Systemic infection with Trichosporon cutaneum in a patient with acute leukemia: report of a case.

A case of disseminated infection with Trichosporon cutaneum, a fungus that causes white piedra, is described. The patient, a 58-year-old barber with acute leukemia, had fever, myalgias and skin lesions. He was receiving cytotoxic drug therapy and prednisone, was severely neutropenic and was being treated with broad spectrum antibiotics. Blood cultures and a biopsy of the skin lesion grew T. cutaneum. He died despite amphotericin B therapy. At autopsy, widespread infection with T. cutaneum was present. T. cutaneum is another fungus capable of causing widespread systemic disease in the immunocom

Temporal tendinitis: a modified Levandoski panoramic analysis of 21 cases.

UNLABELLED: In 1993, Levandoski published the details of a system to analyze panoramic radiographs and especially, the temporomandibular joints. Piedra expanded the work of Levandoski to analyze facial and dental asymmetries. In this brief treatise, the disorder of temporal tendinitis was explored. A modified Levandoski technique was used to compare the lengths of the coronoid and condylar processes in an attempt to demonstrate how the panoramic radiograph can be simply used in the diagnosis of temporal tendinitis in the retrospective study of 21 such cases. CONCLUSIONS: a total of 18 of the

A case of disseminated Trichosporon beigelii infection in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome after chemotherapy.

Trichosporonosis is a potentially life-threatening infection with Trichosporon beigelii, the causative agent of white piedra. The systemic infection by this fungus has been most frequently described in immunocompromised hosts with neutropenia. Here, we report the first patient with disseminated infection by T. beigelii in Korea, acquired during a period of severe neutropenia after chemo-therapy for myelodysplastic syndrome. The patient recovered from the infection after an early-intensified treatment with amphotericin B and a rapid neutrophil recovery. The disseminated infection by T. beigelii

Urinary tract infection by Trichosporon asahii.

Trichosporon asahii is a basidiomycetous yeast which causes white piedra and onychomycosis in immunocompetent hosts as well as various localized and disseminated invasive infections in immunodeficient hosts. Urinary tract infection caused by Trichosporon asahii is rare. One month after posterior urethral valve surgery a seven-month-old male child presented with fever, severe vomiting and crying on micturition for five--to six days. Yeast-like fungus was isolated in pure cultures from three consecutive urine samples. It was identified as Trichosporon asahii using standard techniques. The respon

[General review of maxillofacial mycoses].

It is interesting and useful to review the different mycoses which can affect oral and maxillofacial tissues. In this review, all mycoses which can involve these tissues are described, based on a simple classification into superficial and deep mycoses. The superficial mycoses described are the dermatophytoses, the Tineas, the piedras, but also the candidoses, which are superficial opportunistic infections. The deep mycoses are subdivided into subcutaneous, systemic, and opportunistic mycoses. Subcutaneous fungal infections are sporotrichosis, lobomycosis, rhinosporidiosis, entomophtoromycoses,

[Facultative and obligate pathogenic moulds in skin affections].

Molds are vegetable microorganisms, which differ from dermatophytes sensitive to griseofulvin, and from yeasts, which do not form aerial mycelium. Most of the molds, phytopathogenic or which live from dead organic substances, are apathogenic to humans. Only a couple of dozen species can parasitize on the skin, usually together with dermatophytes or yeasts. Onychomycoses with molds appear mostly in elderly people, and fungus affections of external auditory passage in seborrheic eczema of the ear. The hair can be infected by Piedraia hortae, resulting in hard black nodules. After the identificat

Foodborne streptococcal pharyngitis after a party.

Following a private party in Río Piedras, PR, 23 (56 percent) of those who attended developed an illness characterized by pharyngitis, myalgia, fatigue, headache, and fever. Consumption of carrucho (conch) salad was significantly associated with illness (P = 0.013, Fisher's exact test). Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (M nontypable T12, serum opacity factor positive) were isolated both from throat cultures in 11 of 47 persons who attended the party and from the implicated food. The original source of contamination of the conch salad was not identified. Because complications may still occur

The epidemiological follow-up process for suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 in migrant shelters on the northern border of Mexico from July to December 2020: Between contagion underestimation and containment.

BACKGROUND: Elements associated with an increased risk factor for the contagion of COVID-19 in shelters include the turnover and overcrowding of people, time spent in communal areas, daily supply needs, water availability, and sanitation levels. The "Report on the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Migrants and Refugees," shows that factors such as the shortage of food, supplies, water, sanitizing materials, spaces for healthy distancing, financial resources for rent and essential services, and the lack of medical or psychological care complicated providing care for migrants and applicants se

[An overview on Trichosporon asahii and its infections].

