The impact of delayed maternity on foetal growth in Spain: An assessment by population attributable fraction.

BACKGROUND: Delayed childbearing is considered a risk factor for maternal-foetal health. As in other higher-income countries, in Spain age at maternity has steadily increased during the last two decades. AIM: To quantify the impact of the delay in the age at maternity on small for gestational age (SGA) categories of <3rd, 3rd-5th and 5th-10th percentiles. METHODS: 2,672,350 singleton live births born to Spanish mothers in 2007-2015 were analysed. Adjusted relative risk was calculated to estimate the adjusted partial population attributable fractions (PAFp) for mothers aged 35-39 and ≥40 year

Fracture and Growth Are Competing Forces Determining the Fate of Conformers in Tau Fibril Populations.

Tau fibrils are pathological aggregates that can transfer between neurons and then recruit soluble Tau monomers by template-assisted conversion. The propagation of different fibril polymorphs is thought to be a contributing factor to phenotypic diversity in Alzheimer disease and other Tauopathies. We found that a homogeneous population of Tau fibrils composed of the truncated version K18 (residues 244-372) gradually converted to a new set of fibril conformers when subjected to multiple cycles of seeding and growth. Using double electron-electron resonance (DEER) spectroscopy, we observed that

Epidemiology of male and female reproductive disorders and impact on fertility regulation and population growth.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has conducted a series of vision workshops to set an ambitious but tenable broad agenda, transcending traditional organizational and disciplinary boundaries. This presentation sets forth a vision regarding how the aspects of a woman's reproductive lifespan are interrelated, likely starting from childhood all the way to the later reproductive years. As a woman propagates, this circular interaction is then transmitted to the next generation. We need an understanding of the clinical processes, the time course, the natural history, and d

Fetal growth and onset of delivery: a nationwide population-based study of preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to assess whether deviations from normal fetal growth are associated with spontaneous preterm delivery. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based study was performed, using Swedish Medical Birth Register data from 1991 through 2001. The total population comprised 1,007,648 singleton births. Intrauterine-derived growth standards were used to identify individual standard deviation (SD) from expected birth weight. Spontaneous preterm infants were compared with infants born after spontaneous labor at term. Results were obtained by using multiple logistic regression ana

Identification and characterization of a heterogeneous population of growth hormone receptors in mouse hepatic membranes.

Covalent cross-linking of radiolabeled mouse growth hormone (125I-mGH) with the homobifunctional cross-linking agent bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate (BS3) to microsomal membranes prepared from late pregnant mouse liver resulted in the labeling of three specific mGH binding proteins (receptors) with apparent Mr = 125,000, 62,000, and 56,000, as measured by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions. These same three specifically labeled proteins were present, but with slightly lower apparent molecular weights, when samples were electrophoresed in the abse

A quantitative study on growth and cell population identification in murine salivary gland culture.

Differentiation of neonatal salivary gland cell populations was studied in vitro using primary explant cultures. Growth on glass of the submandibular, sublingual and parotid salivary glands was optimal if the initial explant diameter was less than 0.4 mm and culture was in 199 medium plus 20 per cent newborn-calf serum. Growth was measured by planimetry of the area of cellular outgrowth as a monolayer with continuous cell contacts. Duct epithelial cells identified using ultrastructural, histochemical and immunological criteria, produced evidence of altered morphology by in-vitro conditions. Pr

Insulin-like growth factor-I in growth hormone-deficient adults: relationship to population-based normal values, body composition and insulin tolerance test.

BACKGROUND: Although an insulin tolerance test (ITT) is the most commonly used method for detecting growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) in adults, measurements of serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) may also be of value. OBJECTIVE: To validate the use of serum IGF-I concentration in the diagnosis of GHD in adults. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: One hundred and four patients, 60 men and 44 women, with known pituitary disease and verified GHD based on ITT. MEASUREMENTS: Serum IGF-I was determined by radioimmunoassay after acid-ethanol extraction. Body composition was esti

Single cell analysis of Idh mutant growth plates identifies cell populations responsible for longitudinal bone growth and enchondroma formation.

