Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a common class of anthropogenic organobromine chemicals with fire-retardant properties and are extensively used in consumer products, such as electrical and electronic equipment, furniture, textiles, and foams. Due to their extensive use, PBDEs have wide eco-chemical dissemination and tend to bioaccumulate in wildlife and humans with many potential adverse health effects in humans, such as neurodevelopmental deficits, cancer, thyroid hormone disruption, dysfunction of reproductive system, and infertility. Many PBDEs have been listed as chemicals of in

The migration and transformation of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), DechloranePlus (DP), and cadmium in soil-rice system was investigated, and the influence on the quality of two varieties of rice was studied. The degradation half-lives of TBBPA, BBPAs, syn-DP, and anti-DP were 23.18 ~ 26.36 days, 30.14 ~ 36.10 days, 72.96-81.55 days, and 169.06-198.04 days in the soil. TBBPA was gradually degraded to tri-BBPA, di-BBPA, mono-BBPA, and bisphenol A by the debromination. TBBPA and its bromide metabolites could be bioaccumulated in different tissues of rice; mono-BBPA and bisphenol A was easy to ac

Neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and other cognitive impairments, affect millions of children worldwide, and some diagnoses seem to be increasing in frequency. Industrial chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for this rise in prevalence. In 2006, we did a systematic review and identified five industrial chemicals as developmental neurotoxicants: lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic, and toluene. Since 2006, epidemiological studies have documented six additional developmental

Various brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and current-use, non-PBDE BFRs, as well as organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were measured in winter flounder, harp and hooded seals, and North Atlantic right whales from the Eastern United States and Canada. The concentrations of PBDEs in winter flounder and right whales were similar in magnitude to the levels of PCBs, which was unlike the pattern observed in seals. In these marine mammals, the levels of PBDEs were orders of magnitude lower than the levels of OCs and

Apoptotic cell death is one of the main consequences of exposure to brominated flame retardants, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers. However, few of these compounds have had their potential toxicity investigated. BDE-154 is one of the most poorly studied polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners, but its level in the environment and in biological fluids is rising. In addition, its chemical structure differs from the other congeners with well-documented toxicity, so BDE-154 may display a distinct toxicity pattern. This study has evaluated how BDE-154 affects the human hepatoblastoma

Environmental factors are determinant for the appearance of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) in susceptible subjects. Increased iodine intake, selenium, and vitamin D deficiency, exposure to radiation, from nuclear fallout or due to medical radiation, are environmental factors increasing AITD. Cigarette smoking is associated with Graves' disease and Graves' ophthalmopathy, while it decreases the risk of hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity. Viral infections are important environmental factors in the pathogenesis of AITD, too, particularly human parvovirus B19 (EVB19) and hepatitis C virus

We successfully optimized an analytical method using gel permeation chromatography followed by direct sample introduction comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry to quantify multiple groups of targeted persistent organic pollutants and halogenated natural products (HNPs) simultaneously in fish oil samples. This new method has a wider analytical scope than the traditional approach to use multiple methods to cover each class of compounds. Our analysis revealed that the relatively more volatile and lighter organic compounds, such as polychlorinated b

The immune system is able to recognize and neutralize potentially harmful agents, conferring to the organism resistance to infectious and malignant diseases. The authors have reviewed the literature and identified a group of substances able to enhance and/or reduce different immune functions, both in an experimental model and in occupational and environmental human exposure. The group includes several polyhalogenated hydrocarbons, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated biphenyls, tetrachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), some metals like lead, cadmium and mercury, pesticides, i.e. d

Metal-organic frame (MOF) materials can effectively degrade organic pollutants, whereas the MOF is rapidly hydrolysed in water and has poor stability and low reusability. However, in the current advanced oxidation process (AOP) system, the removal effect of pollutants under alkaline condition is not ideal. In this study, a magnetic composite material derived from MOF was synthesised and used as a new catalyst for rapid degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Compared to precarbonisation, FeCo@GC formed a conductive graphite carbon skeleton, retained the complete rhombododecahedron struct

Thyroid-hormone-disrupting chemicals are increasingly attracting attention because of their potential harmful effects on animal health, including on fishes. Here, we investigated the effects of exposure to the thyroid-hormone-disrupting chemicals 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) on swim bladder inflation, eye development, growth, swimming performance, and the expression of thyroid-related genes in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). PTU exposure resulted in reductions in eye size, growth, and swim bladder inflation, and these effects led to poorer swimming performan

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) are the typical representative pollutants of brominated flame retardants and heavy metals found in the air of e-waste recycling workshops. However, their metabolic kinetics through mixture inhalation is unknown. In the present study, 8-week old Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) male mice were whole-body exposed to TBBPA and CdCl2 mixtures by inhalation. Tissue samples were collected for TBBPA and cadmium (Cd) analysis at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks during exposure and at 4 and 8 weeks after the completion of the 8-week exposure period. TBBPA

Estrogen-like endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDC) are exogenous, man-made chemicals that alter the functions of the endocrine system and cause various health defects by interfering with the synthesis, metabolism, binding or cellular responses of natural estrogens. EEDCs have been found in various plastic products, flame retardants, pesticides and many other products that are needed for daily use. Some of the greatest effects of EEDCs are on puberty, a period of rapid physiological changes like growth spurt, maturation of the gonads and the brain. Estrogen, one of the key hormones required in

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), the most widely used brominated flame retardant, is reported to potentially possess risks in inducing obesity or obesity-related metabolic diseases. Considering the increasing environmental contamination of TBBPA analogues and their high structural similarities to the parent compound, whether they could influence adipogenesis or not remains to be elucidated. In this study, two of the most prevalent TBBPA derivatives [i.e., TBBPA bis(allyl ether) (TBBPA-BAE) and TBBPA bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-BDBPE)] and their byproducts [i.e., TBBPA mono(allyl ether) (
