Egyptian soils are generally characterized by slightly alkaline to alkaline pH values (7.5-8.7) which are mainly due to its dry environment. In arid and semi-arid regions, salts are less concentrated and sodium dominates in carbonate and bicarbonate forms, which enhance the formation of alkaline soils. Alkaline soils have fertility problems due to poor physical properties which adversely affect the growth and the yield of crops. Therefore, this study was devoted to investigating the synergistic interaction of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for improving growth of faba bean grown in

Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is a devastating soilborne disease often referred to as plant cancer. It threatens hundreds of species of plants and causes losses in yield and a deterioration in the quality of infected plants. Delay of Germination 1 (DOG1) plays vital roles in plant growth, development, and abiotic and biotic stress responses. However, the functions of DOG1 in biotic stress remain unexplored in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). In this study, we systematically identified and characterized the AhDOG1 gene family in peanut using bioinformatics approaches

In the Anthropocene era, climate change is increasingly subjecting the crops to overlapping abiotic stressors such as drought, elevated temperatures, and air pollution, thereby disrupting their physiological integrity and functional performance. This review synthesises current knowledge on responses of N2-fixing plants to such stressors, focusing on core physiological processes and symbiotic nitrogen fixation via nodulation. The intricate interdependence between these traits is explored through the lens of altered source-sink relationships, which are highly sensitive to multifactorial environm

Both plant MYB transcription factors and plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) regulate biotic stress responses and crop productivity. However, their potential antagonistic cross-talk or synergistic priming effects remain unclear. The potential function of VlMYBA2 in transgenic mung bean was investigated through in silico analysis to assess the interaction potential of both mung bean VrMYB90 and VlMYBA2 with bHLH proteins involved in transcriptional complexes. A pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using a completely randomized design to evaluate the effect of PGPB, Bacill

Phytohormones play an essential role in enhancing plant tolerance by responding to abiotic stresses, such as nutrient deficiency, drought, high temperature, and light stress. Strigolactones (SLs) are carotenoid derivatives that occur naturally in plants and are defined as novel phytohormones that regulate plant metabolism, growth, and development. Strigolactone assists plants in the acquisition of defensive characteristics against drought stress by initiating physiological responses and mediating the interaction with soil microorganisms. Nutrient deficiency is an important abiotic stress facto

Rhizobia are symbiotic bacteria able to invade and colonize the roots of legume plants, inducing the formation of nodules, where bacteria reduce atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). Riboflavin availability influences the capacity of rhizobia to survive in the rhizosphere and to colonize roots. In this study, we identified the RL1692 gene of Rhizobium leguminosarum downstream of a flavin mononucleotide (FMN) riboswitch. RL1692 encodes a putative transmembrane permease with two EamA domains. The presence of an FMN riboswitch regulating a transmembrane protein is usually observed in ribofl

Pollution of the agricultural land by the toxic chromium is a global threat that has accelerated dramatically since the beginning of industrial revolution. Toxic chromium affects both the microbial diversity as well as reduces the growth of the plants. Understanding the effect of the chromium reducing and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria on chickpea crop will be useful. Chromium reducing and plant growth promoting Bacillus species PSB10 significantly improved growth, nodulation, chlorophyll, leghaemoglobin, seed yield and grain protein of chickpea crop grown in the presence of different co

Strigolactones (SLs) are multifunctional molecules acting as modulators of plant responses under nutrient deficient conditions. One of the roles of SLs is to promote beneficial association with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi belowground under such stress conditions, mainly phosphorus shortage. Recently, a role of SLs in the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis has been also described. While SLs' function in AM symbiosis is well established, their role in the Rhizobium-legume interaction is still emerging. Recently, SLs have been suggested to stimulate surface motility of rhizobia, opening the possibi

Rhizobia-soybean symbiosis is essential for agriculture and ecosystems, yet it is vulnerable to disruption by cadmium (Cd) pollution. Here, we investigated the protective role of non-nitrogen-fixing bacteria on soybean (Glycine max) under Cd-induced stress. Three Cd-immobilizing bacteria were identified: Arthrobacter sp. CC3, Pseudarthrobacter sp. CC12, and Mesorhizobium sp. CC13. These bacteria reduced the bioavailable Cd content in the soil, decreased Cd accumulation in soybeans, and increased nodule nitrogenase activity. However, no nitrogenase genes were identified in the genomes of the th

The swift emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across interconnected One Health compartments poses a significant global threat. Although plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria possess numerous attributes beneficial to host plants, many of these bacteria also harbor ARGs, necessitating a focused assessment of their negative implications. In this context, here we performed whole genome sequencing of 14 PGP endophytic strains isolated from root nodules of faba beans, belonging to three Klebsiella oxytoca species complex (KoSC): K. grimontii (n = 5), K. michiganensis (n = 5), and K. past

