The use of allied health therapies on competition horses in the North Island of New Zealand.

AIM: To obtain data on the use of allied health therapy within competitive equestrian sport in the North Island of New Zealand. METHODS: Data were collected during January 2010 by survey at show jumping and dressage championships in the North Island, and from racing yards in the Central Districts of New Zealand. The survey consisted of 30 open, closed and multiple-choice questions, and was conducted face-to-face, by the same interviewer. Information on the demographics of riders or trainers and horses in each discipline (show jumping, dressage, and Thoroughbred racing), the use of allied heal

Modelling speed and inter-race intervals to assess post-race recovery in racing greyhounds.

The recovery of greyhounds post-race has important welfare implications, primarily to avoid over-running and prevent greyhounds with subclinical injuries from racing. Both situations could reasonably be expected to reduce speed, which may be identified by comparing the successive race performances of individual greyhounds. The focus of this analysis was on reportedly sound greyhounds. Thus, the hypothesis was that changes in speed could be linked with the inter-race intervals, and that shorter inter-race intervals would compromise glycogen restoration and therefore affect performance in subseq

Biochemical neuroplasticity in the cerebellum after physical exercise: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuroplasticity is the central nervous system's (CNS) capacity to adapt to injuries or environmental changes. Biochemical neuroplasticity is one such adaptation that may occur in response to physical exercise (PE). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of PE on cerebellar biochemical neuroplasticity. METHODS: Following the PICO strategy, this review included in vivo studies with small rodents (Population) subjected to well-defined PE protocols (Intervention) and compared to non-exercised controls (Comparator) to assess cerebellar biochemical altera

Evaluating plasma lactate running speed derived parameters for predicting maximal lactate steady state in teaching horses.

In humans, there is an ongoing academic discussion about measuring plasma lactate concentration ([La-]) during an incremental exercise test (IET) to establish thresholds that can predict the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS). Training studies on horses have utilized the onset of [La-] (OBLA4 mM), also known as V4, the velocity at which the [La-] of 4 mM is reached. This study assesses the effectiveness of four methods for estimating the MLSS in teaching horses. Ten teaching horses underwent a single IET to determine four exercise intensity thresholds for predicting MLSS and performed several

Exercise-induced changes in myocardial glucose utilization during periods of active cardiac growth.

Exercise training can promote physiological cardiac growth, which has been suggested to involve changes in glucose metabolism to facilitate hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes. In this study, we used a dietary, in vivo isotope labeling approach to examine how exercise training influences the metabolic fate of carbon derived from dietary glucose in the heart during acute, active, and established phases of exercise-induced cardiac growth. Male and female FVB/NJ mice were subjected to treadmill running for up to 4 weeks and cardiac growth was assessed by gravimetry. Cardiac metabolic responses to exerc

Do tight nosebands have an effect on the upper airways of horses?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The public perception relating to the welfare of horses involved with equestrian sports is associated with training methods used and the presentation of horses at events. In this context, very tight nosebands, which are intended to prevent the horse from opening its mouth, also attract a lot of attention. Various studies have evaluated the impact of tight nosebands on stress parameters, whereas the effect of tight nosebands on upper airway function is unknown. Therefore, the aim of the study was to use overground endoscopy to evaluate changes in pharyngeal and laryngeal

Dynamic nasopharyngeal collapse in horses: What we know so far.

Dynamic nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC) is an obstructive upper airway disease that affects mainly the inspiratory phase of respiration in horses undergoing strenuous exercise. It occurs when the neuromuscular activity of the nasopharynx is overwhelmed by the intense negative pressures generated during exercise. This leads to collapse of at least one of the four components of the nasopharynx which is comprised of the two lateral walls, the dorsal roof and the ventral soft palate. As a result, the airway diameter and thus airflow become compromised. Even small changes in the airway diameter produ

Genetic Expression between Ageing and Exercise: Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine as a Potential "Exercise Substitute" Antiageing Therapy.

Ageing is the effect of time on biological entities. It represents a risk factor for a variety of diseases and health disorders; thus, therapeutic options are required to tackle ageing issues. Modern geriatric medicine prescribes exercise to counteract ageing effects. This work presents secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) as a potential antiageing therapy. Indeed, SPARC declines with ageing, exercise induces SPARC, and SPARC overexpression in mice mimics exercise. Thus, we hypothesize that SPARC is an exercise-induced factor that is beyond-at least part of-the antiageing effec

Metabolic footprint in young, middle-aged and elderly rats with melatonin deficit.

