Mechanisms underlying tolerance of severe hypoxia in sulfide spring fish.

Isolating the causative effects of single sources of selection in nature is challenging because environments are often complex with different selective pressures covarying along environmental gradients. For instance, sulfide springs are characterized by high levels of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and low levels of oxygen in comparison to nearby non-sulfidic streams, which are normoxic. Previous studies on Poecilia mexicana in these sulfide spring systems have focused on the effects of H2S on gene expression, but hypoxia could also impact gene expression. We compared hypoxia tolerance, baseline

Functional consequences of phenotypic variation between locally adapted populations: Swimming performance and ventilation in extremophile fish.

Natural selection drives the evolution of traits to optimize organismal performance, but optimization of one aspect of performance can influence other aspects of performance. Here, we asked how phenotypic variation between locally adapted fish populations affects locomotion and ventilation, testing for functional trade-offs and trait-performance correlations. Specifically, we investigated two populations of livebearing fish (Poecilia mexicana) that inhabit distinct habitat types (hydrogen-sulphide-rich springs and adjacent nonsulphidic streams). For each individual, we quantified different met

microRNA expression variation as a potential molecular mechanism contributing to adaptation to hydrogen sulphide.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression and can play an important role in modulating organismal development and physiology in response to environmental stress. However, the role of miRNAs in mediating adaptation to diverse environments in natural study systems remains largely unexplored. Here, we characterized miRNAs and their expression in Poecilia mexicana, a species of small fish that inhabits both normal streams and extreme environments in the form of springs rich in toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2 S). We found that P. mexicana has a similar number of miRNA ge

Directional postcopulatory sexual selection revealed by artificial insemination.

Postcopulatory sexual selection comprises both sperm competition, where the sperm from different males compete for fertilization, and cryptic female choice, where females bias sperm use in favour of particular males. Despite intense current interest in both processes as potential agents of directional sexual selection, few studies have attributed the success of attractive males to events that occur exclusively after insemination. This is because the interactions between pre- and post-insemination episodes of sexual selection can be important sources of variation in paternity. The use of artifi

The Impacts of Pregnancy on Cognition and Cell Proliferation in a Live-Bearing Fish (Poeciliopsis gracilis).

Pregnancy is a high-energy process which temporarily decreases cognitive function and affects the neurogenic capacity of the maternal brain. Pregnant females exhibit decreased performance in spatial memory tasks which has been linked to altered neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. While these processes are well-resolved for mammals, whether they are conserved across other, nonmammalian, live-bearing animal lineages without placentation remains enigmatic. Here, we test the relationship between pregnancy and cognition in the live-bearing fish Poecilipsis gracilis. Female P. grac

Has recombination changed during the recent evolution of the guppy Y chromosome?

Genome sequencing and genetic mapping of molecular markers have demonstrated nearly complete Y-linkage across much of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) XY chromosome pair. Predominant Y-linkage of factors controlling visible male-specific coloration traits also suggested that these polymorphisms are sexually antagonistic (SA). However, occasional exchanges with the X are detected, and recombination patterns also appear to differ between natural guppy populations, suggesting ongoing evolution of recombination suppression under selection created by partially sex-linked SA polymorphisms. We used mo

Context is Key: Social Environment Mediates the Impacts of a Psychoactive Pollutant on Shoaling Behavior in Fish.

Behavior-modifying drugs, such as antidepressants, are increasingly being detected in waterways and aquatic wildlife around the globe. Typically, behavioral effects of these contaminants are assessed using animals tested in social isolation. However, for group-living species, effects seen in isolation may not reflect those occurring in realistic social settings. Furthermore, interactions between chemical pollution and other stressors, such as predation risk, are seldom considered. This is true even though animals in the wild are rarely, if ever, confronted by chemical pollution as a single str

Molecular, morphological and experimental assessment of the life cycle of Posthodiplostomum nanum Dubois, 1937 (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) from Brazil, with phylogenetic evidence of the paraphyly of the genus Posthodiplostomum Dubois, 1936.

Species of the genus Posthodiplostomum are intestinal parasites of piscivorous birds with worldwide distribution. Recent molecular surveys have focused on developmental stages from vertebrate hosts, with few sequences from larvae found in molluscs. Moreover, most published molecular data are from collections in North America, Europe and Asia, and there are no data for South American species. In the present study, cercariae found in the freshwater limpet Gundlachia ticaga from Brazil were used for morphological, experimental and molecular studies. The longifurcate cercariae, Neascus-type metace

First report of neurotoxic effect of the cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii on the motility of trematode metacercariae.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) is a photosynthetic cyanobacterium that can produce cytotoxic (cylindrospermopsin) and neurotoxic cyanotoxins (saxitoxins). In Brazil the strains of C. raciborskii are reported to produce only saxitoxins (STX) and their effect on fish parasites has not been tested to date. The fish Poecilia vivipara Bloch and Schneider is a common host for the trematode Pygidiopsis macrostomum Travassos off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and this fish-parasite interaction is a model for behavioural and ecotoxicological studies. The aim of this work was to evaluate the

Parasite-mediated host behavioural modifications: Gyrodactylus turnbulli infected Trinidadian guppies increase contact rates with uninfected conspecifics.

While group formation provides antipredatory defences, increases foraging efficiency and mating opportunities, it can be counterintuitive by promoting disease transmission amongst social hosts. Upon introduction of a pathogen, uninfected individuals often modify their social preferences to reduce infection risk. Infected hosts also exhibit behavioural changes, for example, removing themselves from a group to prevent an epidemic. Conversely, here we show how Trinidadian guppies infected with a directly transmitted ectoparasite, Gyrodactylus turnbulli, significantly increase their contact rates

Parasite transmission in social interacting hosts: monogenean epidemics in guppies.

