Dietary modulation of the gut microbiome is a promising approach for improving fish health and sustainability in aquaculture. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from Artemia shells, has gained attention as a functional prebiotic feed additive due to its antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. The effects of dietary chitosan on gut microbial diversity and community composition were evaluated in Channa striata (murrel) fingerlings. Fish were fed three experimental diets: a basal diet (Exp-1), a black soldier fly larvae (BSFL)-based control diet (in which BSFL meal was used as a primary protei

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial infection seriously restricts the healthy culture of Monopterus albus. Scutellaria baicalensis extract (SBE) is a natural plant‑derived additive with antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary SBE supplementation on growth performance, intestinal health, gut microbiota and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila infection in juvenile Asian swamp eel.
METHODS: A 60‑day feeding trial was performed. Five diets were formulated with 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 3% SBE (CK, SBE‑A, SBE‑B, SBE‑C, SBE‑D). Growth indices, intestinal

To investigate the combined effects of soybean lecithin (SL) with vitamin C (VC) or inositol (INO) on growth, gonadal development, and intestinal microbiota, 2-year-old longsnout catfish (Leiocassis longirostris) were fed four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets for 12 weeks, including a control diet, a 4% SL diet, a 4% SL + 0.5% VC (SC) diet, and a 4% SL + 0.5% INO (SI) diet. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant diet × sex interaction for weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) (p < 0.05). In females, the SI group exhibited the highest WGR and SGR, while

Acute gastrointestinal infection (AGI) represents a significant public health concern. To control and treat AGI, it is critical to quickly and accurately identify its causes. The use of novel multiplex molecular assays for pathogen detection and identification provides a unique opportunity to improve pathogen detection, and better understand risk factors and burden associated with AGI in the community. In this study, de-identified results from BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel were obtained from January 01, 2016 to October 31, 2018 through BioFire® Syndromic Trends (Trend), a clo

The genetic determinants for the complete Shigella sonnei lipopolysaccharide (LPS) have been cloned, characterized by restriction mapping, and expressed in heterologous genetic backgrounds, including Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae live attenuated vaccine strains. The rfb/rfc locus encoding the polymerized serotype-specific O polysaccharide was mapped within 23 kb of DNA isolated from S. sonnei virulence plasmid pWR105. A highly similar chromosomal DNA sequence was identified by Southern hybridization analysis in Plesiomonas shigelloides known to have the same O serotype specificity as S.

Although antibiotics are the main therapy for bacterial infections, the reports showed that the overuse (or misuse) of antibiotics will results in several problems such as the development of antibiotic-resistant strains, persistence of drug residues, and numerous environmental concerns. Therefore, finding antibiotic alternatives is considered of vital importance. Investigation of the antimicrobial properties of several plant substances and extracts is of great value to replace antibiotics. With this objective, this study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of an ethanolic extract pr

We have used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect shigellae, EIEC and ETEC in stool specimens of diarrhoeic patients returning from tropical countries. As compared to culture (7.1% positive specimens), which recognizes only Shigella strains, PCR performed on bacterial growth from directly inoculated MacConkey agar plates and directed against virulence-associated genes present in both Shigella and EIEC was positive in 19.8% of the samples. We assumed that these additional positive results represent true rather than false positive samples because identical results for each single specim

BACKGROUND: In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a flare can be due to natural history of disease or due to gastrointestinal infection. Infection is conventionally diagnosed by stool microscopy and culture. Stool multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay or Biofire® FilmArray® GI Panel is a sensitive and rapid test for detecting infection, but is expensive; its impact on management and cost-effectiveness has not been studied in IBD.
AIMS: To compare stool PCR assay and conventional tests during IBD flare for detection of infection, impact of detection on treatment and cost-effectiveness

Initial numbers of bacteria associated with wild (brown trout and pike) and cultured (rainbow trout) freshwater fish as well as with the water in which they were caught were determined. Subsequently, a total of 979 randomly selected isolates were characterized and identified to the genus level. For all counts performed (aerobes, psychrotrophs, anaerobes, Enterobacteriaceae, and enterococci), no significant differences were observed in water samples, the highest level corresponding to psychrotrophs in pike environments (4.23 X 10(3) CFU/ml). Overall, the skin and intestinal content of brown tro

UNLABELLED: Historic detection methods for diarrheal pathogens are time-consuming, laborious, and may lack specificity and sensitivity. Multiplexed molecular panels for enteric pathogens are widely used for rapid and accurate results. We evaluated the performance of the investigational use only (IUO) Hologic Panther Fusion GI Bacterial and Expanded Bacterial assays (Fusion GI Bac), the Verigene Enteric Pathogens (EP), and BioFire FilmArray Gastrointestinal (BioFire GI) panels for the detection of primary bacterial causes of gastrointestinal infection. We conducted a multi-platform evaluation f

Gallstone disease is a prevalent biliary disease worldwide, and bacteria play vital roles in the disease development and progression, as well as the prognosis after endoscopic surgery. However, there have been limited studies to explore the key taxa involved. In this study, bile samples from healthy controls (HCs, liver donors without hepatobiliary disease) and three diseased groups, namely patients with gallbladder stones (GBS), patients with common bile duct stones (CBDS), and patients with stricture in the common bile duct (SCBD), were collected and analyzed. Bacterial community characteriz

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, disproportionally affecting persons residing in low and middle-income countries. Accessing high-resolution surveillance data to understand community-level etiology and risk remains challenging, particularly in remote and resource limited populations. A multi-year prospective cohort study was conducted in two rural and two peri-urban villages in Cambodia from 2012 to 2018 to describe the epidemiology and etiology of acute diarrheal diseases within the population. Suspected diarrheal episodes among participants were self-reported

Avian coccidiosis is an intestinal parasitic disease introduced by Eimeria spp., causing a major economic loss in the world poultry industry. Eimeria necatrix is the most pathogenic species that causes acute coccidiosis in chickens, leading to high mortality. Studies have shown that disruption of the gut environment due to Eimeria infection causes an imbalance in intestinal homeostasis. However, changes in the intestinal microbiota of chickens infected with E. necatrix remain unclear. In the present study, we performed full-length 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon sequencing to assess the effects of

INTRODUCTION: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a subclinical intestinal disorder, is characterized by chronic fecal-oral exposure to entero-pathogens and could be diagnosed by measuring non-invasive biomarkers. Escherichia coli is the one of the key bacterial enteric pathogens that drives EED, but there is a lack of information on the E. coli pathotypes in relation to the biomarkers of EED in malnourished adults. Here, we intended to measure the possible association of these pathotypes with EED biomarkers and nutritional status of adults residing in a slum in Bangladesh.
METHOD: Fecal
