[The use of apetite inhibitors by women: an insight based on the gender perspective].

The scope of this study was to understand the motives that lead adult women to use appetite inhibitors and to establish, from a gender perspective, how these women relate to their own bodies. It was structured around the principles of qualitative research, and the methods of data collection were semi-structured interviews and direct observation. The informants were six women who used appetite inhibitors. The results indicated that images, publicity and social networks contribute significantly to the creation of new standards of physical appearance as well as lifestyles, which establish appeara

Examining the distinctiveness of body image and self-related constructs in eating disorders using virtual reality: the role of shape concerns, physical self-worth, and global self-worth.

INTRODUCTION: In Western culture, the female body is commonly socially perceived as an object of evaluation, causing women to frequently evaluate their self-worth based on their physical appearance. Since the last decade, the use of virtual reality (VR) helped clarify the intricate interplay between broader self-related dimensions and dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors in women with eating disorders (EDs). The first objective of this study explores the role of body image attitudes (i.e., perceived physical attractiveness, body shape concerns), global self-worth, and physical self-wor

How Do Patients Perceive Success and Satisfaction After Vertebral Body Tethering and Fusion for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis? A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common spinal deformity among children. Although posterior spinal fusion (PSF) is a commonly used treatment for curves ≥ 45°, anterior vertebral body tethering (VBT) has recently gained traction as an alternative for some patients. Surgeons have established radiographic definitions of success for PSF, with similar efforts underway for VBT. However, these definitions may not align with patient perceptions of success or their satisfaction with achieved outcomes. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To enhance patient-centered care and inform subseque

Long-Term Patient-Reported Outcomes after Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Open Primary Ventral Hernia Repair.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive approaches are increasingly used for primary ventral hernia repair, but comparative patient-reported outcome evidence remains limited. We examined long-term patient-reported outcomes after robotic, laparoscopic, and open elective primary ventral hernia repair. STUDY DESIGN: This nationwide survey- and register-based study included adults (≥18 years) undergoing elective mesh repair of primary (umbilical or epigastric) ventral hernias with defect widths <10 cm. Patient-reported outcomes were assessed using the Abdominal Hernia-Q capturing the prevalence of severe

"We're stuck with what we've got": The impact of lipodystrophy on body image.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of lipodystrophy on body image and how this affects patients' daily lives. BACKGROUND: Lipodystrophy refers to a group of rare conditions characterised by generalised or partial lack of body fat and is associated with severe metabolic problems, for example, severe insulin resistance, diabetes and pancreatitis. In addition to its metabolic effect, lack of adipose tissue may have a major impact on appearance and cause distressing physical changes. While global research has focused on diagnosis and management, there is no published work investigating t

Profiles of body image concerns and their associations with disordered eating behaviors.

Although body image concerns (BIC) are recognized as a core driver in the development of disordered eating behaviors, the combined role of various types of BIC remains underexamined. This study relied on latent profile analysis to identify the main configurations of self-reported BIC (i.e., body checking and avoidance, perceived physical appearance, and fear of negative appearance evaluation) observed in a sample of 419 French-Canadian individuals (Mage = 26.59, SDage = 9.23). The role of body mass index, sex, and age on profile membership was also examined, as well as the relation between pro

Characterizing gender differences in appearance-related safety behaviors and their relationship with clinical symptoms.

Concerns with one's physical appearance is a core feature of multiple psychiatric disorders including body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders. Recent research has evaluated smartphone-based interventions for appearance targeting appearance-related safety behaviors (ARSB), maladaptive strategies that individuals use to avoid being negatively evaluated due to their appearance. These studies have largely focused on women and excluded men representing a major gap in the literature. The present study sought to examine the relevance ARSBs in two studies. In Study 1, we examined the invariance

Perceived empathy and competence across psychotherapist appearance types: a quasi-experimental repeated-measures study.

