Utilization of Postnatal Care Services among Thai Women during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Results of a Web-Based Survey.

The postnatal period is an underserved aspect of maternity care, potentially worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to identify postnatal care (PNC) use by health personnel within the 42 days of childbirth among postpartum mothers in Thailand. This web-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from July to October 2021 (n = 840). Multiple binary and ordinal logistic regressions were conducted to predict three outcome variables (≥2 times, ≥3 times, or level of PNC use). Women who received PNC were in low numbers (≥2: 30.7% and (≥3: 12.9%), while 54.4% of women reported no barriers

Association between antenatal care utilization, preeclampsia, and neonatal Apgar scores among postnatal women in Eswatini: an analytical cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that occurs during pregnancy significantly associated with maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is associated with complications for both mothers and babies although 10 - 20% may be prevented through proper antenatal care (ANC) utilization. In Eswatini, despite high ANC coverage, there has been an increase in maternal and neonatal deaths with limited evidence of the associated factors. Therefore, this study examined the utilization of ANC services, prevalence, and factors associated with pre-eclampsia and low Apgar Score among Postn

Partner-Based HIV Treatment for Seroconcordant Couples Attending Antenatal and Postnatal Care in Rural Mozambique: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that a supportive male partner facilitates maternal HIV testing during pregnancy, increases maternal antiretroviral therapy initiation and adherence, and increases HIV-free infant survival. Most male partner engagement clinical strategies have focused on increasing uptake of couple-based HIV testing and counseling. We delivered a couple-based care and treatment intervention to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence in expectant couples living with HIV. METHODS: We implemented a cluster randomized controlled trial for seroconcordant couples living with HIV, co

Reported self-care practice toward prevention of puerperal sepsis and associated factors among postnatal mothers: Community-based cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Puerperal sepsis is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in low-income countries, which can affect sustainable development goals. Even though it is a preventable problem through maternal self-care practices, maternal-reported self-care practices regarding puerperal sepsis were under-researched in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the maternal reported self-care practice and associated factors among postnatal mothers for the prevention of puerperal sepsis. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the reported self-care practice of postnatal mothers in Arb

Effectiveness of the Lactation Education Program on Breastfeeding Levels and Self-Efficacy Among Postnatal Mothers at a Tertiary Care Hospital, Puducherry.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is the ideal food for infants. Breastfeeding self-efficacy strongly influences the initiation, exclusivity, and duration of breastfeeding. Low confidence often leads to early cessation, whereas structured education can enhance maternal skills and success. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 100 postnatal mothers recruited through simple random sampling. Participants were assigned to experimental (n = 50) and control (n = 50) groups using a non-random allocation approach. Breastfeeding performance was assessed at three time points (immediately after

Early Postnatal Outcome and Care after in Utero Exposure to Lithium: A Single Center Analysis of a Belgian Tertiary University Hospital.

Knowledge of the impact of in utero exposure to lithium during the postnatal period is limited. Besides a possible teratogenic effect during the first trimester, exposure during the second and third trimesters might lead to neonatal effects. Uniform guidelines for postnatal management of these neonates are lacking. The aim was to retrospectively describe all neonates admitted to the University Hospitals Leuven after in utero exposure to lithium (January 2010 to April 2020), and to propose a postnatal care protocol. Descriptive statistics were performed. For continuous parameters with serial me

Antenatal and postnatal care: a review of innovative models for improving availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of services in low-resource settings.

UNLABELLED: Key lessons can be drawn from innovative approaches that have been implemented to ensure access to better antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC). This paper examines the successes and challenges of ANC and PNC delivery models in several settings around the world; discusses the lessons to be learned from them; and makes recommendations for future programmes. Based on this review, we conclude that close monitoring of ANC and PNC quality and delivery models, health workforce support, appropriate use of electronic technologies, integrated care, a woman-friendly perspective, and

Antenatal, delivery and postnatal comparisons of maternal satisfaction with two pilot Changing Childbirth schemes compared with a traditional model of care.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate maternal satisfaction with two pilot schemes based on the Changing Childbirth initiative (DoH 1993) and to compare this with a traditional model of care. In addition, a limited number of clinical outcome measures were also assessed. DESIGN: a retrospective between-group design was used. Questionnaire data were collected from three groups (two pilot and one control) about the antenatal, labour and postnatal periods to establish both satisfaction with key objectives of the Changing Childbirth initiative (DoH 1993), and basic clinical outcomes. SETTING: a large Trust (

