Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction as a preconcentration alternative to increase ETAAS sensitivity in the analysis of molybdenum in bovine meat and pasture samples.

A new procedure combining dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was proposed for the determination of molybdenum in plants and animal tissue. The optimized conditions for the microextraction procedure were: 150 μL of 0.3 mol L-1 potassium ethyl xanthate (pH 1.4) and 1000 μL of acetonitrile and 50 μL of carbon tetrachloride as dispersive and extractant solvent, respectively. A limit of detection of 0.03 μg kg-1 and a limit of quantification of 0.11 μg kg-1, as well as an enrichment factor of 200, were achieved employing this procedure. Standa

NeoUngulatesDiet: A database of ungulate diets in the Neotropics.

Ungulates play a crucial ecological role in tropical forests by influencing various ecosystem processes, including herbivory, seed dispersal and predation, and seedling recruitment. These large mammalian herbivores, including tapirs, camelids, cervids, and peccaries, have a significant impact on plant community structure, composition, and dynamics, especially in the Neotropics. Despite their ecological importance, a systematic understanding of ungulate dietary information has been lacking. The NeoUngulatesDiet database addresses this gap by compiling data from a wide range of sources, includin

Assessing vanadium and arsenic exposure of people living near a petrochemical complex with two-stage dispersion models.

The goal of this study is to demonstrate that it is possible to construct a two-stage dispersion model empirically for the purpose of estimating air pollution levels in the vicinity of petrochemical plants. We studied oil refineries and coal-fired power plants in the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Complex, an area of 2,603-ha situated on the central west coast of Taiwan. The pollutants targeted were vanadium (V) from oil refineries and arsenic (As) from coal-fired power plants. We applied a backward fitting method to determine emission rates of V and As, with 192 PM10 filters originally collected betw

Passive Ecovoltaics: Solar power plants as semi-natural ecosystems via spontaneous succession in forest landscapes.

The rapid expansion of solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities poses challenges for biodiversity conservation. While "Ecovoltaics" aims to reconcile energy production with ecological restoration, current strategies primarily rely on active management, such as targeted seeding, based largely on European agricultural contexts. This study investigated the potential of a "Passive Ecovoltaics" approach in Monsoon Asia, characterized by mosaic landscapes that include forests. Our study site was a PV facility in a Japanese forested landscape, maintained without artificial seeding for five years since beco

High outcrossing rates in a self-compatible and highly aggregated host-generalist mistletoe.

Plants have evolved various strategies to avoid inbreeding, but the mass flowering displayed by many plants predisposes them to within-plant pollen movements and self-pollination. Mistletoes often aggregate at multiple spatial scales. Their bird pollinators often visit several flowers of the same individual and of others on the same host tree. We hypothesized that hermaphroditic mistletoes have self-incompatibility mechanisms that reduce or prevent selfing. Whether their spatial distribution, affected by host specificity, host distribution, and the behaviour of seed dispersers, influences thei

Stochastic estimates of exposure and cancer risk from carbon tetrachloride released to the air from the rocky flats plant.

Carbon tetrachloride is a degreasing agent that was used at the Rocky Flats Plant (RFP) in Colorado to clean product components and equipment. The chemical is considered a volatile organic compound and a probable human carcinogen. During the time the plant operated (1953-1989), most of the carbon tetrachloride was released to the atmosphere through building exhaust ducts. A smaller amount was released to the air via evaporation from open-air burn pits and ground-surface discharge points. Airborne releases from the plant were conservatively estimated to be equivalent to the amount of carbon tet

Aphid-induced Defences in Chilli Affect Preferences of the Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

The sweetpotato whitefly (WF), Bemisia tabaci, is a major pest that damages a wide range of vegetable crops in Malaysia. WF infestation is influenced by a variety of factors, including previous infestation of the host plant by other insect pests. This study investigated the effects of previous infestation of host chilli plants by the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) on the olfactory behavioural response of B. tabaci, using free-choice bioassay with a Y-tube olfactometer. We analysed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by non-infested and M. persicae-infested chilli plants using solid-p

Modeling community asbestos exposure near a vermiculite processing facility: Impact of human activities on cumulative exposure.

