Biodegradation Mechanism of Polystyrene by Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) and Nutrients Influencing Their Growth.

A degradation mechanism of polystyrene (PS) in mealworms reared on expanded PS (EPS) was investigated by its decrease in molecular weight and change in chemical structure. A 33% decrease in molecular weight was observed for the digested PS in the frass after 1 week of feeding to mealworms. The FT-IR and py-GC/MS spectra of the digested PS showed radical oxidative reactions taking place in the mealworm body. The presence of hydroperoxide, alcohol and phenol groups was confirmed, and dimer fragments of styrene with quinone and phenol groups were obtained. The decrease in molecular weight and the

Upcycling of Polystyrene to Aromatic Polyacids by Tandem Friedel-Crafts and Oxidation Reactions.

Due to the high demand and the increasing production rate of plastic materials, vast amounts of wastes are generated every year. An important fraction of these wastes contain polystyrene (PS), which is seldom recycled, neither mechanically nor chemically. While several chemical recycling strategies have been developed, they are either very energy-demanding or produce chemicals that can hardly be employed in the synthesis of plastics (e.g., benzene and benzoic acid). Here, we report the upcycling of PS waste into aromatic polyacids, useful in polyester synthesis, such as polyethylene terephthal

Chronic exposure to polystyrene microplastics induces renal fibrosis via ferroptosis.

With the increasing prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, human health has become a growing concern. After entering the human body, MPs accumulate in the kidneys, indicating that the kidneys are their major target organs. This study investigated nephrotoxicity associated with MPs, with a specific focus on polystyrene (PS) MPs and amino-functionalized polystyrene (PS-NH2) MPs. Although previous studies have documented the nephrotoxic effects associated with short-term exposure to MPs, the mechanisms of kidney toxicity caused by chronic long-term exposure to MPs remain largely un

Influence of Mixed Solvent in the Morphology and Hydrophobicity of Electrospun Polystyrene Porous Fibers.

Electrospun polystyrene (PS) fibers are produced using a mixed solvent of chloroform and n,n-dimethylformamide (DMF) to investigate the influence of the solvent ratio on the fiber surface morphology and contact angle of the obtained mats. Electrospinning is a simple processing technique for producing fibers with diameters in the range of nanometers to a few micrometers. When using the different solvent ratios for this process, porous PS membranes are created due to nonsolvent and thermally induced phase separation (N-TIPS). The morphology of the fibers is analyzed through scanning electron mic

The combined effects of polystyrene of different sizes and cadmium in mouse kidney tissues.

Environmental accumulation of nano- and microplastics pose serious risks to human health. Polystyrene (PS) is a polymer commonly used in the production of plastics. However, PS can adsorb cadmium (Cd), thereby influencing bioavailability and toxicity in vivo. Moreover, PS and Cd can accumulate in the mammalian kidney. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the effects of combined exposure to PS and Cd in the kidney. Kidney damage was evaluated in male mice gavaged with PS (diameter, 100 nm and/or 1 μm) and Cd for 25 days. The results showed that PS at 100 nm caused more severe ox

Polystyrene Microplastics Exacerbate Candida albicans Infection Ability In Vitro and In Vivo.

Plastic pollution is an important environmental problem, and microplastics have been shown to have harmful effects on human and animal health, affecting immune and metabolic physiological functions. Further, microplastics can interfere with commensal microorganisms and exert deleterious effects on exposure to pathogens. Here, we compared the effects of 1 µm diameter polystyrene microplastic (PSMPs) on Candida albicans infection in both in vitro and in vivo models by using HT29 cells and Galleria mellonella larvae, respectively. The results demonstrated that PSMPs could promote Candida infectio

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce developmental impairments and vasotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The exponential use of plastics has significantly increased environmental pollution by nanoplastics (NPs). In the aquatic environment, NPs interact and bioaccumulate in the biota, posing a potential ecotoxicological risk. The present study investigated the developmental toxicity, vasotoxicity, cytotoxicity, ROS induction, and behavioral impairments in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to environmentally relevant polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) concentrations (0.04, 34 ng L-1, and 34 μg L-1) for 144 h through multiple biomarkers response (mortality, frequency of spontaneous contractions, heart rate, and

Porous polymer film formation by water droplet templating using polystyrene.

Studies show that the formation of breath figures over polystyrene is not clearly understood-sometimes the patterns are regular and sometimes they are barely formed. In an attempt to understand this process a little more, breath figures over polystyrene of three molecular weights and on the smooth and grooved DVD surfaces are prepared and studied. The microporous films are prepared by the evaporation of the chloroform solution of the polymers in a humid environment. The thus formed breath figure patterns are studied under a confocal laser scanning microscope and the images are analyzed. Breath

Combinational exposure to hydroxyatrazine increases neurotoxicity of polystyrene nanoparticles on Caenorhabditis elegans.

