Insight of oral vaccines as an alternative approach to health and disease management: An innovative intuition and challenges.

Vaccination is the most suitable and persuasive healthcare program for the prohibition of various deadly diseases. However, the higher production cost and purification strategies are out of reach for the developing nations. In this scenario, development of edible vaccine turns out to be the most promising alternative for remodeling the pharmaceutical industry with reduced production and purification costs. Generally, oral route of vaccination is mostly preferred due to its safety, compliance, low manufacturing cost and most importantly the ability to induce immunity in both systemic and mucosa

Feeding transgenic plants that express a tolerogenic fusion protein effectively protects against arthritis.

Although much explored, oral tolerance for treatment of autoimmune diseases still awaits the establishment of novel and effective vectors. We investigated whether the tolerogenic CTA1(R7K)-COL-DD fusion protein can be expressed in edible plants, to induce oral tolerance and protect against arthritis. The fusion protein was recombinantly expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana plants, which were fed to H-2(q) -restricted DBA/1 mice to assess the preventive effect on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). The treatment resulted in fewer mice exhibiting disease and arthritis scores were significantly reduce

[Phytochemicals that counteract the cardiotoxic side effects of cancer chemotherapy].

Almost all clinically used antitumor drugs exhibit toxic side effects affecting heart function. Because of cardiotoxicity during anticancer chemotherapy, effective doses of cytostatics have to be limited, which may worsen antitumor efficacy. The cardiotoxicity induced by cytostatics of the anthracycline group in particular results, among others, from massive stimulation of ROS. It has therefore been suggested that some phytochemicals with high antioxidant potential, when administered together with antitumor agents, could decrease the toxic side effects of chemotherapy and reduce the risk of he

[Development of a PCR method based on CYC2 for specific identification of Bauhinia species in edible flowers].

Bauhinia species are known for their medicinal and nutritional value in south China, with their flowers and tender leaves widely as important food materials and health food ingredients. However, their similar appearance to other plants, especially the toxic species, creates a serious risk of confusion with toxic plants during collection, processing, and marketing. A notable case is the edible B. acuminata, which closely resembles the highly toxic Rhododendron decorum. Multiple poisoning cases have resulted from this confusion in the marketplace, necessitating rapid and reliable identification

Acute death Camas (Toxicoscordion venenosum) plant poisoning in seven family members following foraging for wild onions.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional plant ingestions and poisoning are common. Generally, these ingestions are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Increased toxicity is often associated with the foraging for plants incorrectly identified as edible plants. We present a case series of seven family members poisoned by suspected Death Camas, also known as Meadow Death Camas, (Toxicoscordion venenosum), when the plant was misidentified as edible while foraging for Wild Onion (Allium canadense). CASE SERIES: Five children and two adults presented to the emergency department after eating bulbs of suspected

Transformation of an edible crop with the pagA gene of Bacillus anthracis.

Vaccination against anthrax is the most important strategy to combat the disease. This study describes a generation of edible transgenic crop expressing, functional protective antigen (PA). In vitro studies showed that the plant-expressed antigen is qualitatively similar to recombinant PA. Immunization studies in mouse animal models indicated the generation of PA-specific neutralizing antibodies and stressed the need for improving expression levels to generate higher antibody titers. Genetic engineering of a plant organelle offers immense scope for increasing levels of antigen expression. An A

Characterization of Nanovesicles Isolated from Olive Vegetation Water.

Edible plant and fruit-derived nanovesicles (NVs) are membrane-enclosed particles with round-shape morphology and signaling functions, which resemble mammalian cell-derived extracellular vesicles. These NVs can transmit cross-kingdom signals as they contain bioactive molecules and exert biological effects on mammalian cells. Their properties and stability in the gastrointestinal tract suggest NVs as a promising nutraceutical tool. In this study, we have demonstrated for the first time the presence of NVs in olive vegetation water (OVW), a waste by-product generated during olive oil production.