Contaminated vermiculite ore from Libby, Montana was processed in northeast Minneapolis from 1936 to 1989 in a densely populated urban residential neighborhood, resulting in non-occupational exposure scenarios from plant stack and fugitive emissions as well as from activity-based scenarios associated with use of the waste rock in the surrounding community. The objective of this analysis was to estimate potential cumulative asbestos exposure for all non-occupationally exposed members of this community. Questionnaire data from a neighborhood-exposure assessment ascertained frequency of potential

CO2 drives the pine wood nematode off its insect vector.

Insects have developed special organs, spiracles and the trachea, for oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange to adapt to terrestrial life. The plant-parasitic nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, also known as pine wood nematode (PWN), is vectored by pine sawyer beetles (Monochamus spp.) and causes destructive pine wilt disease, threatening the safety and stability of pine forest ecosystems. Unlike the free-living nematode model species Caenorhabditis elegans, PWN have two distinct life stages (dispersive and propagative), each requiring a unique host relationship ranging from symbiotic/commensal to p

Invisible Threats, Relentless Hunters: Biosurveillance of Airborne Plant Pathogens.

Airborne dispersal enables plant pathogens to travel across fields, regions, and continents, fueling rapid epidemics and emerging disease threats. Biosurveillance, the systematic monitoring of airborne inoculum, offers the opportunity to detect pathogens before symptoms appear and informs timely, risk-based management. Recent advances in air sampling, molecular diagnostics, metagenomics, and imaging technologies have expanded the scale and resolution of pathogen monitoring, from single-species qPCR assays to community-level aerobiome surveys. Integration of biosurveillance data with decision-s

Preventing self-fertilization: Insights from Ziziphus species.

The fitness of self-progeny individuals is inferior to that of their outcrossed counterparts, resulting in a reduction in a plant population's ability to survive and reproduce. To prevent self-fertilization, angiosperms with hermaphrodite flowers may exploit a variety of mechanisms, including synchronous dichogamy and self-incompatibility. Synchronous dichogamy involves two flowering morphs, with strict within-morph synchronization, thereby preventing not only autogamy and geitonogamy but also intra-morph mating. Self-fertilization is also prevented by self-incompatibility, a genetic mechanism

Honeydew microbial ecology: a neglected frontier in multitrophic networks.

Honeydew, the sugary excretion produced by sap-feeding Hemiptera, is one of the most common carbohydrate resources in many plant-based food webs. Honeydew supports a wide range of organisms, including ants, pollinators, (hyper-)parasitoids wasps, predatory insects, and microbes. As a sugar-rich resource, honeydew is frequently colonized by specific microbes (i.e. bacteria and fungi), which consume its sugars and other nutritional constituents. Recent research suggests that microbes within honeydew may modify its traits. Thereby driving microbial succession and acting as important 'hidden playe

Natural Defect of a Plant Rhabdovirus Glycoprotein Gene: A Case Study of Virus-Plant Coevolution.

Seven isolates of a putative cytorhabdovirus (family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales) designated as citrus-associated rhabdovirus (CiaRV) were identified in citrus, passion fruit, and paper bush from the same geographical area in China. CiaRV, bean-associated cytorhabdovirus (Brazil), and papaya virus E (Ecuador) should be taxonomically classified in the species Papaya cytorhabdovirus. Due to natural mutations, the glycoprotein (G) and P4 genes were impaired in citrus-infecting isolates of CiaRV, resulting in an atypical rhabdovirus genome organization of 3' leader-N-P-P3-M-L-5' trailer.

Evolutionary origin of cross-laminated cell walls predates lignification in vascular plant supporting tissues.