Husband involvement in postnatal care services utilization and associated factors in Bishoftu Town, Central Ethiopia; community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Both mothers and newborns go through a critical time in their lives during the postnatal period, and the majority of deaths of mothers and neonates happen during this period. Postnatal care is the care given to women and their neonates, starting from delivery to 42 postnatal days. Although the significance of postnatal care in maternal and child health is acknowledged, the influence of husbands in either facilitating or impeding access to these services has been largely unexplored. So it's important to find out husbands' involvement in postnatal care service utilization in Bishoftu

Postnatal care setting and survival after fetoscopic tracheal occlusion for severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) was recently shown to improve postnatal survival in a multicenter, randomized controlled trial of infants with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). However, the external validity of this study remains unclear given a lack of standardization in postnatal management approaches. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of an integrated prenatal and postnatal care setting on survival outcomes in severe CDH after FETO. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and individual participant analysis of FETO outco

Assessment of Cultural Beliefs and Practices During the Postnatal Period Affecting Postpartum Recovery and Its Management in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: The postpartum period is associated with several physiological and nutritional changes, during which women commonly follow culturally influenced dietary practices and traditional beliefs. These practices may influence maternal nutrition, physical activity, and postpartum recovery. The present study aimed to assess cultural beliefs, dietary practices, lifestyle-related factors, myths, and traditional postpartum practices among postnatal women attending a tertiary care hospital, and to examine their association with self-reported postpartum weight change. Impact of Premature Birth and Delayed Cuddling on Maternal Support Needs and Satisfaction With Postnatal Care and Changes in Support Over Time.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and early bonding disruptions such as delayed first cuddling may increase parental vulnerability and support needs in the postnatal period. However, little is known about how these factors interact to shape paternal perceptions of care and unmet support needs across different domains. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study drew on data from 1559 individuals aged 4-52 years and linked parental reports from 940 mothers and 614 fathers. Participants were categorised by gestational age of the children into extremely preterm (≤ 28 weeks), very preterm (29-32 weeks), mod

Improving retention in antenatal and postnatal care: a systematic review of evidence to inform strategies for adolescents and young women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Young pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV (WLHIV) are at high risk of poor outcomes in prevention of mother-to-child transmission services. The aim of this systematic review was to collate evidence on strategies to improve retention in antenatal and/or postpartum care in this population. We also conducted a secondary review of strategies to increase attendance at antenatal care (ANC) and/or facility delivery among pregnant adolescents, regardless of HIV status, to identify approaches that could be adapted for adolescents and young WLHIV. METHODS: Selected databases wer

Women's Experience of Facility-Based Childbirth Care and Receipt of an Early Postnatal Check for Herself and Her Newborn in Northwestern Tanzania.

Negative experiences of care may act as a deterrent to current and/or future utilization of facility-based health services. To examine the situation in Tanzania, we conducted a sub-analysis of a cross-sectional household survey conducted in April 2016 in the Mara and Kagera regions of Tanzania. The sample included 732 women aged 15⁻49 years who had given birth in a health facility during the previous two years. Log binomial regression models were used to investigate the association between women's experiences of care during childbirth and the receipt of early postnatal checks before discharge.

Nurses' and midwives' experiences of providing group antenatal and postnatal care at 18 health centers in Rwanda: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative-Rwanda began a cluster randomized controlled trial of group antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) in Rwanda in 2017. That trial will report its primary outcome, gestational length at birth, after data collection concludes in 2019. This nested study includes providers of ANC and/or PNC at the 18 health centers randomized to provide the group model of ANC/PNC and the 18 health centers randomized to continue providing ANC/PNC in the traditional, individual visit model. The objective of this study is to understand the experiences of prov

The role of community-based health services in influencing postnatal care visits in the Builsa and the West Mamprusi districts in rural Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Globally, maternal mortality is still a challenge. In Ghana, maternal morbidity and mortality rates remain high, particularly in rural areas. Postnatal Care (PNC) is one of the key strategies for improving maternal health. This study examined determinants of at least three PNC visits in rural Ghana. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Zones in the Builsa and West Mamprusi Districts between April and June 2016. We selected 650 women who delivered within 5 years preceding the survey (325 from each of the two sites)
