations as they are typical in aging. Here, we explored the electric field distribution when targeting the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using High-Definition Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (HD-tACS) in both young (YA) and older adults (OA). We modeled the electric field of ten datasets (OA: n=5, 63-76 y/o, 68.4±6.5 y/o; YA: n=5, 18-39 y/o, 27.4±7.5 y/o) c

Blue magnetophosphene perception under subthreshold magnetic stimulation in a human retinal degeneration model.

INTRODUCTION: Extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF; <300 Hz) can induce visual percepts known as magnetophosphenes through weak, subthreshold electric fields in neural tissue. Although magnetophosphene perception has been characterized in healthy observers, the anatomical locus of interaction (retinal vs. cortical) remains incompletely constrained, particularly under conditions of severe retinal dysfunction. METHODS: Here, we employed a controlled single-subject perturbation framework to mechanistically dissociate candidate sites of ELF-MF interaction using systematic variation of

Case studies of the migraine aura in the blind or partially sighted.

Visual Aura symptoms are particularly intriguing when manifesting in the severely visually impaired. Presented here are eight case reports of the migraine aura experienced by those who are blind or partially sighted. The migraine aura consists of fully reversible neurological symptoms that typically precede the migraine headache by approximately 30 min. The symptoms are commonly visual and include the classic fortification spectra, seeing flashing lights, stars or phosphenes, or experiencing distortions of the visual scene. Non-visual aura symptoms can also be experienced, including pins and n
