Physiological Predictors of Mental Disorders Among Police Officers in Indonesia.

Police officers may be at a higher risk of suffering from mental disorders (MDs) compared with other occupations. This study aimed to examine the physiological predictors of MDs among police officers in Indonesia. The mental health status of each participant was examined using a standardized Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) tool and underwent several laboratory examinations including hematology, urine, serology, and electrocardiogram tests. A logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds ratio. Of the 4590 participants, 2.14% were diagnosed with MDs. The study found

Mental disorders, suicidal ideation, plans and attempts among Canadian police.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have demonstrated a significant prevalence of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal ideation, plans and attempts among Canadian public safety personnel, including police officers. What remains unknown is the relationship between mental disorders and suicide among sworn police officers, and the prevalence of both among civilian police workers. AIMS: To examine the relationship between suicidal ideation, plans and attempts and positive mental health screens for depression, anxiety, panic disorder, alcohol abuse a

Civilian Forensic Technician and Sworn Police Officer Job-Related Stress.

Forensic Technicians provide crime scene investigation services and are exposed to stressful violent crimes, motor vehicle accidents, biological or chemical hazards, and other appalling imagery. Forensic Technicians would likely experience physical and psychological stress after exposure to trauma, and security vulnerabilities similar to Sworn Police Officers. The perceived availability of mental health resources, job-related physical, psychological stress, and traumatic experiences of both Forensic Technicians and Sworn Police Officers from California law enforcement agencies were investigate

Influence of organizational stress on reported depressive symptoms among police.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of research on operational stress injuries (OSIs) among police officers and first responders. Most studies focus on operational stressors' contribution to OSI and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder. However, preliminary research shows that organizational stressors may uniquely contribute to OSI and depression, and thus should be examined more closely. AIMS: This study explored the influence of organizational stress on symptoms of depression in a sample of police officers from a large urban region. METHODS: Front-line (n = 109) police officer

Demographic and cognitive risk factors for police mental disorder symptoms.

The current study was designed to assess whether cognitive risk factors (i.e. anxiety sensitivity (AS), intolerance of uncertainty (IU)) explained variance in mental disorder symptoms in Canadian police officers beyond variance explained by demographic variables (i.e. sex, marital status, education, years of service). Police participants (708 men; 271 women) completed measures assessing posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, IU and AS. Multivariate analysis of variance demonstrated that only main effects

Engaging police to identify challenging school crossings and potential improvements.

This paper discusses the value of police officers as vital sources of information regarding pedestrian safety in their communities by presenting results from a survey of traffic safety police officers. The survey requested information on school crossings that the officers considered most challenging for pedestrians. Officers specified the intersections or mid-block locations with school crossings, and answered questions about elements of the locations, such as what makes the locations challenging, and what might be done to improve conditions at these locations. A key finding from the survey is

Police violence among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Police violence is a deleterious public health and criminal justice issue that disproportionately affects people who inject drugs (PWID). Studies documenting the prevalence and correlates of physical police violence in this population are rare. The aim of this study was to examine the correlates of past year physical police violence among an urban sample of PWID. METHODS: PWID participating in the 2015 wave of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in Baltimore City, Maryland, completed a socio-behavioral survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to detect

Police confrontations among street-involved youth in a Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: Street-level policing has been recognized as a driver of health-related harms among people who inject drugs (IDU). However, the extent of interaction between police and street-involved youth has not been well characterized. We examined the incidence and risk factors for police confrontations among street-involved youth in a Canadian setting. METHODS: Using data derived from participants enrolled in the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS) between 2005 and 2011, we assessed factors associated with being stopped, searched, or detained by police without arrest in the previous six months using

Belt use: comparison of NASS-CDS and police crash reports.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares belt use in police reports with NASS-CDS investigator-determined belt use. The NASS-CDS cases were analyzed by severity of occupant injury and the crash type. METHODS: 1993-2007 NASS-CDS was analyzed for occupant injury severity and crash type. Light vehicles were included with model year 1994+. Injury severity was subdivided by MAIS 0, 1-2, 3, 4+F, and fatal. Crash types were frontal, side, rear, and rollover. The NASS-CDS determination of belt use was assumed the gold standard used to determine miscoding by the police. RESULTS: The fraction of unbelted occupa

Blood pressure in firefighters, police officers, and other emergency responders.

Elevated blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Increased risk begins in the prehypertensive range and increases further with higher pressures. The strenuous duties of emergency responders (firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel) can interact with their personal risk profiles, including elevated blood pressure, to precipitate acute cardiovascular events. Approximately three-quarters of emergency responders have prehypertension or hypertension, a proportion which is expected to increase, based on the obesity epide

Prevalence and characteristics of alcohol-related incidents requiring police attendance.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of alcohol-related incidents attended by operational police within three of the largest cities in Queensland (i.e., Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Townsville; n=7,398). There have been only a relatively small proportion of Australian studies that have examined the prevalence and characteristics of alcohol-related incidents requiring police attention, and most are based on small sample sizes that are representative of specific populations. METHOD: Participants in the current study were first-response operational police officers who

"We fear the police, and the police fear us": structural and individual barriers and facilitators to HIV medication adherence among injection drug users in Kiev, Ukraine.

Ukraine has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemics in Europe, with an estimated 1.63% of the population living with HIV/AIDS in 2007. Injection drug use (IDU) remains the predominant mode of transmission in Kiev - the capital and largest city. Prior reports suggest that the HIV infection rate among IDUs in Kiev reaches 33%, and many have poor and inequitable access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Among those with access to HAART, little is understood about barriers and facilitators to HAART medication adherence. In May 2009, two semi-structured focus groups were conducted w

Effect of police interactions on those experiencing homelessness: A scoping review.

Considering instances of police brutality against people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and subsequent calls for changes to policing, it is important to understand how police and PEH interact. However, this literature in the US context has not been synthesized. This review aims to summarize: (a) the extent to which PEH have contact with police; and the (b) nature and (c) outcomes of these interactions. A PRISMA-aligned scoping review identified relevant scholarly articles on empirical studies published in a recent 20-year period in the United States. After screening, 26 relevant articles were

Identity categories and the dilemma of calling police about family violence.

The under-reporting of family violence is a global problem. Multiple barriers to help-seeking have been identified, including some associated with social identities like race, age and gender. This discursive psychology study examines identity and help-seeking in social interaction. We analysed 200 calls classified by police call-takers as family harm using conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis. We found that callers oriented to a locally generated identity category 'the one who called police' as problematic. Callers sought anonymity or proposed cover stories to avoid bei

A Study on the Prevalence of Occupational Stress Among Police Personnel in Delhi.

Introduction Occupational stress or stress at work is a real challenge for workers as well as organisations. Work-related stress can be caused by poor work organisation, poor work design, poor management, unsatisfactory working conditions, and lack of support from colleagues and supervisors. Police personnel work in such conditions that make them vulnerable to adverse physiological and psychological outcomes; however, this often goes underreported, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. The current study focused on two types of occupational stress, namely operational stress and organisational stres
