INTRODUCTION: Although uncommon, incomplete capsulotomy, anterior capsule tags and anterior capsule tears are still encountered during femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), resulting in surgical complications. This highlights the need to improve femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy technique to reduce capsulotomy-related complications. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a newly developed, modified technique of setting capsulotomy irradiation thickness in lowering the incidence of capsulotomy-related complications in FLACS.
METHODS: This op

In a retrospective study, we reviewed 218 consecutive Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomies performed at the Gimbel Eye Centre between June 1987 and November 1989 for the incidence of retinal detachment (RD) following treatment. Matched controls were found for 198 YAG cases. The median post-surgical follow-up for the YAG cases was 49.5 months; for the controls, 50.0 months. The median time between cataract extraction and YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was 24.8 months. The median follow-up after YAG was 24.2 months. Two of the 198 YAG cases (1.0%) and one of the 198 controls (0.5%) had RD. In t

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsular clarity is important for long-term visual gain. Postoperative visual acuity could be reduced due to posterior capsular or intraocular lens opacification, which occur months or years after cataract surgery. We report early occurrence of posterior capsular calcification without opacification of intraocular lens.
CASE: We report the case of a 78-year-old male who had undergone phacoemulsification with implantation of hydrophilic intraocular lens (IOL) in the left eye for cataract. The patient was non-diabetic, and the surgical procedure was uneventful. On the third

Posterior capsular opacification, also known as after cataract develops in 33 % of patients after uneventful cataract surgery. Nd-YAG Laser capsulotomy is the treatment of choice for PCO and is routinely performed by the general ophthalmologist on an OPD basis. Endophthalmitis, although a rare complication after Nd-YAG Laser capsulotomy, has been reported in the literature. We report a case of Propionibacterium acnes endophthalmitis following laser capsulotomy and the possible mechanism of its occurrence.

In this study, we described and discussed the late onset spontaneous posterior capsule rupture with intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation years after uncomplicated cataract surgery and implantation of hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. Eight patients presented with spontaneous posterior capsule rupture and IOL dislocation 5-20 years after uncomplicated phacoemulsification and IOL (AcrySof, Alcon, US) implantation. None of the patients had undergone posterior capsulotomy in the past. Four of the patients admitted habitual eye rubbing. An intact and well-centered continuous curvilinear capsulotomy edge was

A patient with bilateral aniridia and progressive congenital cataract was treated at the age of 7 years through phacoaspiration with femtosecond laser capsulotomy, in-the-bag intraocular lens implantation, and pars plana vitrectomy (combined with posterior capsulotomy). The diameter of the planned anterior capsulotomy was 4.7 mm; however, due to elevated tension in the young capsular bag, the capsulotomy diameter increased (to around 6 mm) shortly after release of the tension by the laser. In addition, the patient had a very flat and small cornea, causing the formation of air bubbles in the cu

Neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is commonly used to treat posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery in adults. Children and adults with developmental delay, however, are not always cooperative, and the procedure must be performed under general anesthesia. We describe a technique for Nd:YAG capsulotomy under general anesthesia in the sitting position using the standard widely available Nd:YAG laser. Anesthesia was induced in the supine position and the patient was then transferred to the sitting position with chin in the slit-lamp laser delivery system.

The authors report on the neodymium-YAG laser used after extracapsular cataract extraction with the implantation of a posterior chamber lens in 1726 patients. The most common indication was capsular fibrosis necessitating posterior capsulotomy. The alternative to the YAG laser would be a bulbus-opening procedure via pars plana using a Sato knife. The advantage of the YAG laser in comparison with capsulotomy with a Sato knife is that there is no danger of intraocular infection or bleeding (which may result from tension on the fibers with the first method). A disadvantage of the YAG laser method

BACKGROUND: Patients that have a hydrophilic intraocular lens (IOL) inserted during cataract surgery are more likely to develop posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and require YAG laser posterior capsulotomy than those with hydrophobic IOLs. This study aimed to examine the cost implications of hydrophilic and hydrophobic IOL usage in NHS-funded cataract services in England and estimate the cost saving of increased hydrophobic IOL usage.
METHODS: The cost of IOLs and YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was determined using NHS Spend Comparison Service data and Payment by Results tariffs. Data f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical technique and outcome of pars plana capsulotomy and vitrectomy with infusion through the limbus to remove the posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in children with pseudophakic eyes.
METHODS: This technique was performed in 51 cases (57 eyes) of complicated PCO with pseudophakic eyes, which was almost impossible to remove through the Nd:YAG capsulotomy. Pre- and post-operative visual acuity, intraocular pressure, density of cornea endothelium and complications during and after the operation were observed. The mean follow up time was 30 months.