Intracellular plant-microbe interactions rely on host-derived interface membranes: as sites for reciprocal nutrient and signal exchange during symbiosis, or as conduits for asymmetrical nutrient acquisition and effector delivery by pathogens. Sustaining these dynamic structures places substantial metabolic and vesicular trafficking demands on host cells. This review examines how cell cycle reprogramming may help plants meet these demands. During plant-pathogen interactions, biotrophic pathogens can reprogram host cell cycle pathways to establish metabolically favorable niches, whereas plant im

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is emerging as an important signalling molecule that regulates plant growth and abiotic stress responses. However, the roles of H2 S in symbiotic nitrogen (N) assimilation and remobilization have not been characterized. Therefore, we examined how H2 S influences the soybean (Glycine max)/rhizobia interaction in terms of symbiotic N fixation and mobilization during N deficiency-induced senescence. H2 S enhanced biomass accumulation and delayed leaf senescence through effects on nodule numbers, leaf chlorophyll contents, leaf N resorption efficiency, and the N contents in

Black alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.) belongs to dual mycorrhizal trees, forming ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbuscular (AM) root structures, as well as represents actinorrhizal plants that associate with nitrogen-fixing actinomycete Frankia sp. We hypothesized that the unique ternary structure of symbionts can influence community structure of other plant-associated microorganisms (bacterial and fungal endophytes), particularly under seasonally changing salinity in A. glutinosa roots. In our study we analyzed black alder root bacterial and fungal microbiome present at two forest test sites (salin

Acidity affected which members of an indigenous soil population of Rhizobium trifolii nodulated Trifolium subterraneum L. cv. Mt. Barker. In three experiments involving plants grown either in mineral salts agar adjusted to pH 4.8 or 6.8 and inoculated with a soil suspension or grown directly in samples of unamended soil (pH 4.8) or soil amended with CaCO(3) (pH 6.4), 121 of 151 isolates of R. trifolii were placed into four serogroups. Seventy-nine of these isolates were placed into two serogroups (6 and 36) whose nodulating ability was affected by the pH of the plant root environment. Represen

The increasing release of nanoplastics (NPx) and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) into terrestrial ecosystems poses emerging risks to soil biota and the food chain. The effects of NPx contamination on soybean growth and N2 fixation potential in the presence of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) remain poorly understood. This study investigated the accumulation and phytotoxicity of polystyrene nanoplastic (PS NPx) and NiO-NPs in soybean and their effects on nitrogen fixation potential. Single or co-application of NPx and NiO-NPs (100 mg kg-1) markedly reduced photosynthetic efficiency (8-48%),

INTRODUCTION: Renowned for its role in traditional Chinese medicine, Panax notoginseng exhibits healing properties including bidirectional regulatory effects on hematological system diseases. However, the presence of nodular structures near the top of the main root, known as nail heads, may impact the quality of the plant's valuable roots.
OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we aim to systematically analyze nail heads to identify their potential correlation with P. notoginseng quality. Additionally, we will investigate the molecular mechanisms behind nail head development.
METHODS: Morphological char

The present study was made to isolate and assess some physiological characteristics of root nodule-colonizing fungi. During this study, 17 fungal species were isolated from root nodule samples taken from faba bean plants (Vicia faba L.) collected from different sites at Assiut area (Egypt). The growth of faba bean plants in pots was significantly promoted by soil inoculation with most fungi. Growth was checked in pots with inocula of Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium moniliforme, F: oxysporium, F solani, Macrophominia phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani which were added separately. All grow

Nodule-forming bacteria play crucial roles in plant health and nutrition by providing fixed nitrogen to leguminous plants. Despite the importance of this relationship, how nodule-forming bacteria are affected by plant exudates and soil minerals is not fully characterized. Here, the effects of plant-derived methanol and lanthanide metals on the growth of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobiales are examined. Prior work has demonstrated that select Bradyrhizobium strains can assimilate methanol only in the presence of lanthanide metals; however, the pathway enabling assimilation remains unknown. In this stud

Legumes can meet their nitrogen requirements through root nodule symbiosis, which could also trigger plant systemic resistance against pests. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, a legume pest, can harbour different facultative symbionts (FS) influencing various traits of their hosts. It is therefore worth determining if and how the symbionts of the plant and the aphid modulate their interaction. We used different pea aphid lines without FS or with a single one (Hamiltonella defensa, Regiella insecticola, Serratia symbiotica) to infest Medicago truncatula plants inoculated with Sinorhizobium mel