Enchondromas are a common tumor in bone that can occur as multiple lesions in enchondromatosis, which is associated with deformity of the affected bone. These lesions harbor somatic mutations in IDH and driving expression of a mutant Idh1 in Col2 expressing cells in mice causes an enchondromatosis phenotype. Here we compared growth plates from E18.5 mice expressing a mutant Idh1 with control littermates using single cell RNA sequencing. Data from Col2 expressing cells were analysed using UMAP and RNA pseudo-time analyses. A unique cluster of cells was identified in the mutant growth plates tha

Anchorage-independent and faster growth in clonal population from UV-irradiated NER-deficient cells.

Human tumours are characterized by both molecular and functional heterogeneity, which drives cancer cell growth. In this context, the selection of subclones that acquire enhanced proliferative capacity and resistance to pharmacological treatments represents a necessary step in tumour progression. In the presence of DNA damage, efficient signalling and lesion removal are crucial in preventing the accumulation of genomic mutations. In Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) pathways, the loss of interaction between DDB2 and PCNA (referred to as DDB2PCNA-) results in genomic instability, delayed damage

Examining perceptions of rapid population growth in North and South Gondar zones, northwest Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in Africa and ranks second only to Nigeria. Rapid population growth has hampered the country's development, making the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger difficult. This study which had two components--quantitative and qualitative--was aimed at exploring the perceptions of women and other social groups on the prevailing population pressures. The quantitative study involved 3,512 women aged 15-49 years. The qualitative study consisted of five focus-group discussions and six key-informant interviews. Over 90% of women (n = 3,512) who particip

Transforming growth factor alpha polymorphism and cleft lip and palate in North Indian Population.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common congenital malformations, with widespread racial and regional variation, is an orofacial cleft. Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are a congenital anomaly that results in incomplete or non-fusion of the lip and/or palate during the embryonic development of the child. Many studies support that the occurrence of CLP is attributed to a combination of factors of environment and genes. Earlier studies had studied many candidate genes for CLP in different populations but not all are significant to every population. Transforming growth factor alpha (TGFA) genes had been

Population Growth of Three Stored Product Beetle Species on Alphitobius diaperinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Meals.

The lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is an important pest of stored products and at the same time a species with great potential as food and feed that has recently attracted increasing interest as nutrient source. Future predictions show a massive increase of insect meals' production in the near future, therefore, as expected in the case of other durable stored products, insect meals may get infested by insects during their storage. In this context and as a continuance of our previous study on the susceptibility of meal of the yellow mealworm, Teneb

Growth of bone marrow and skeletal muscle side population stem cells in suspension culture.

The ability to efficiently isolate and expand various stem cell populations in vitro is crucial for successful translation of cell-based therapies to the clinical setting. One such heterogeneous population that possesses a remarkable potential for the development of cell-based treatments for a variety of degenerative diseases and disorders is called the Side Population (SP). For many years, investigators have isolated these primitive cells based upon their ability to efflux the fluorophore Hoechst 33342. This attribute enabled separation of SP cells derived from multiple tissue sources from ot

Morbidity, rickets and long-bone growth in post-medieval Britain--a cross-population analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency rickets is associated with skeletal deformities including swollen rib junctions, bowing of the legs, and the flaring and fraying of the wrist and long-bone metaphyses. There is, however, scarce information on the direct effect of rickets on skeletal growth in either present or past populations. AIM: The study investigated the effect of vitamin D deficiency rickets on long-bone growth in two post-medieval skeletal populations from East London (Broadgate and Christ Church Spitalfields). Subsequently, inter-population growth variations in relation to non-specific

Side-Population Trophoblasts Exhibit the Differentiation Potential of a Trophoblast Stem Cell Population, Persist to Term, and are Reduced in Fetal Growth Restriction.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction often results from poor placental function and is a major cause of stillbirth. Clinically, fetal growth restriction is difficult to diagnose and currently has no effective treatment. Trophoblasts are unique placental cells that form the feto-maternal interface and facilitate nutrient and gas exchange. Fetal growth restriction is linked to inadequate trophoblast function. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this dysfunction are poor, in part because of our inability to isolate and study the trophoblast stem cells from which mature trophob
