A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted, in which participatory appraisal methods were applied to validate Dasenech and Gnyangatom pastoralists' existing veterinary knowledge on endemic diseases and to determine their perception of rank, morbidity, and mortality of the disease. The participatory methods used were matrix scoring, proportional piling, pairwise ranking, and clinical observation. A total of 96 informants were included in the study to collect in-depth information. Ranking using proportional piling (W > 0.38;p > 0.05) and pairwise ranking (p > 0.05) based on the impact

The most important pathogenic Mycoplasma species in bovines are Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides (Mmm). Mmm causes contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), which is a severe respiratory disease widespread in sub-Saharan Africa but eradicated in several countries, including China. M. bovis is an important cause of the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRD), characterized worldwide by pneumonia, arthritis, and mastitis. Secreted proteins of bacteria are generally considered virulence factors because they can act as toxins, adhesins, and virulent enzymes in i

Two of the most important diseases of cattle are caused by mycoplasmas. Mycoplasma bovis is a world-wide bovine pathogen that can cause pneumonia, mastitis and arthritis. It has now spread to most, if not all, cattle-rearing countries. Due to its increasing resistance to antimicrobial therapy, vaccination is the principal focus of the control of infection, but effective vaccines are currently lacking. Despite being eradicated from most parts of the world, Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, the cause of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), continues to plague sub-Saharan Africa, affectin

Livestock-wildlife interactions promote the transmission of a wide range of infectious diseases that constraint livestock production. We used a participatory appraisal approach to find out and rank infectious diseases of concern to pastoralists in a zone of intense wildlife-livestock interaction and another zone with limited interactions. Four villages were selected purposively in areas with intensive cattle-wildlife interactions (zone 1), and another two in areas with low to moderate cattle-wildlife interactions (zone 2). Data were collected in focus group discussions (FGDs) using participato

Human vaccinology, with its primary focus on the individual, seems far removed from veterinary medicine, with its concern for the health of the herd. Yet several episodes in the past (smallpox, fowl cholera, anthrax, swine erysipelas, rabies, tuberculosis, etc.) serve to illustrate the proximity between research on veterinary and human vaccines. In some cases the human vaccine was developed first, while in other cases it was the animal vaccine. The history of vaccinology clearly demonstrates the importance of these 'two medicines' working together. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccines were am

Twenty of 28 calves, 10-12 weeks of age when given intravenous injections of the galactan from Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, showed transient apnoea, increased pulmonary arterial and decreased systemic arterial blood pressures, and increased packed-cell volume. Necropsy revealed haemorrhages associated with alveolar ducts and vessel walls, areas of pulmonary oedema, usually associated with the haemorrhages, dilated airways and, in some, capillary thrombosis. Animals that had shown changes in blood pressure and respiration in response to a dose of galactan did not react to a second dose

Transboundary pathogens of goats present significant constraints to the livelihoods of millions of farmers in countries such as Zambia. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp), foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV), Brucella spp., Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in Zambian goats. Another aim was to identify associations between seroprevalence and different predictor variables, such as trade and border proximity. From September to October 2019, 962 serum samples were

Participatory methods were used to assess the impact of a community-based animal health worker (CAHW) project in two remote pastoralist districts of Ethiopia. The CAHW project had been operating for 3 years at the time of the assessment. Participatory methods were standardized and repeated with 10 groups of informants in the project area. The assessment showed significant reductions in disease impact for diseases handled by CAHWs compared with diseases not handled by CAHWs. In camels, there was significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the impact of mange, trypanosomosis, helminthosis, anthrax and

Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (M. capripneumoniae), the causal agent of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), is a member of the so-called Mycoplasma mycoides cluster. These mycoplasmas have two rRNA operons in which intraspecific variations have been demonstrated. The sequences of the 16S rRNA genes of both operons from 13 field strains of M. capripneumoniae from three neighbouring African countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania) were determined. Four new and unique polymorphism patterns reflecting the intraspecific variations were found. Two of these patterns included le

A 6-year retrospective study (2000-2005) of animals slaughtered at the Zango abattoir in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria was carried out to determine disease conditions encountered in slaughtered animals. Records kept at the abattoir were analysed. A total of 69,307 cattle, 3,820 goats and 1,763 sheep were slaughtered for the period under study. Of the 69,307 cattle slaughtered for the period, 22,459 (32.41%) were males and 46,848 (67.59%) were females, while 1,763 sheep were slaughtered comprising of 506 (28.70%) males and 1,257 (71.30%) females, and 3,820 goats made up of 1,212 (31.73%) males a

Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony type (MmmSC), is a devastating respiratory disease of cattle. In sub-Saharan Africa, where CBPP is enzootic, live attenuated vaccines are deployed but afford only short-lived protection. In cattle, recovery from experimental MmmSC infection has been associated with the presence of CD4(+) T lymphocytes that secrete interferon gamma in response to MmmSC, and in particular to the lipoprotein A (LppA) antigen. In an effort to develop a better vaccine against CBPP, a viral vector (Ad5-LppA) that exp

Climate change poses a significant threat to livestock production and animal health globally, with particular implications for Burkina Faso. This study explores the links between climate patterns and the resurgence of five major livestock diseases in Burkina Faso, using climatic records from 1961 to 2020 and veterinary clinical data from 2003 to 2019 collected across the Sahel, Sudan-sahel and Sudan climatic zones. The annual and seasonal climate trends were compared over two climatological periods (1961-1990 and 1991-2020) using two independent t-test. It is was found significant changes in r

A retrospective Sero-prevalence analysis was conducted in 2012 in order to find out whether contagious caprine pleuro-pneumonia (CCPP) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) had already been introduced in Mtwara and Lindi regions of Southern Tanzania by 2007 and 2009. A total of 477 randomly selected sera from a bank of 3500 small ruminant samples that were collected as part of Rift Valley Fever surveillance of 2007 in Mtwara and Lindi regions were used in this study. Seroconversion was also evaluated in the 504 sera that were collected in 2009 as part of disease outbreak investigations in Tanda

Mycoplasma leachii is a member of the "Mycoplasma mycoides cluster", which includes the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides). Mycoplasma leachii has been associated with severe outbreaks of polyarthritis, mastitis, and abortion in dairy cattle in Australia, Argentina, and China. As M. leachii has veterinary implications and is related to other foreign animal diseases of economic importance, we sought to investigate differences in adherence to and invasion of different bovine cells between M. leachii type strain PG50 and M. bovis strains (ty

Feline polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder caused by the mutation of PKD1 gene that eventually lead to the development of chronic kidney disease. The latter condition causes hypertension and eventually progress into congestive heart failure. Feline parvovirus (FPV) is a highly contagious and often fatal disease infecting cats and other members of Felidae. An 8-month-old female domestic shorthair cat was presented with complaint of wound dehiscence a day after ovarian hysterectomy procedure. The wound at the suture site appeared necrotic, purulent with foul smell. The cat w

Animal health is a prerequisite for global health, economic development, food security, food quality, and poverty reduction, while mitigating against climate change and biodiversity loss. We did a qualitative review of 53 infectious diseases in terrestrial animals with data from DISCONTOOLS, a specialist database and prioritisation model focusing on research gaps for improving infectious disease control in animals. Many diseases do not have any appropriate control tools, but the prioritisation model suggests that we should focus international efforts on Nipah virus infection, African swine fev

The term "emerging diseases" has been used recently to refer to different scenarios, all of which indicate changes in the dynamics of disease in the population. Of the OIE List A diseases, major changes have been experienced with rinderpest, peste des petit ruminants (PPR), contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, lumpy skin disease, and Rift Valley fever. Rinderpest represents a success story of the 1990s, thanks to the programs of the Pan African Rinderpest Campaign (PARC). The situation has changed from that of the 1980s when rinderpest was wide

PURPOSE: More than 80 % of the 20 million heads of Nigerian cattle are kept by pastoral households. As such, optimal herd management is important in maintaining human nutrition, livelihoods and socio-cultural balance. This study was conducted to contribute to discussions on emerging challenges of the Nigerian livestock sector and to estimate herd prevalence, relative incidence, case fatality and impact on livelihood of cattle diseases in pastoral areas.
METHODS: Participatory epidemiological approaches: listing; pairwise ranking; proportional piling; matrix scoring and probing were used to co

Mycoplasma capricolum subsp.subsp. capripneumonia (Mccp) and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp.sbusp. capri (Mmc) cause caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and mycoplasmal pneumonia in goats and sheep (MPGS), respectively. These diseases cannot be identified on clinical symptoms alone and it is laborious to distinguish them using biochemical methods. It is therefore important to establish a simple, rapid identification method for Mccp and Mmc. Here, we report a high-resolution melting (HRM) curve analysis using specific primers based on the Mmc 95010 strain MLC_0560 and Mccp F38 strain MCCPF38_00984 gene s
