Successful use of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway to improve outcomes following the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum.

PURPOSE: Pectus excavatum is a common chest wall deformity amenable to surgical correction, most commonly by a technique known as the Nuss Procedure. The surgery is associated with significant postoperative pain and lengthy hospital stays. We hypothesized that a standardized enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway would result in significantly reduced length of stay (LOS) and reduced levels of postoperative pain without an increase in readmissions or emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: We instituted a pectus excavatum ERAS program at a high-volume academic center. Our ERAS proto

Effectiveness of electrical stimulation for postoperative rehabilitation of lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is considered the primary treatment for lung cancer, but postoperative complications and functional limitations lead to longer recovery and hospitalization times. Although electrical stimulation (ES) is considered a promising intervention for overcoming these challenges, existing research findings on ES have limitations due to small sample sizes and incomplete outcome measurements. This systematic review aims to evaluate ES on five important aspects: postoperative pain, complications, exercise capacity, length of stay, and respiratory functions. METHODS: Databases searched

Implementation of a Robotic Hand Glove in the Physiotherapy Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Secondary to Volar Barton Fracture: A Case Report.

A volar Barton fracture is a compression injury that usually results from a fall onto an outstretched, pronated wrist. It is characterized by an intraarticular marginal volar shearing fracture of the distal radius. Despite the prevalence of distal radius fractures, consensus regarding optimal treatment remains challenging. To achieve adequate alignment, a variety of treatment techniques are available, including open reduction with plate and screw fixation, external fixation, and closed reduction with pinning. Regardless of the method of treatment, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most preva

Rehago - A Home-Based Training App Using Virtual Reality to Improve Functional Performance of Stroke Patients with Mirror Therapy and Gamification Concept: A Pilot Study.

Stroke is one of the prevalent diseases which leads to functional disabilities such as hemiparesis or hemiplegia. It is common practice to treat patients with proper rehabilitation as early as possible for better prognosis after the onset of stroke. One of the effective therapeutic techniques for treating stroke patients is mirror therapy, which can potentially facilitate patients' motor function recovery through repetitive practice. "Rehago" is a software as medical device that implements the concept of mirror therapy in combination with gamified exercises into virtual reality (VR) to provide

Laterally applied single bone plate option for fixation of complete diaphyseal fracture of a third metatarsal bone in a circus work pony.

BACKGROUND: Complete fractures of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bones (Mc/t3) are not common, but can occur in various situations and all types of horses, contributing for approximately one third of all long bone fractures in the horse, mostly related to external trauma or to high energy injuries. To stabilize Mc/t3 fractures in the horse, conservative management with walking casts and/or open reduction and internal fixation techniques are referred in the scientific literature, these last one generally by double platting application to bone surface in 90 degrees. In the present case will be

A Comparative Analysis of 2D and 3D Tasks for Virtual Reality Therapies Based on Robotic-Assisted Neurorehabilitation for Post-stroke Patients.

Post-stroke neurorehabilitation based on virtual therapies are performed completing repetitive exercises shown in visual electronic devices, whose content represents imaginary or daily life tasks. Currently, there are two ways of visualization of these task. 3D virtual environments are used to get a three dimensional space that represents the real world with a high level of detail, whose realism is determinated by the resolucion and fidelity of the objects of the task. Furthermore, 2D virtual environments are used to represent the tasks with a low degree of realism using techniques of bidimens

Diastolic dysfunction: assessment and implications on the single ventricle circulation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with a functionally single ventricle (SV) are palliated with a series of procedures leading to a Fontan circulation. Over the life span, a substantial proportion of SV patients develop heart failure that can arise from circulatory or ventricular failure. Diastolic dysfunction (DD) is an important determinant of adverse outcomes in SV patients. However, assessment and categorization of DD in the SV remains elusive. We review recent literature and developments in assessment of DD in the SV and its relation to clinical outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: DD is prevalent in the

Immediate Effects of Pre-bronchoscopy Pulmonary Physiotherapy on Post-procedure Pulmonary Function in Individuals Undergoing Bronchoscopy.

Introduction Pulmonary function plays an essential role in procedural safety and respiratory stability. Flexible bronchoscopy is an important diagnostic and therapeutic procedure; however, procedure-related complications, including hypoxemia, oxygen desaturation, bronchospasm, and laryngeal spasm, may impair pulmonary function and post-procedure recovery. Breathing exercises may improve respiratory performance by enhancing breathing mechanics and strengthening respiratory muscle function. However, evidence regarding the role of pre-bronchoscopy pulmonary physiotherapy remains limited. Methods

The Prevalence of Massage Therapy Utilization for Musculoskeletal Conditions: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Dissociation is a transdiagnostic phenomenon common among trauma survivors. Key characteristics include depersonalization, derealization, absorption, and amnesia. Chronic dissociation is correlated with autonomic nervous system hypoarousal and other neurophysiological adaptations that impact survivors' ability to make gains in conventional psychotherapy. Therapeutic massage has demonstrated stimulatory effects on cortical regions that exhibit functional dysregulation in dissociation and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This case study explored whether therapeutic massage an
