BACKGROUND: BK virus (BKV) belongs to the human Polyomaviridae and the primary BKV infection is occurred during childhood then the virus could be latent through life, especially in the kidneys and urinary system. It became reactive after an immunocompromised status, such as pregnancy or transplantation. Isolated BKV from different locations of the world is grouped into four subtypes using serological and genotyping methods. The BKV subtype I is the dominant one and has worldwide distribution.

In the province of Voyvodina 18 cases of post-vaccinal encephalitis have been recorded, three of which were fatal.The estimated morbidity rate was 0.6 per 10(5) after revaccination, and 3.9 per 10(5) after primary vaccination. The virological studies described, as well as other findings referred to in this report, are consistent with the possibility of an autoimmune aetiology of the post-vaccinal encephalitis cases observed.

Virions were extracted directly from the brain of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). They were treated with antiserum to SV40, with rabbit antiserum to previous PML isolates, or with serum from another patient with the same disease and observed directly by electron microscopy. Evidence is accumulating to show that a number of viruses have the ability to adapt to man's defense mechanisms and survive in a latent state for what appears to be the life of the human host. Unfortunately, latent viral presence, which may appear clinically benign initally, may manifest itself later as severe and often fatal disease. Some members of the herpes virus family have latent potential and are discussed in detail. Clinical competence would suggest a thorough understanding of these late manifestations of occult viral presence.

Two types of intranuclear inclusions were described in a brain biopsy from a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The first type of intranculear inclusion was papova virus-like and was observed within 20% of the nuclei of all astrocytes and neurons examined.
