Plant viruses cause a variety of diseases in susceptible hosts. The disease symptoms often include leaf malformations and other developmental abnormalities, suggesting that viruses can affect plant development. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying virus interference with plant morphogenesis. Here, we show that a C-4 type zinc-finger (ZF) protein, p12, encoded by a carlavirus (chrysanthemum virus B) can induce cell proliferation, which results in hyperplasia and severe leaf malformation. We demonstrate that the p12 protein activates expression of a regulator of cell size and

Tomato yellow leaf curl China virus (TYLCCNV) is a major agricultural pathogen and primary model for circular single-stranded DNA (cssDNA) virus studies. The infectious clones of TYLCCNV and other cssDNA viruses are usually constructed as two tandem copies of the small viral genomes in Agrobacterium-mediated T-DNA vectors. However, during our experiment, we observed that successive cultivation of the agrobacterial infectious clone of TYLCCNV led to a reduction or complete loss of its virulence in host plants. Further analysis revealed that the instability of this infectious clone is analogous

Viral infections and associated diseases are responsible for a substantial number of mortality and public health problems around the world. Each year, infectious diseases kill 3.5 million people worldwide. The current pandemic caused by COVID-19 has become the greatest health hazard to people in their lifetime. There are many antiviral drugs and vaccines available against viruses, but they have many disadvantages, too. There are numerous side effects for conventional drugs, and active mutation also creates drug resistance against various viruses. This has led scientists to search herbs as a so

Influenza A viruses are responsible for annual epidemics and occasional pandemics, which cause significant morbidity and mortality. The limited protection offered by influenza vaccination, and the emergence of drug-resistant influenza strains, highlight the urgent need for the development of novel anti-influenza drugs. However, the search for antiviral substances from the library of low molecular weight chemical compounds is limited. Thus, because of their natural diversity and accessibility, plants or plant-derived materials are rapidly becoming valuable sources for the discovery and developm

Influenza viruses pose a significant global public health threat, leading to recurrent seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics. The rising prevalence of drug-resistant strains highlights the urgent need for new antiviral agents with alternative mechanisms of action. Plant-derived natural products have emerged as promising antiviral resources due to their chemical diversity and wide range of biological activities. Stigmasterol, a naturally occurring phytosterol found in various plants, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; however, its antiviral potential again

Background: Viruses cause various human diseases, some of which become pandemic outbreaks. This study synthesized evidence on antiviral medicinal plants in Africa which could potentially be further studied for viral infections including Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment. Methods: PUBMED, CINAHIL, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Google databases were searched through keywords; antiviral, plant, herb, and Africa were combined using "AND" and "OR". In-vitro studies, in-vivo studies, or clinical trials on botanical medicine used for the treatment of viruses in Africa were included. Results

Stressed plants emit a variety of chemicals into the environment, leading to increased pest resistance in neighbouring plants but the genetic and molecular mechanisms of the emissions remain obscure. Recently, Gong et al. identified novel methyl salicylate (MeSA)-mediated airborne defence that confers resistance to neighbouring plants against aphids and viruses.

Lipid droplets (LDs), which are dedicated to storing neutral lipids (NLs), are dynamic organelles involved in numerous other functions, including membrane remodeling during abiotic stress. While the hijacking of LDs by animal viruses is well documented, their role(s) in plant virus infection remains largely unexplored. Similar to animal viruses, plant potyviruses reroute host proteins, intracellular membranes, and lipids to create an optimized microenvironment for their efficient viral replication compartment (VRC) assembly and movement. We therefore investigated whether potyviruses can also e

Phlox (Phlox spp., Polemoniaceae) are herbaceous ornamental plants that are cultivated around the world for their fascinating flowering. P. paniculata cultivar collections at the Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden and the Botanical Garden of Lomonosov Moscow State University (both in Moscow, Russia) were surveyed for virus diseases using high-throughput sequencing and RT-PCR. Twenty-seven plants with virus-like symptoms on the leaves were selected for analysis. Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), Arabis mosaic virus (ArMV), ArMV satellite RNA (satRNA), beet ringspot nepovirus (BRSV), BRSV satRNA, cucumber

Artificial small RNAs (art-sRNAs) mediate highly specific RNAi in plants, but their broader use has been constrained by long precursor architectures and dependence on transgenic delivery. Recent work shows that accurate and efficient art-sRNA biogenesis can be achieved using precursors of minimal size rather than full-length endogenous scaffolds, without compromising silencing efficacy. We discuss how minimal art-sRNA precursors represent a versatile platform for precision RNAi and, critically, unlock RNA viruses as stable, programmable platforms for the production of highly specific art-sRNAs