INTRODUCTION: Physical appearance, including body weight and clothing, can affect perceptions of physicians' empathy and competence, thereby shaping the quality of the patient-physician relationship. Understanding these influences is essential for teaching about implicit bias in medical education. To examine how medical students' evaluations of psychotherapists' empathy and competence are influenced by external characteristics such as body weight and clothing style. METHODS: The survey is a quasi-experimental, video-based repeated-measures design. A total of 330 second-year medical students p

Pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum patients suffer from lower quality of life and impaired body image: a control group comparison of psychological characteristics prior to surgical correction.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of anterior chest-wall deformities on disease-specific and health-related quality of life, body image, and psychiatric comorbidity prior to surgical correction. METHODS: A total of 90 patients (71 with pectus excavatum, 19 with pectus carinatum) presenting themselves for pectus repair and 82 control subjects were recruited for this study. The objective severity of the deformity was determined through the funnel-chest index by Hümmer and the Haller index. Disease-specific quality of life was measured with the Nuss Questionnaire modif

12-Month changes of muscle strength, body composition and physical activity in adults with dystrophinopathies.

PURPOSE: Muscular dystrophy (MD) is an umbrella term for muscle wasting conditions, for which longitudinal changes in function and body composition are well established in children with Duchenne (DMD), however, changes in adults with DMD and Beckers (BMD), respectively, remain poorly reported. This study aims to assess 12-month changes in lower-limb strength, muscle size, body composition and physical activity in adults with Muscular Dystrophy (MD). METHODS: Adult males with Duchenne MD (DMD; N = 15) and Beckers MD (BMD; N = 12) were assessed at baseline and 12-months for body composition (Bo

Insights into recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors: evidenced by New York Times commenters.

In September 2019, the New York Times (NYT) published the article "Fighting the Shame of Skin Picking," which discussed the cosmetic, social and emotional impacts of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). BFRBs, including excoriation disorder, trichotillomania, onychotillomania, and onychophagia, are recurring actions that damage one's physical appearance. The aim of this study is to characterize the demographic information provided and themes raised in the 166 comments posted in response to the article. The most commonly reported condition was skin picking (38.2%), followed by trichotillo

Recommendations for assessing appearance concerns related to plexiform and cutaneous neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis 1 clinical trials.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Individuals with neurofibromatosis 1 may experience changes in their appearance due to physical manifestations of the disorders and/or treatment sequelae. Appearance concerns related to these physical changes can lead to psychological distress and poorer quality of life. While many neurofibromatosis 1 clinical trials focus on assessing changes in tumor volume, evaluating patients' perspectives on corresponding changes in symptoms such as physical appearance can be key secondary outcomes. We aimed to determine whether any existing patient-reported outcome measures are appropria

Optimising Aesthetic Reconstruction of Scalp Soft Tissue by an Algorithm Based on Defect Size and Location.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp soft tissue defects are common and result from a variety of causes. Reconstructive methods should maximise cosmetic outcomes by maintaining hair-bearing tissue and aesthetic hairlines. This article outlines an algorithm based on a diverse clinical case series to optimise scalp soft tissue coverage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of scalp soft tissue reconstruction cases performed at the Singapore General Hospital between January 2004 and December 2013 was conducted. RESULTS: Forty-one patients were included in this study. The majority of defects <100 cm²

SoftAR: visually manipulating haptic softness perception in spatial augmented reality.

We present SoftAR, a novel spatial augmented reality (AR) technique based on a pseudo-haptics mechanism that visually manipulates the sense of softness perceived by a user pushing a soft physical object. Considering the limitations of projection-based approaches that change only the surface appearance of a physical object, we propose two projection visual effects, i.e., surface deformation effect (SDE) and body appearance effect (BAE), on the basis of the observations of humans pushing physical objects. The SDE visualizes a two-dimensional deformation of the object surface with a controlled so

Body dysmorphic disorder in pediatric dermatology.

Body dysmorphic disorder is an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder involving a perceived defect in physical appearance that most commonly develops in early adolescence and causes significant functional impairment and suicidality at much higher rates than in affected adults. Patients may also present with subthreshold body dysmorphic disorder or obsessive concerns over a diagnosable dermatologic condition, both of which can present similarly to body dysmorphic disorder. Pediatric dermatologists can play an important role in detecting body dysmorphic disorder and body dysmorphic disorder-like

Nonpsychiatric medical treatment of body dysmorphic disorder.

Many individuals with body dysmorphic disorder seek nonpsychiatric medical and surgical treatment to improve perceived defects in their physical appearance. However, the types of treatments sought and received, as well as the treatment outcome, have received little investigation. This study describes the frequency, types, and outcomes of treatments sought and received by 200 individuals with body dysmorphic disorder. Treatment was sought by 71.0% and received by 64.0%. Dermatological treatment was most frequently sought and received (most often, topical acne agents), followed by surgery (most
