Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA-I) is a plant lectin which binds specifically to alpha-L-fucose moieties on the surface glycoproteins of human endothelial cells. We have compared the lymphocyte in vitro proliferative response induced by muscle extract, phytohaemagglutinin, and pokeweed mitogen in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and normal subjects. A total of 309 Helicobacter pylori isolates from 18 different countries were analyzed with a previously developed lectin typing system. Hantaan virus (HTNV) is the etiological pathogen of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in East Asia. There are currently no effective therapeutics approved for HTNV and other hantavirus infections. BACKGROUND: The spider-venom peptide ω-hexatoxin-Hv1a (Hv1a) targets insect voltage-gated calcium channels, acting directly at sites within the central nervous system. Erythrocytes of a patient with hereditary erythroblastic multinuclearity with a positive acidified serum test (HEMPAS) were tested with many seed extracts and various other reagents. Serological evidence of membrane abnormality was confirmed. Various anti-H reagents reacted relatively poorly with HEMPAS cells. HEMPAS cells have both enhanced i and depressed H antigens. Soybean agglutin (SBA) is a plant lectin that has been used to fractionate bone marrow cells. It binds bone marrow mononuclear cells, including mature myeloid, erythroid, and lymphoid cells, but has very low binding affinity and no toxic effect to the human hematopoietic cells. The effect of soaking, autoclaving and toasting methods on the proximate and mineral composition and anti-nutrients of lima (butter) bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) was investigated.