Vertical elongation in land plants is a primary adaptive strategy driven by competitive pressures for increased height, conferring significant advantages for photosynthesis and long-distance dispersal. In these lineages, structural integrity is primarily mediated by the deposition of thick extracellular cell walls. In seed plants, these walls often exhibit a cross-laminated architecture, defined by cellulose microfibrils arranged at alternating angles, and lignin reinforcement, leveraging structural anisotropy to enhance mechanical resilience. However, the evolutionary chronology of the acquis

Genetic rescue by distant trees mitigates qualitative pollen limitation imposed by fine-scale spatial genetic structure.

Restricted seed dispersal frequently leads to fine-scale spatial genetic structure (i.e., FSGS) within plant populations. Depending on its spatial extent and the mobility of pollinators, this inflated kinship at the immediate neighbourhood can critically impoverish pollen quality. Despite the common occurrence of positive FSGS within plant populations, our knowledge regarding the role of long-distance pollination preventing reproductive failure is still limited. Using microsatellite markers, we examined the existence of positive FSGS in two low-density populations of the tree Pyrus bourgaeana.

Plant-mediated competition facilitates a phoretic association between a gall mite and a psyllid vector.

Phoretic associations between mites and insects commonly occur in patchy and ephemeral habitats. As plants provide stable habitats for herbivores, herbivorous mites are rarely dependent on other animals for phoretic dispersal. However, a phoretic gall mite, Aceria pallida, which is found on plants, seasonally attaches to a herbivorous insect, Bactericera gobica, for overwintering survival. After detachment, the gall mite shares a habitat with its vector and is likely to compete with this vector for plant resources. However, excessive competition works against the sustainability of the seasonal

Sympatric Fagaceae Segregate Rodent Scatter-Hoarding Services for Similar Seed Dispersal Effectiveness in a Subtropical Forest in China.

In forest ecosystems where seed dispersal is predominantly mediated by scatter-hoarding rodents, sympatric plants compete for these limited dispersal services. This competition can drive niche differentiation, prompting the question of how ecologically similar species achieve coexistence. To address this, we conducted a seed provisioning experiment in the Ailao Mountains, Yunnan Province, China. We released 4500 tagged seeds from three congeneric species of stone oaks (Lithocarpus hancei, Lithocarpus xylocarpus, and Lithocarpus pachyphyllus; Fagaceae) to compare their seed dispersal effectiven

In situ detection of salicylic acid binding sites in plant tissues.

The determination of hormone-binding sites in plants is essential in understanding the mechanisms behind hormone function. Salicylic acid (SA) is an important plant hormone that regulates responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In order to label SA-binding sites in plant tissues, a quantum dots (QDs) probe functionalized with a SA moiety was successfully synthesized by coupling CdSe QDs capped with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) to 4-amino-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (PAS), using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyllaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) as the coupling agent. The probe was then characterized by dynami

Templated mineralization by charge-modified cowpea mosaic virus.

Templated mineralization of virus particles provides routes to narrowly dispersed nanoparticles that are not readily prepared by other means. The templated mineralization of metal or metal oxide on the external surface of wild-type cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), a plant virus, is facilitated by increasing the external surface negative charge. This is achieved by the chemical modification of surface lysine groups by succinic anhydride. Hence, for example, treatment of charge-modified CPMV succinamate with a 1:2 mixture of iron(II) and iron(III) salts, followed by raising the pH to 10.2, led to the

Love Me Not Meter: A Sensor Device for Detecting Petal Detachment Forces in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Abscission is the developmentally controlled loss of plant organs, providing diverse functions such as shedding senescent or diseased leaves, dispersing seeds, or dropping ripened fruit. This process is defined by the hydrolytic breakdown of the middle lamella in the abscission zone, allowing for organ detachment. While the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana does not undergo leaf abscission, it does have a predictable progression of floral organ abscission. To study abscission zone physical integrity in Arabidopsis, a breakstrength meter for Arabidopsis was developed to reliably measure the peta