Trichosporon species cause systemic, mucosa associated and superficial infections which include white piedra. Disseminated fungal infections due to Trichosporon species have increased in the recent years. Hematologic malignancy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and organ transplantation are the main risk factors for disseminated Trichosporon infections. Two most common species that cause the disseminated Trichosporon infections are Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon mucoides. Diagnosis and treatment of Trichosporon infections are difficult. Invasive trichosporonosis caused by T.asahii has a high mort

Update on the genus Trichosporon.

Trichosporon spp. are widely distributed in nature and can occasionally belong to the human microbiota. For many years, the unique species of the genus, Trichosporon beigelli, was only known as an environmental and saprophytic fungus occasionally found as the etiological agent of white piedra. However, case reports of invasive trichosporonosis have been frequently published and the genus is currently considered the second most common agent of yeasts disseminated infections. Based on molecular analysis, the taxon T. beigelli was replaced by several species and the taxonomy of the genus was prog

Geographic clustering and seroprevalence of schistosomiasis in Puerto Rico (1995).

A systematic, island-wide survey for schistosomiasis in Puerto Rico has not been conducted for more than 40 years. In 1974, a thorough survey of Boqueron de Las Piedras, a small community, showed a prevalence of 40%. No additional information on prevalence in Puerto Rico has been obtained during the ensuing 21 years. Concern for the public health of residents and visitors prompted the formation of the Bilharzia Commission in 1994 and the systematic serosurvey reported herein. Two thousand nine hundred fifty-five plasma samples from healthy donors were obtained randomly from the Red Cross in Ma

Trichosporon and Antifungal Resistance: Current Knowledge and Gaps.

Trichosporon spp. are ubiquitous environmental and emerging opportunistic fungi that can be part of the normal microbiota of the skin, vagina, and gastrointestinal tract in humans and other animals. In a state of microbiota imbalance, both immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients are susceptible to trichosporonosis, which can present as either superficial infections, such as White Piedra, or deep-seated infections, such as fungemia. Due to intrinsic resistance or limited efficacy reported with fluconazole, polyenes, echinocandins, and flucytosine, voriconazole is currently recommen

Breast tuberculosis is a rare form of tuberculosis, in developed nations its prevalence is 0.1%. In undeveloped nations it is between 3 and 4%. Less frequently breast tuberculosis cases are presented. Some texts deals with simple mastectomy cases understood as breast cancer (6, 8, 9). There is a case. She is a 35 years old woman; she is from Piedras Clavadas, Tihuatlán. She belongs to high prevalence tuberculosis community, and she has not received BCG vaccine. Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis (mycotic cyst).

Phaeohyphomycosis designates fungal infections caused by pheoid or melanized fungi and characterized histopathologically by the presence of septate hyphae, pseudohyphae, and yeasts. Etiologic agents include Exophiala, Phoma, Bipolaris, Phialophora, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Alternaria, Exserohilum, and Phialemonium sp. The most common are Exophiala jeanselmei and Wangiella dermatitidis. The clinical presentation depends on the immune status of the host: superficial (tinea nigra and black piedra); cutaneous (scytalidiosis) and corneal; subcutaneous (mycotic cyst); and systemic phaeohyphomycos

Trichosporon beigelii: survey of isolates from clinical material.

Two hundred and eight isolates of Trichosporon beigelii were identified over the period January 1973 to July 1983. 45.7% of these were from skin, 25.0% from nail, 22.6% from tissues and fluids, 3.4% from hair and 3.4% from sputum. Tr. beigelii was isolated in association with a recognized pathogen in 23 cases, 9 with a yeast, 14 with a dermatophyte. In 38 cases, Tr. beigelii was the only organism isolated when direct microscopic examination of clinical material showed the presence of hyphae and/or yeast cells. Although Tr. beigelii could only be assigned a definite pathogenic role in 6 cases o

Structural abnormalities of the hair shaft.

Abnormalities of the hair shaft are varied and often confusing. They do require accurate recognition, which can be helpful in the diagnosis and management of a hair disorder, or in the detection of underlying disease. A reliable evaluation of hair shaft abnormality is dependent on familiarity with the vast structural variations in normal hair, the hair growth cycle, and the changes produced by weathering. These structural abnormalities can be congenital or acquired, and some are associated with hair fragility. The classification used here has the advantage of simplicity and is keyed to easy re

Paleoparasitological analysis of rodent coprolites in holocenic samples from Patagonia, Argentina.

The aim of the present study was to examine the parasite fauna present in rodent coprolites collected from Cerro Casa de Piedra (CCP7), located in Perito Moreno National Park (P.N.PM., 47 degrees 57'S and 72 degrees 05'W), Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Eight coprolites obtained from the layer XIII of CCP7, with an antiquity considered as 7,920 +/- 130 yr B.P, were examined for parasites. Each coprolite was whole processed, rehydrated, homogenized, spontaneously sedimented, and examined using light microscopy. Eggs of parasites were measured and photographed.