Picorna-like viruses are a loosely defined group of positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses that are major pathogens of animals, plants and insects. They include viruses that are of enormous economic and public-health concern and are responsible for animal diseases (such as poliomyelitis), plant diseases (such as sharka) and insect diseases (such as sacbrood). Viruses from the six divergent families (the Picornaviridae, Caliciviridae, Comoviridae, Sequiviridae, Dicistroviridae and Potyviridae) that comprise the picorna-like virus superfamily have the following features in common: a genome w

Understanding global viral dynamics is critical for public health. Traditional surveillance focuses on individual pathogens and symptomatic cases, which may miss asymptomatic infections or newly emerging viruses, delaying detection and response. Wastewater-based epidemiology has been used to track pathogens through targeted molecular assays, but its reliance on predefined targets limits detection of the full viral spectrum. Here, we analyse longitudinal wastewater samples from 62 cities across six continents (2017-2019) using metagenomics and capture-based sequencing with probes targeting viru

Insect-mediated transmission is central to the epidemiology of plant viruses and has major implications for global food security and agricultural production. Although several resources have compiled information on plant virus transmission, evidence-traceable integration of virus-insect vector-host plant relationships remains limited. Here, we developed the Virus-Insect-Plant Database (VIP-DB), an evidence-guided database that links literature-derived virus-insect transmission records, host plant information, transmission mode annotations, taxonomic information, and traceable literature evidenc

Previous studies reported that some types of variegation are caused by reduction of chlorophyll and infection of pathogens, and the variegated leaves showed lower photosynthetic capacity. To elucidate the mechanisms that control the variegation, we observed a variegated individual of camellia cultivar 'Kumagai' in which leaves are variegated only on the adaxial side. We found for the first time in seed plants that the amount of chloroplasts was decreased only in palisade tissue while healthy chloroplasts were maintained in spongy tissue. Variegated parts of leaves of variegated plant of 'Kumag

Plants defend themselves from viral infection using RNA interference (RNAi), an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that degrades viral RNA through the production of small interfering RNAs. As a counter defense, viral suppressors of RNA silencing (VSRs) inhibit plant RNAi machinery, aiding viral replication and transmission. P0, a VSR encoded by the potato leafroll virus (PLRV), family Polerovirus, suppresses RNAi by targeting the plant protein ARGONATE 1 for degradation through its F-box motif interaction with an Skp1 subunit of the family of E3 ubiquitin ligases. Our previous work shows that

Physalis peruviana L. (Cape gooseberry) is susceptible to several pathogens, among which the sobemovirus physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) is most prominent. This study investigated the anatomical, morphophysiological, and metabolic responses of P. peruviana to PhyRMV over the course of the infection cycle. P. peruviana plants were grown under greenhouse conditions (24 ± 2 ℃) and mechanically inoculated with buffer (mock) or PhyRMV inoculum. The local and systemic leaves were collected at 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 42 days after inoculation (DAI) and viral infection was confirmed by RT-qPCR. Mor

Viruses within the Bunyaviridae family are tri-segmented, negative-stranded RNA viruses. The family includes several emerging and re-emerging viruses of humans, animals and plants, such as Rift Valley fever virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, La Crosse virus, Schmallenberg virus and tomato spotted wilt virus. Many bunyaviruses are arthropod-borne, so-called arboviruses. Depending on the genus, bunyaviruses encode, in addition to the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and the different structural proteins, one or several non-structural proteins. These non-structural proteins are not always

Two of the earliest treatises in Ayurveda, the 'Charaka Samhita' and the 'Sushruta Samhita', describe numerous medicinal plants used in the treatment of Jwara (fever). Systematic studies carried out on these plants registered for 'Jwara' are of high significance in antiviral drug development. This article is a comprehensive review of the antiviral studies on medicinal plants listed for 'Jwara' in 'Charaka-Sushruta Samhitas', their antiviral entities and modes of action. The botanical names of the medicinal plants used for 'Jwara' were elucidated from their Sanskrit names in 'Charaka-Sushruta S

Zone electrophoresis (ZE) in concentration gradients of sucrose proved to be a powerful technique in the purification of viruses although it is seldomly used as a single step for the separation of the infective agent from extraneous matter but usually as a final procedure. No difficulties were experienced in the purification of plant viruses with ZE possibly because of the resistance of the agents to the chloroform butanol treatment which the impure plant viruses received prior to the ZE. Likewise no difficulties were encountered during purification of human and animal picorna viruses because

Sarracenia purpurea is a carnivorous plant historically used to treat smallpox infections. Our previous data found S. purpurea had broad spectrum antiviral activity in vitro. S. purpurea is one of several hundred identified carnivorous species of plants. Carnivorous plants have evolved through convergent evolution in at least ten independent events, usually in response to harsh environments where nutrition from prey is required for growth. These prey are known vectors of plant viruses that might introduce novel biotic stressors and defense pathways in carnivorous plants. This study evaluated t
