Comparative analysis of morning and evening training on performance and well-being in elite soccer players.

The purpose of the study was to determine how training at different times of day affects soccer players' performance, mood, and physiological responses. Twenty male professional soccer players participated in the study, which involved small-sided games (SSGs) conducted in both morning and evening sessions. Players' mood states, perceived exertion, heart rate, and performance metrics were measured to assess the impact of circadian rhythms on their physical and psychological responses. Results showed significantly higher HRmean (p = 0.025) and %HRmax (p = 0.022) and significantly lower blood lac

Monitoring the Breath-Hold Training Load during an Ecological Session: A Pilot Study.

This study aimed to create a training load index to measure physiological stress during breath-hold (BH) training and examine its relationship with memory performance. Eighteen well-trained BH divers (Age: 35.8±6.6 years, BH training practice: 5.3±4.5 years) participated in this study. During a standard 1.5-hour BH training in the pool, perceived exertion, heart rate, distance, and duration were measured. The training load index was modelled on the basis of a TRIMP (TRaining IMPulse) with four different equations and was used to measure the stress induced by this BH training. A reference value

Sex-Specific Changes in Physical Performance Following Military Training: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Men and women joining the military undergo the same training, often in mixed-sex platoons. Given the inherent physiological and physical performance differences between men and women, it is reasonable to question whether sex differences exist in the adaptation to military training and, therefore, whether sex-specific training should be employed to optimise training adaptations. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature evaluating changes in the physical performance of men and women following military training. METHODS: Six database sources were searched in addition to

Dynamic contractility and efficiency impairments in stretch-shortening cycle are stretch-load-dependent after training-induced muscle damage.

To determine the acute task and stretch-load dependency of neuromuscular impairments after muscle-damaging exercises, we examined the magnitude of strength deficits in isometric and stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) contractions after a single bout of exercise. Ten trained men performed 90 unilateral isokinetic eccentric-concentric knee extensions on a dynamometer. Plasma creatine kinase activity, muscle soreness, maximal isometric torque, short-range stiffness, and peak torque in the eccentric phase of the SSC contraction at 3 stretch-loads (120, 150, and 180 J) were determined in the quadriceps

Biochemical neuroplasticity in the cerebellum after physical exercise: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuroplasticity is the central nervous system's (CNS) capacity to adapt to injuries or environmental changes. Biochemical neuroplasticity is one such adaptation that may occur in response to physical exercise (PE). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of PE on cerebellar biochemical neuroplasticity. METHODS: Following the PICO strategy, this review included in vivo studies with small rodents (Population) subjected to well-defined PE protocols (Intervention) and compared to non-exercised controls (Comparator) to assess cerebellar biochemical altera

Immunology of Physical Exercise: Is Equus caballus an Appropriate Animal Model for Human Athletes?

Domestic horses routinely participate in vigorous and various athletic activities. This enables the horse to serve as a model for studying athletic physiology and immunology in other species, including humans. For instance, as a model of physical efforts, such as endurance rides (long-distance running/aerobic exercise) and races (anaerobic exercise), the horse can be useful in evaluating post-exercise response. Currently, there has been significant interest in finding biomarkers, which characterize the advancement of training and adaptation to physical exercise in the horse. The parallels in c

Genetic Expression between Ageing and Exercise: Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine as a Potential "Exercise Substitute" Antiageing Therapy.

Ageing is the effect of time on biological entities. It represents a risk factor for a variety of diseases and health disorders; thus, therapeutic options are required to tackle ageing issues. Modern geriatric medicine prescribes exercise to counteract ageing effects. This work presents secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) as a potential antiageing therapy. Indeed, SPARC declines with ageing, exercise induces SPARC, and SPARC overexpression in mice mimics exercise. Thus, we hypothesize that SPARC is an exercise-induced factor that is beyond-at least part of-the antiageing effec

Role of Physical Therapy before and after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: White Paper Report.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients can suffer from various musculoskeletal problems resulting in long-term functional incapacity. Physical therapy (PT), as a part of the healthcare team, has been historically advocated for regaining functional capacity and improving quality of life post-HSCT. Because of the nature of this condition and the burden of post-transplant complications, this patient group requires a unique approach toward their rehabilitation that takes into account their complex musculoskeletal presentation ranging from fascia, muscle, tendons, bones, and ligame

Peripheral and central chemoreceptor control of ventilation during exercise in humans.