Using Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model, we investigated combinational effect between 2-hydroxyatrazine (HA) and polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NP) on function and development of D-type motor neurons. Exposure to HA (10 and 100 μg/L) alone caused decreases in body bend, head thrash, and forward turn and increase in backward turn. Exposure to 100 μg/L HA also caused neurodegeneration of D-type motor neurons. Moreover, combinational exposure to HA (0.1 and 1 μg/L) induced enhancement in PS-NP (10 μg/L) toxicity in inhibiting body bend, head thrash, and forward turn, and in increasing backw

Exposure to polystyrene microplastics impairs hippocampus-dependent learning and memory in mice.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has become a serious environmental issue worldwide, but its potential effects on health remain unknown. The administration of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) to mice for eight weeks impaired learning and memory behavior. PS-MPs were detected in the brain especially in the hippocampus of these mice. Concurrently, the hippocampus had decreased levels of immediate-early genes, aberrantly enhanced synaptic glutamate AMPA receptors, and elevated neuroinflammation, all of which are critical for synaptic plasticity and memory. Interestingly, ablation of the vagus nerve, a modul

Preparation of Functionalized Magnetic Polystyrene Microspheres and Their Application in Food Safety Detection.

Based on the specific binding of sulfonic acid groups to melamine, β-agonists and other compounds, Fe3O4 nano-magnetic beads were coated with polystyrene using an improved micro-suspension emulsion polymerization method, thus forming core-shell magnetic polystyrene microspheres (Fe3O4@PS) with Fe3O4 as the core and polystyrene as the shell. These functionalized microspheres, which can be used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent, were prepared after further sulfonation. These microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron mic

Polystyrene foam as a source and sink of chemicals in the marine environment: An XRF study.

Polystyrene foam (expanded and extruded polystyrene: EPS and XPS, respectively) is a ubiquitous and pervasive type of marine plastic whose physical properties, transport and fate are distinctly different to those of other common (unfoamed) types of thermoplastic litter. In this study, a range of fragments of EPS and XPS retrieved from three beaches in southwest England have been characterised by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry in order to examine the chemical makeup and potential biological and geochemical impacts and interactions of this type of plastic waste. Analyses

Does the composition of polystyrene trays affect Candida spp. biofilm formation?

The biofilm formation ability of Candida species seems to have a role in the prognosis of patients with candidemia. Biofilm formation is usually tested using 96 well flat bottom polystyrene microtiter plates, although the type of plastic used is not commonly reported. This study compares biofilm formation by Candida spp. on six types of plates from three brands (three non-tissue-treated and three tissue-treated). Thirty isolates of each of the following species were selected: C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, as well as 15 isolates of C. krusei (n = 135 isolates) from p

Acute and chronic effects of polystyrene microplastics on juvenile and adult Daphnia magna.

We investigate the distribution and effects of polystyrene microplastic (MP) particles in exposure experiments with the ecotoxicology model organism Daphnia magna. The aim was to investigate the short and long-term toxicity of MP at different concentrations. To achieve this goal, the effects of 6 μm commercially available polystyrene beads on two different life-stages of D. magna: < 24 h old juveniles and 9 days old adults was assessed. The following end points in test animals were measured: (1) survival, (2) growth, (3) individual and population fecundity, (4) age at maturation and (5) body s

Cecum perforation associated with a calcium polystyrene sulfonate bezoar - a rare entity.

Hyperkalemia is one of the most common electrolyte disorders, responsible for a high number of adverse outcomes, including life-threatening arrhythmias. Potassium binders are largely prescribed drugs used for hyperkalemia treatment but unfortunately, there are many adverse events associated with its use, mostly gastrointestinal. Identification of patients at highest risk for the serious complications associated with the current potassium binders, such as colon necrosis and perforation, could prevent fatal outcomes. The authors present a case of a 56-year-old man with secondary diabetes and chr

Colitis induced by sodium polystyrene sulfonate in sorbitol: A report of six cases.

Drug-related injury has been noted in virtually all organ systems, and recognition of the patterns of injury associated with medication enables modification of treatment and reduces the morbidity associated with the side effects of drugs. With the large number of new drugs being developed, documentation of the morphology of the changes seen as an adverse effect becomes important to characterize the pattern of injury. The pathologist is often the first to identify these abnormalities and correlate them with a particular drug. Kayexalate or sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS), a linear polymer de

Delineating fibronectin bioadhesive micropatterns by photochemical immobilization of polystyrene and poly(vinylpyrrolidone).

Bioadhesive micropatterns, capable of laterally confining cells to a 2D lattice, have proven effective in simulating the in vivo tissue environment. They reveal fundamental aspects of the role of adhesion in cell mechanics, proliferation, and differentiation. Here we present an approach based on photochemistry for the fabrication of synthetic polymer micropatterns. Perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA), upon deep-UV exposure, forms a reactive nitrene capable of covalently linking to a molecule that is in close proximity. PFPA has been grafted onto a backbone of poly(allyl amine), which readily forms a

Eradication of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by photosensitizers immobilized in polystyrene.

Immobilization of photosensitizers in polymers opens prospects for their continuous and reusable application. Methylene blue (MB) and Rose Bengal were immobilized in polystyrene by mixing solutions of the photosensitizers in chloroform with a polymer solution, followed by air evaporation of the solvent. This procedure yielded 15-140 μm polymer films with a porous surface structure. The method chosen for immobilization ensured 99% enclosure of the photosensitizer in the polymer. The antimicrobial activity of the immobilized photosensitizers was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bac

Polystyrene nanoparticles activate ion transport in human airway epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, nanotechnology has provided researchers with new nanometer materials, such as nanoparticles, which have the potential to provide new therapies for many lung diseases. In this study, we investigated the acute effects of polystyrene nanoparticles on epithelial ion channel function. METHODS: Human submucosal Calu-3 cells that express cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and baby hamster kidney cells engineered to express the wild-type CFTR gene were used to investigate the actions of negatively charged 20 nm polystyrene nanoparticles on sho