The pineal gland is suggested to be an essential area involved in the programming of fertility, growth, aging, and death of mammals via the released hormone melatonin. The present study aimed to ascertain the effect of melatonin deficit on several physiological and metabolic parameters, closely associated with the aging process, at certain stages of ontogenesis. Sham and rats with pinealectomy, operated at ages 3, 14, and 18-months, respectively, were tested two months later. Sham rats demonstrated an age-related decline of muscle strength, exercise endurance, motor activity, food intake, calor

Exercise rapidly alters proteomes in mice following spinal cord demyelination.

Exercise affords broad benefits for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) including less fatigue, depression, and improved cognition. In animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS), exercise has been shown to improve remyelination, decrease blood-brain barrier permeability and reduce leukocyte infiltration. Despite these benefits many PwMS refrain from engaging in physical activity. This barrier to participation in exercise may be overcome by uncovering and describing the mechanisms by which exercise promotes beneficial changes in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we show that acute bouts o

Critical Evaluation of Whole-Body Cryostimulation Protocol in Race Horses.

Cold therapy is commonly used to relieve pain and inflammation and to aid in muscle recovery after exercise in human medicine. A number of applications have also been observed in veterinary practice. In this article, a critical evaluation of equine protocol applied with a new commercial concept of equine whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) was made. With this new concept of WBC, the protocol usually utilized for relieving pain and discomfort in humans has been extended to horses. The investigations described herein focus on the reduction of horse skin temperature when applying human WBC protocols

Dynamic Change of Serum Levels of Some Branched-Chain Amino Acids and Tryptophan in Athletic Horses After Different Physical Exercises.

Physical exercise induces several adaptations involving modulation of the energetic pathways to meet the energy demand during physical exercise. The branched-chain amino acids, leucine in particular, are considered as the most relevant amino acids, especially for exercise physiology. In this study, the change of leucine, valine, and tryptophan concentration was investigated in athletic horses before and after different exercise type. A total of 40 sport horses were equally divided into 4 groups according to the exercise type: group A (jumping), group B (reining), group C (32 km ride), and grou

Exercise mitigates the effects of hyperhomocysteinemia on adverse muscle remodeling.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is known for causing inflammation and vascular remodeling, particularly through production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activation. Although its effect on the skeletal muscle is unclear, HHcy can cause skeletal muscle weakness and functional impairment by induction of inflammatory mediators and macrophage mediated injury. Exercise has been shown to reduce homocysteine levels and therefore, could serve as a promising intervention for HHcy. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether HHcy causes skeletal muscle fibro

Human-like Cmah inactivation in mice increases running endurance and decreases muscle fatigability: implications for human evolution.

Compared to other primates, humans are exceptional long-distance runners, a feature that emerged in genus Homo approximately 2 Ma and is classically attributed to anatomical and physiological adaptations such as an enlarged gluteus maximus and improved heat dissipation. However, no underlying genetic changes have currently been defined. Two to three million years ago, an exon deletion in the CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase (CMAH) gene also became fixed in our ancestral lineage. Cmah loss in mice exacerbates disease severity in multiple mouse models for muscular dystrophy, a finding only partially attri

Functional electrical stimulation of intrinsic laryngeal muscles under varying loads in exercising horses.

Bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVCP) is a life threatening condition and appears to be a good candidate for therapy using functional electrical stimulation (FES). Developing a working FES system has been technically difficult due to the inaccessible location and small size of the sole arytenoid abductor, the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. A naturally-occurring disease in horses shares many functional and etiological features with BVCP. In this study, the feasibility of FES for equine vocal fold paralysis was explored by testing arytenoid abduction evoked by electrical stimulation of t

Morphological, haemato-biochemical and endocrine changes in young Standardbreds with 'maladaptation' to early training.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The demands in the Standardbred trotters industry require young, still growing horses, to be trained well above light exercise level. During that period, the risk of occurrence of energy imbalance and maladaptation to training is high. In man, the lack of energy homeostasis is considered as the basic problem in the development of chronic fatigue. OBJECTIVE: To find objective biomarkers of early maladaptation to training in young racehorses under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-five 2-year-old Standardbreds were followed during their first 3 months