BACKGROUND: Infection incidence increases with the average number of contacts between susceptible and infected individuals. Contact rates are normally assumed to increase linearly with host density. However, social species seek out each other at low density and saturate their contact rates at high densities. Although predicting epidemic behaviour requires knowing how contact rates scale with host density, few empirical studies have investigated the effect of host density. Also, most theory assumes each host has an equal probability of transmitting parasites, even though individual parasite loa

A major QTL controls susceptibility to spinal curvature in the curveback guppy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the genetic basis of heritable spinal curvature would benefit medicine and aquaculture. Heritable spinal curvature among otherwise healthy children (i.e. Idiopathic Scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis) accounts for more than 80% of all spinal curvatures and imposes a substantial healthcare cost through bracing, hospitalizations, surgery, and chronic back pain. In aquaculture, the prevalence of heritable spinal curvature can reach as high as 80% of a stock, and thus imposes a substantial cost through production losses. The genetic basis of heritable spinal curvature is

The first record of Centrocestus formosanus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) in southern Brazil supported by molecular data.

Centrocestus formosanus is a digenean parasite first described from Asia, which parasitizes Melanoides tuberculata (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) at the first intermediate stage, and different fish species as second intermediate host. C. formosanus was previously recorded in Brazilian states, but never before in the southern region of this country. Recording and identification of digenean species through morphological identification is a taxonomic challenge. In light of this, we use an integrative taxonomic approach to report the occurrence of cercariae and metacercariae of C. formosanus in molluscs

Larvivorous fish in wells target the malaria vector sibling species of the Anopheles culicifacies complex in villages in Karnataka, India.

Malaria was a major problem in a sericulture area of Karnataka, south India, where Anopheles culicifacies s.l. and A. fluviatilis s.l. were considered to be the main vectors. Sibling species complexes of these two species were analysed in three ecologically different villages. Among A. culicifacies, only sibling species A and B were found. In Puram, a village with 22 wells, species A predominated; species B predominated in a village with four wells and a stream, and in a village with a stream and no wells. Poecilia reticulata fish were introduced into all wells and streams in the villages, and

Anxiolytic effects of diazepam in Trinidadian guppies exposed to chemical cues indicating predation risk.

The fear of predation is pervasive among vertebrate prey species, being characterized by neurobiological and behavioral changes induced by risk exposure. To understand the acquisition and attenuation of fearful phenotypes, such as dimensions of posttraumatic stress, researchers often use animal models, with prey fishes recently emerging as a nontraditional but promising model. Much is known about fear acquisition in prey fishes such as the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, which inhabit high and low predation sites. Little is known, however, about whether a guppy model shows fear attenua

Risk of triclosan based on avoidance by the shrimp Palaemon varians in a heterogeneous contamination scenario: How sensitive is this approach?

As the exposure of organisms to contaminants can provoke harmful effects, some organisms try to avoid a continuous exposure by using different strategies. The aim of the current study was to assess the ability of the shrimp Palaemon varians to detect a triclosan gradient and escape to less contaminated areas. Two multi-compartmented exposure systems (the linear system and the HeMHAS-Heterogeneous Multi-Habitat Assay System) were used and then results were compared. Finally, it was aimed how sensitive the avoidance response is by comparing it with other endpoints through a sensitivity profile b

Concordant Changes in Gene Expression and Nucleotides Underlie Independent Adaptation to Hydrogen-Sulfide-Rich Environments.

The colonization of novel environments often involves changes in gene expression, protein coding sequence, or both. Studies of how populations adapt to novel conditions, however, often focus on only one of these two processes, potentially missing out on the relative importance of different parts of the evolutionary process. In this study, our objectives were 1) to better understand the qualitative concordance between conclusions drawn from analyses of differential expression and changes in genic sequence and 2) to quantitatively test whether differentially expressed genes were enriched for sit

Toxicological assessment of spinosad: Implications for integrated control of Aedes aegypti using larvicides and larvivorous fish.

Integration of larvivorous fish and biolarvicides at low concentrations to control of mosquito larvae in field situations may result in a safer and more effective tool. However, the usefulness of integrated approach depends upon survival and ecological fitness of fish employed. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the genotoxic effects of combining different sublethal concentrations of spinosad, a naturally occurring neurotoxic insecticide, with male adult poecilid larvivorous guppy (Poecilia reticulata) and platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) fish on Aedes larvae mosquitos. Both fish species

The effects of perceived mating opportunities on patterns of reproductive investment by male guppies.

Males pay considerable reproductive costs in acquiring mates (precopulatory sexual selection) and in producing ejaculates that are effective at fertilising eggs in the presence of competing ejaculates (postcopulatory sexual selection). Given these costs, males must balance their reproductive investment in a given mating to optimise their future reproductive potential. Males are therefore expected to invest in reproduction prudently according to the likelihood of obtaining future matings. In this study we tested this prediction by determining whether male reproductive investment varies with exp

Parasites of Trinidadian guppies: evidence for sex- and age-specific trait-mediated indirect effects of predators.

Predation pressure can alter the morphology, physiology, life history, and behavior of prey; each of these in turn can change how surviving prey interact with parasites. These trait-mediated indirect effects may change in direction or intensity during growth or, in sexually dimorphic species, between the sexes. The Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata presents a unique opportunity to examine these interactions; its behavioral ecology has been intensively studied in wild populations with well-characterized predator faunas. Predation pressure is known to have driven the evolution of many guppy
