Limberg flap reconstruction for the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.

Pilonidal disease is a common chronic disorder of the sacrococcygeal area affecting young people. Recent reports have advocated different surgical approaches, such as open or closed technique, but recurrence complicates all forms of treatment. We conducted this case review to evaluate the validity of Limberg flap reconstruction method in the treatment of chronic recurrent pilonidal disease. In the period between September 2003 and December 2004, 32 male patients with complicated/recurrent pilonidal disease were operated on using the Limberg flap reconstruction method. The patients' mean age wa

Effectiveness of collagenase in the treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease.

PURPOSE: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (SPSD) is a disease affecting young patients, which results in a long-term loss of productive power, and also tends to have high rates of morbidity since it has no ideal treatment. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of topical collagenase in the treatment of SPSD. METHODS: In the present study, 40 patients admitted to our department were separated into two groups. Excision and marsupialization with dressing by bacterial collagenase was performed in the first group, while the treatment was excision and marsupializ

A case of sacro-coccygeal chordoma masquerading as pilonidal sinus.

Chordoma is a rare, slow-growing, but locally aggressive malignant tumour derived from the primitive notochord. Pilonidal sinus disease, characterised by communicating granulating natal cleft tracts and abscesses, is a common condition. We report a case of a sacro-coccygeal chordoma diagnosed incidentally on surgical exploration of a case of presumed pilonidal disease.

[Pilonidal sinus in a patient with Buckley's syndrome. A case report].

Buckley's syndrome is a nosologic entity characterized by the presence from birth of extremely elevated levels of circulating immunoglobulin E and an important deficiency of polymorphonuclear chemotaxis. The consequences of such alterations are represented by the premature rising of recurrent cutaneous, pulmonary and articular infections, slowing down of growth and quite significant disturbances of the immune system. We report a case which presents all the characteristics of Buckley's syndrome: familial history for atopy; otorhinolaryngologic, gynecologic and pulmonary recurrent infections fro

[Surgical revision of the pilonidal sinus with single shot antibiosis].

For a therapy of the pilonidal sinus there are different surgical and non-surgical methods to be found in literature. In our surgical wing 140 male patients have been operated on this disease from September 1990 to July 1992. 16 cases out of these 140 were re-operations. Using a special surgical technique we applied the excision with a primary closure under single-shot antibiosis in 139 cases. By modifying this antibiosis prophylaxis we could reach a primary success healing rate of up to 96%. A retrospective study among our patients showed a recurrence rate of 5%.

Excision and grafting in treatment of recurrent pilonidal sinus disease.

Most failure and recurrences after excision and grafting occur during the first five months postoperatively. We concluded that this most likely indicated inadequate excision rather than inefficacy of the procedure. For small pilonidal sinus with minor sinus tract and shallow natal cleft, excision with primary closure would seem to be the best procedure. However, for extensive or recurrent sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease, wide excision with primary split thickness skin grafting is superior. We reviewed 58 patients who had undergone excision of extensive or recurrent pilonidal disease, with pri

Outcomes of pediatric pilonidal disease treatment: excision with off-midline flap reconstruction versus endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment.

PURPOSE: Pilonidal disease (PD) is marked by chronic inflammation and frequent recurrence which can decrease quality of life. However, debate remains regarding the optimal treatment for PD in the pediatric population. This study compares two recommended treatment approaches-excision with off-midline flap reconstruction (OMF: Bascom cleft lift flap, modified Limberg flap) and minimally invasive endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT). METHODS: Single-center retrospective evaluation of patients 1-21 years of age with PD who underwent either excision with OMF reconstruction or EPSiT between

Outcomes of Sinus Laser Therapy in Sacrococcygeal Pilonidal Sinus Disease: A Single-Center Experience.

Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (SPND) is an acquired chronic disease with no precise etiopathogenesis. The morbidity associated with the disease necessitates the implementation of new techniques, such as sinus laser therapy (SiLaT), to improve disease management. However, surgical techniques as of now are preferred as the mainstay mode of treatment. A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate and report the healing outcome of the application of SiLaT on patients with SPND at a tertiary center. All patients who underwent SiLaT for primary or recurrent pilonidal sinus from February 2

Sinus laser therapy versus sinus lay open in the management of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease.

AIM: There is no standard method for the management of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPND); however, surgery remains the gold standard treatment. Wide surgical excision of the sinus is the traditional surgical treatment of SPND, yet it is associated with extended healing time and delayed recovery. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of sinus laser therapy (SiLaT) and sinus lay open in the management of SPND. METHODS: Patients with SPND who were treated with SiLaT or lay open were retrospectively reviewed. The main outcome measures were the success of surgery in terms of complete heal

Pilonidal sinus beyond the sacrococcygeal region: A penile case report.

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is an acquired pathological illness that typically manifests in the natal cleft of the sacrococcygeal region, but it can rarely occur in other locations, including the penis. We report a 30-year-old circumcised man with a painless, slowly enlarging penile shaft mass. Excision under local anesthesia revealed a hair-containing sinus with chronic granulomatous inflammation on histology, confirming pilonidal disease. Recovery was uneventful. Although uncommon, penile pilonidal sinus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic penile lesions. Histopat

Endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) is a common surgical condition for which a multitude of surgical treatments have been described. The present review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel endoscopic procedure for the treatment of SPD. METHODS: An organized literature search was conducted. Electronic databases including PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane library were searched for articles that assessed the endoscopic treatment for SPD. The main outcome parameters were failure of the technique including persistence and recurrence of SPD, postoperative c

Outcomes of endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus is a common disease of the natal cleft, which can lead to complications including infection and abscess formation. Various operative management options are available, but the ideal technique is still debatable. More recently minimally invasive approaches have been described. Our aim was to review the current literature on endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT) and its outcomes. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted and reported in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A search

Minor vs complete excision of pilonidal sinus--early postoperative period.

Pilonidal sinus arises in the natal cleft of the sacrococcigeal region either as a cyst or as an abscess collection containing hair. It is predominantly a condition of younger people. When presenting as an abscess it usually requires surgical incision and drainage, or bursts spontaneously. In general, there are various surgical approaches to this condition, from very simple to complex ones. Each technique has its supporters and justifications. In the 3 years period, from 2009-2011, 110 treatments of the pilonidal disease were performed on our department. Midline excision was performed in 75 (6
