Biomolecular photoalterations mediated by phenothiazine derivatives.

This survey focuses on recent developments in the field of the ultraviolet photochemistry and photobiology of phenothiazine derivatives. One of the major alterations introduced by this kind of photosensitized reaction is a covalent addition of the photosensitizer or one of its photoproducts onto the macromolecular target. This reaction has been observed with soluble and membrane proteins, lipids and DNA. In the latter case, the addition occurs at the level of guanine residues and leads to inhibition of DNA replication.

Visible light in photodermatology.

Until recently, visible light (VL) had been regarded to be without significant photobiologic effect on the skin. Updated research suggests that this is not the case and the measurable effect of visible light on the skin is being documented in all skin types. Recent studies have demonstrated that in dark-skinned individuals, visible light can induce more intense and longer lasting pigmentation of the skin compared to UVA1. This effect was potentiated when VL was combined with a small percentage of ultraviolet A1 radiation (UVA1). Further, the combination of VL + UVA1 was also able to induce ery

The influence of photosynthetically active radiation on the effects of ultraviolet-B radiation on Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ultraviolet-B (UVB; 280-320 nm) radiation is a small but biologically significant portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth's surface. Research interests have been fostered because UVB has been increasing in recent years due to depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ultraviolet-B that penetrates into plant tissue may damage important cellular macromolecules. Although there has been considerable research on the effects of UVB on plants, the influence of the level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 400-700 nm) on effects of UVB requires further definition as a prelude to studies of U

[Photoallergic reactions to olaquindox in swine raisers: role of growth promotors used in feed].

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of photodermatosis is generally facilitated by the typical localization of the eruption. The causal agent can usually be identified by history taking, allowing eviction and cure. It may be difficult to find the causal agent in cases with a sequential course. The occupational and/or recreational environment may provide helpful information. We present two cases of photodermatosis related to the occupational environment. CASE REPORTS: A 50-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were farm workers. both consulted for photoinduced eczema. The eczema was triggered by episodic

The other end of the rainbow: infrared and skin.

Although infrared radiation (IRR) is ubiquitous in the terrestrial milieu, its effects on human skin have until now been largely ignored. Recent studies suggest an important role for infrared A (IRA) radiation (760-1440 nm) in dermal inflammation, photoaging, and photocarcinogenesis. In this issue, Calles et al. identify and analyze the IRA-induced transcriptome in human dermal fibroblasts. Their work paves the way for new research directions in IRA photobiology and raises important clinical questions regarding photoprotection and IRR-based dermatotherapy.

Update on photodermatoses.

Interactions with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and chromophores in the skin happen on a daily basis. Photodermatoses, which are abnormal responses to UV exposure, can be classified into subgroups based on pathogenesis. This review will discuss the clinical features, pathogenesis, photobiologic evaluation, prognosis and therapies of the most common photodermatoses.

The impact of oral Polypodium leucotomos extract on ultraviolet B response: A human clinical study.

BACKGROUND: There is a rationale for adding systemic photoprotective agents to the current photoprotection regimen. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to objectively evaluate the molecular and photobiologic effects of oral administration of Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE). METHODS: In all, 22 subjects with Fitzpatrick skin phototype I to III were enrolled. On day 1, subjects were irradiated with visible light, ultraviolet (UV) A1, and UVB (using 308-nm excimer laser). Evaluation was done immediately and 24 hours after irradiation. On days 3 and 4, irradiation and evaluation process was r

The application of antioxidants in investigations and optimization of photochemotherapy.

Psoralens (furocoumarins) are photosensitizers of plant origin. They are used in combination with near-ultraviolet (320-400 nm) light for the treatment of vitiligo, psoriasis, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), alopecia areata, eczema, and other skin diseases. Photobiological effects of psoralens in humans are numerous. They photosensitize erythema, hyperpigmentation, and skin aging, affect immune system, etc. Molecular mechanisms of photochemical reactions of psoralens with substrates are also numerous. The molecular basis and the relationships between different photobiological effects of psor

Visible Light and the Skin.

Visible light (VL, 400-700 nm) was previously regarded as nonsignificant with minimal to no photobiologic effects on the skin. Recent studies have demonstrated that in dark-skinned individuals (skin phototypes IV-VI), VL can induce more intense and longer lasting pigmentation compared to ultraviolet A1 (UVA1, 340-400 nm). Additionally, long wavelength UVA1 (370-400 nm) has been shown to potentiate these effects of VL. The combination of VL and UVA1 (VL + UVA1, 370-700 nm) was also able to induce erythema in light-skinned individuals (skin phototypes I-III), which is a novel finding since the e

A flow cytometric study of actinic reticuloid.

Potential progression of actinic reticuloid to malignant lymphoma was studied by DNA flow cytometry of affected formalin-fixed skin from six patients with histological and photobiological evidence of actinic reticuloid. DNA aneuploidy was absent in all patients providing no evidence that actinic reticuloid is a premalignant condition.

Toxicity of UV filters on marine bacteria: Combined effects with damaging solar radiation.

Organic UV filters are of emerging concern due to their occurrence and persistence in coastal ecosystems. Because marine bacteria are crucial in the major biogeochemical cycles, there is an urgent need to understand to what extent these microorganisms are affected by those chemicals. This study deciphers the impact of five common sunscreen UV filters on twenty-seven marine bacteria, combining both photobiology and toxicity analysis on environmentally relevant species. Seven bacteria were sensitive to different organic UV filters at 1000 μg L-1, including octinoxate and oxybenzone. This is the

Wavelengths and temporal effects on the response of mammalian cells to UV radiation: Limitations of action spectra illustrated by genotoxicity.

All photobiological events depend on the wavelength of the incident radiation. In real-life situations and in the vast majority of laboratory experiments, exposure always involves sources with various emission spectra spreading over a wide wavelength range. Action spectra are often used to describe the efficiency of a process at different wavelengths and to predict the effects of a given light source by summation of the individual effects at each wavelength. However, a full understanding of the biological effects of complex sources requires more than considering these concomitant events at eac

The investigation of quindoxin photosensitivity.

Quindoxin (quinoxaline di-N-oxide) is a photosensitizer capable of producing photocontact dermatitis. The study of a group of seven affected subjects has provided evidence of persistent light reaction and "photoallergy", most probably to the parent substance and not to any photoproduct or contaminant. Clinical and photobiological similarities to the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome were demonstrated.