The stability of arterial blood gas tensions and pH during steady-state moderate exercise has suggested an important humoral element of ventilatory control in humans. However, the involvement of central and peripheral chemoreflexes in this humoral control remains controversial. This reflects, in large part, technical and interpretational limitations inherent in currently used estimators of chemoreflex "sensitivity." Evidence suggests that the central chemoreceptors (a) contribute little during moderate exercise, given the relative stability of cerebrospinal pH, (b) constrain the hyperpnea of h

Do carotid chemoreceptors inhibit the hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise?

In this paper two types of evidence are presented which question the commonly presumed role of carotid chemoreceptor stimulation as the primary mediator of the hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise. First, carotid-body denervation in ponies increases their hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise. Second, the awake dog and the goat at rest show an immediate and substantial depression of tidal volume and of ventilation when their isolated carotid chemoreceptors are made hypocapnic. Accordingly, it is proposed that during heavy exercise the carotid chemoreceptors are inhibitory to respi

The influence of air humidity on human heat stress in a hot environment.

This article aims to present the physical adaptation capabilities of a human, seen as a response to extreme hot and dry or hot and humid conditions. Adaptation capabilities are expressed as safe exposure time in two variants: at rest and during physical activity. The study shows the results of calculations of the variability over time of the core temperature and skin temperature as well as heat balance. Calculations were made according to Standard No. EN ISO 7933:2005 on the basis of assumed and actual meteorological data. The results of the calculations show that in these conditions a hot but

Animal Models of Exercise and Cardiometabolic Disease.

Cardiometabolic diseases, encompassing cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, represent a significant global health challenge, driven in part by the rising prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Exercise offers profound benefits in mitigating the progression and impact of cardiometabolic diseases by improving glucose homeostasis, body composition, and cardiovascular function. However, gaps remain in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these benefits and how to optimize exercise prescriptions for cardiometabolic disease. Animal models are indispensable tools for unrave

The Impact of Exercise Capacity on Complex Neuromuscular Adaptations: A Narrative Review Based on a Rat Model System Selectively Bred for Low and High Response to Training.

There is scientific evidence that supports the association between aerobic exercise capacity and the risk of developing complex metabolic diseases. The factors that determine aerobic capacity can be categorized into two groups: intrinsic and extrinsic components. While exercise capacity is influenced by both the intrinsic fitness levels of an organism and the extrinsic factors that emerge during training, physiological adaptations to exercise training can differ significantly among individuals. The interplay between intrinsic and acquired exercise capacities represents an obstacle to recognizi

Upper airway endoscopy in exercising horses: Findings in 164 barrel racing horses with respiratory clinical signs and/or poor performance.

Barrel racing involves sprinting through a cloverleaf pattern in under 20 s. The prevalence of upper airway obstructions (UAO) in barrel racers is unknown, thus a retrospective analysis of 164 client-owned horses referred for overground endoscopy (OGE) between 2014 and 2022 was performed. Referring complaints included respiratory noise, cough, epistaxis, behaviour (owner reported stress/anxiety, refusal to enter arena, excessive head shaking), and/or poor performance. Horses performed a standardized exercise test with low and high-speed components. Videoendoscopic recordings were systematicall

Forces and pressures on the horse's back during bareback riding.

The objectives of this study were to measure forces and pressure profiles when riding with a conventional saddle compared to bareback riding. An electronic pressure mat was used to compare contact area, mean total force and pressure variables for one rider riding seven horses at sitting trot with a conventional saddle or bareback. The use of a saddle was associated with a larger contact area and higher mean total force compared with the bareback condition. Mass normalized mean total force for bareback riding was lower than expected based on the rider's body mass, suggesting that shear forces e

Anxiety and panic: from human studies to animal research and back.

The role of learning and conditioning varies across human anxiety disorders, and distinguishing between fear and panic is important to guide investigation in panic disorder. By reminding that some psychological and psychobiological theories view panic attacks as false alarms of unconditioned biological origin, we suggest that employing endophenotypes of biological and evolutionary relevance--such as the respiratory responses to suffocative stimuli--can be fruitful for both human research and animal models of panic, and can help keeping unconditioned components of the clinical picture separate
