Consistency Between Opioid-Related Mortality Trends Derived From Poison Center and National Vital Statistics System, United States, 2006-2016.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between poison center opioid exposure calls and National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) deaths. METHODS: We categorized Centers for Disease Control and Prevention NVSS mortality and the Researched Abuse, Diversion and Addiction-Related Surveillance System poison center program cases from 2006 to 2016 by International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, codes (heroin [T40.1]; natural or semisynthetic opioids [T40.2]; methadone [T40.3]; synthetic opioids, other than methadone [T40.4]). We scaled rates by 100 000 population and calculated Pearson

Classification tree methods for development of decision rules for botulism and cyanide poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Identification of predictors of potential mass poisonings may increase the speed and accuracy with which patients are recognized, potentially reducing the number ultimately exposed and the degree to which they are affected. This analysis used a decision-tree method to sort such potential predictors. METHODS: Data from the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System were used to select cyanide and botulism cases from 1993 to 2005 for analysis. Cases of other poisonings from a single poison center were used as controls. After duplication was omitted and removal of cases from the control sa

A comparison of the relative safety of phenylpropanolamine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin as measured by three compendia.

A comparison was made among phenylpropanolamine, aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen in terms of their relative safety, as measured by adverse reaction reports published since 1980, the five semiannual reports published by the Drug Abuse Warning Network during 1984-1986 and annual reports from Poison Control Centers from 1983-1986. On each of the three measures, phenylpropanolamine had the fewest reported adverse reactions.

An analysis of arsenic exposures referred to the Blodgett Regional Poison Center.

Fifty-seven cases of acute arsenic exposure were referred to Blodgett Regional Poison Center from January 1985 through December 1985. We will summarize epidemiologic aspects, laboratory values and the types of arsenicals involved. Cases predominantly involved children ingesting sodium arsenate in the form of ant poison. A great majority were accidental exposures related to the home use of ant killers in contrast to previous reports of homicidal or industrial poisoning. Initial urine arsenic levels, symptoms and therapy will be included. Most cases were reported within hours with patients being

Intox, detox, antidotes - Evidence based diagnosis and treatment of acute intoxications.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Aim of this review is to describe the role of clinical toxicology in the context of acute medicine. A special focus is put on antidotes and important aspects of diagnosis and therapy of acute intoxications. The data of the annual report of GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre is analyzed concerning the following aspects: what intoxications are relevant in acute medicine, are there special aspects in therapy, e.g. antidotes, and what antidotes are relevant? More over intoxication-related fatalities are analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In 2015 the poisons centre was consulted in 33,000

Monitoring trends in lacrimator exposures using the National Poison Data System: 2000-2021.

CONTEXT: Lacrimators are used by individuals for personal defense and by police for crowd control during periods of civil unrest. Increased public awareness about their use has raised concerns about their application and safety. OBJECTIVE: To characterize patterns of lacrimator exposures in the United States, we describe temporal trends of calls to poison centers by demographics, substances, medical outcomes, exposure sites, and scenarios. METHODS: A retrospective data analysis was performed for all single-substance lacrimator exposures in the United States reported to the National Poison Da

Exposure to ammonia solution due to substance use: a retrospective study from the French poison centres database (2009-2018).

INTRODUCTION: Ammonia solution (ammonium hydroxide) is used to convert cocaine hydrochloride to freebase cocaine. Due to its causticity, unintentional exposure to ammonia in a substance use context can result in injury. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of unintentional oral and buccal ammonia solution exposure in a substance use context. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using the French poison centres database over a 10-year period (2009-2018). RESULTS: A total of 1,546 files were extracted, and 263 substance users were included. There was a signifi

Risk of toxicity from pediatric topical salicylate ingestions.

INTRODUCTION: Suspected pediatric ingestions of greater than or equal to one teaspoon topical salicylate analgesic are recommended by poison control centers to be managed at healthcare facilities. This cutoff is applied for both liquid and non-liquid (cream, ointment, gel) formulations. METHODS: California poison control cases involving topical salicylate exposures in children less than 6-years-old who were evaluated at a health care facility between 2003 and 2018 were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 599 patient cases, the majority described no or minor symptoms, with gastrointestinal distress being t

Guideline on the use of ipecac syrup in the out-of-hospital management of ingested poisons.

The use of gastric emptying techniques, including ipecac-induced emesis, in the management of poisoned patients has declined significantly in recent years. Historically, poison centers used ipecac syrup in two ways. Ipecac syrup was administered to patients prior to referral to the emergency department in attempts to start the gastric emptying process as early as possible. Additionally, poison centers used ipecac syrup in attempts to keep patients from requiring referral to medical facilities. In these situations, ipecac syrup was administered in the home and poison center staff performed foll

The role of the poison center in veterinary poisonings: a survey.

The number of veterinary poisonings presented to this poison center has grown to over 1200 cases annually. To make sure that the poison center is working cooperatively with local veterinarians, a survey was sent out to 237 veterinary clinics state-wide. Of particular interest was whether the poison center had a role to play in the treatment of minor poisonings in companion animals. The results of 77 returned surveys indicate that the poison center is currently a major source of poison information and 95% of responders were satisfied with the information received; 73% felt that all minor ingest

Acute ethanol toxicity from ingesting mouthwash in children younger than 6-years of age.

The purpose of our study was to analyze reports of the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) of suspected overingestion of ethanol from mouthrinses by children younger than 6 years of age between 1989 and 1994. Annual incidence rates of reported ethanol exposures attributed to mouthrinses were calculated. Lethal and toxic amounts of several mouthrinses were calculated using peak blood ethanol concentrations of 500 and 50 mg per 100 mL, respectively. In 1994, there were 2937 calls reported by poison control centers related to ethanol-containing mouthrinses, an estimated inciden

The impact of an international initiative on exposures to liquid laundry detergent capsules reported to the United Kingdom National Poisons Information Service between 2008 and 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Although the majority of those exposed to liquid laundry detergent capsules remain asymptomatic or suffer only minor clinical features after exposure, a small proportion develop central nervous system depression, stridor, pulmonary aspiration and/or airway burns following ingestion or conjunctivitis and corneal ulceration following eye exposure. As a consequence, the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (AISE) established a Product Stewardship Programme in Europe, requiring that safety measures be implemented to reduce the visibility of, and re

Decline in pesticide poisonings in the United States from 1995 to 2004.

BACKGROUND: Trends in rates of unintentional pesticide illnesses and injuries by type were estimated for the United States from 1995 to 2004. METHODS: Poison Control Center data were examined for the years 1995 through 2004. Rates were calculated for pesticide type and selected pesticide classes based on estimated total United States population and proportion of population served. Pesticides as a proportion of poisonings to all substances over the years and vital statistics on deaths were examined to validate trends. RESULTS: Incidence rates of serious pesticide poisonings and injuries have

Comparison of incidence of hospital utilization for poisoning and other injury types.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the incidence of hospital utilization for injuries and compared poisoning with other forms of injury. Previous studies have suggested poison control centers reduce health-care costs by decreasing hospital utilization. METHODS: We conducted a one-year retrospective study involving patients treated for injuries at acute-care hospitals in Kentucky in 2008. We also compared inpatient discharges with discharges directly from the emergency department (ED) to determine hospitalization rates. The primary data sources were the Kentucky Hospital Billing database and the Kent
