Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a trauma patient presenting with pneumoperitoneum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare and usually benign condition in which multiple thin-walled cysts develop in the submucosa or subserosa of the gastrointestinal tract. While usually asymptomatic, severe cases can result in pneumoperitoneum, which can be managed surgically or medically depending on circumstances. We present a case of a patient with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, which presented as pneumoperitoneum following trauma. To our knowledge, there are no other published cases in which a trauma patient with pneumoperitoneum was found to have radiologic evidenc

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) with sigmoid volvulus:a case potentially associated with lymphatic vessels].

An 80-year-old woman was brought to our hospital in an ambulance because of signs of peritoneal irritation. Computed tomography revealed volvulus, sigmoid colon dilation, and free air and pneumatosis within the colonic and bowel wall. An emergency laparotomy was performed after the diagnosis of colonic perforation associated with volvulus or pneumatosis. Numerous gas-filled cysts, up to 10mm in diameter, were located in the resected bowel wall. The cells at the inner lining of the cysts tested positive for D2-40 immunoreactivity, seemingly originating from the lymphatic vessels. In many cysts,

A Rare Case of Hypermobile Mesentery With Segmental Small Bowel Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis.

Pneumatosis intestinalis is a rare condition that affects 0.03% of the population. Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall and the submucosa and/or intestinal subserosa. It is usually a secondary finding caused by a wide variety of underlying gastrointestinal or extragastrointestinal diseases. Here, we present the case of a 47-year-old man who was referred to our gastroenterology department with a history suggestive of intermittent small bowel obstruction associated with abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tom

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with systemic sclerosis, limited type resulting in a poor prognosis.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of multilocular intramural clusters of gas in the alimentary tract and has been considered to have a favorable response to conservative treatment. We describe the first case of limited type of systemic sclerosis (SSc) with PCI. A 74-year-old Japanese woman presented with a 4-month history of an unhealed cutaneous ulcer on the right third finger, along with sclerodactyly of bilateral hands. Proximal skin sclerosis was absent. The patient reported acute abdominal pain, and a diagnosis of PCI was established

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in progressive systemic sclerosis: a case report and literature review.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon disease manifestation characterized by the presence of air in the bowel wall. It is a benign condition that often responds to conservative management; however, it may be a harbinger of end stage disease, particularly in progressive systemic sclerosis. The authors report a case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis in the setting of mixed connective tissue disease that responded to conservative treatment. They review the current literature on pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, focusing on p

Case report: the "aurora sign"--a new sonographic sign of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by multiple gas-filled cysts of varying size within the intestinal wall. Although the characteristic findings on plain abdominal radiograph, computed tomography (CT), and barium enema have been well described, the sonographic findings have not. We recently encountered a case of PCI in which abdominal sonography disclosed a unique finding. We were able to reproduce the finding experimentally and have coined it the "aurora sign".

[Trichloroethylene concentration in the work environment in relation to the development of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis].

Four cases of primary pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) were studied in relation to occupational trichloroethylene (TRI) exposure. Three of the patients were exposed to TRI in the process of washing or polishing of camera lenses. The maximum concentration of TRI in the work environment of two PCI patients often exceeded 50 ppm, though the geometric mean concentrations were below this value. Monitoring of TRI exposure by measuring urinary TRI metabolites suggested that the third patient had been working in the environment with an 8-h time weighted average TRI concentration exceeding 50 p

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with extensive intraperitoneal free air, retroperitoneal emphysema, and pneumomediastinum:a case report].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is characterized by the presence of several gas-filled cysts within the intestinal wall. Here, we report an exceptionally rare case, wherein pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis extended from the ileum through the right colon to the splenic flexure, accompanied by intraperitoneal free air, retroperitoneal emphysema, and mediastinal emphysema. The patient reported a complex medical history, including interstitial lung disease and bronchial asthma, and received steroid treatment alongside α-glucosidase inhibitors for diabetes mellitus. Conservative management was

Acute abdomen with gastric volvulus revealing an underlying pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis intestinalis is an abnormal presence of free air outside the lumen of the intestines in many shapes. It is classified based on its etiology to primary or secondary, it affects adults as well as infants and can involve any part of the GI tract. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 55-year-old man with a past medical history of a surgically repaired perforated duodenal ulcer who presented with an acute abdominal pain, Flatulence and constipation. On examination of the abdomen; severe distension, tenderness and tympanicity on percussion were noted. An erect CXR was pe

[Systemic sclerosis with various gastrointestinal problems including pneumoperitoneum, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and malabsorption syndrome].

We describe here an experience of successful treatment of systemic sclerosis (SSc) complicated with various gastrointestinal (GI) problems including pneumoperitoneum, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and malabsorption syndrome. A 35-year-old female had developed selerodactyly since February, 1990. She had been treated under the diagnosis of SSc at other hospital. She had required several hospitalizations because of nausea, vomitting and abdominal distension, but her GI symptoms had gradually deteriorated. In April 1993, she was referred to our hospital and admitted for the treatment of her G

Spontaneous pneumoperitoneum with Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI), a disorder in which gas filled cysts develop within the bowel wall, has been associated with collagen vascular disease, usually progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). We have extended the spectrum of collagen vascular disease associated with PCI by this report of a patient with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) who developed PCI and recurrent spontaneous pneumoperitoneum (SP). Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are reviewed and the management of the asymptomatic patient with pneumoperitoneum, PCI and collagen vascular disease is discussed.

Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis in Muscular Dystrophy and Congenital Myopathies: A Report of Five Cases.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease wherein air accumulates in the intestinal subserosa and submucosa, causing multiple gaseous cysts within the gastrointestinal wall. While PCI has various known risk factors, reports identifying muscular diseases as a factor are scarce. The aim of this study is to elucidate the clinical characteristics of PCI in muscle disease. We present a case series of five cases, including two cases of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and three cases of rare congenital myopathies. All cases are of male patients, with poor intestinal peristalsis and
