Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) involves the use of a nontoxic dye or photosensitizer excited with visible light to produce reactive oxygen species that can kill all classes of microorganisms. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) can be used in vivo as an alternative therapeutic strategy to treat localized infections due to its ability to selectively kill microbes while preserving host mammalian cells. aPDI can be potentiated by the addition of the nontoxic inorganic salt potassium iodide (KI). KI is an approved drug for antifungal therapy. The mechanism of potentiation wit

The mechanism by which iodide cures sporotrichosis was postulated to be an improvement in phagocyte-mediated killing of the causal fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. We found that both neutrophils and monocytes could readily kill the fungus and that killing could be blocked by adding inhibitors of oxidative metabolism. Iodide, administered to four volunteers for 1 week, raised their serum iodide level 213-fold but failed to improve killing of S. schenckii by their neutrophils or monocytes in a killing assay in vitro. Furthermore addition of iodide directly to neutrophils at concentrations as high a

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given graded doses of methylmercaptoimidazole (MMI), propylthiouracil (PTU), KClO4 or KI in drinking water for 4 days, or the lowest effective dose of each drug for various times. The rats were sacrificed at 1--2 p.m. and serum T3, T4 and TSH concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassays. It was found that administration of 5 mg/l of MMI, 10 mg/l of PTU and 100 mg/l of KClO4 for 4--14 days induced a transient rise in serum TSH and a fall in serum T3 or T4 or in both. The effects of KI were not consistent. In another series of experiments, PTU (10 mg/l) was giv

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections worldwide, with many hospital-acquired cases linked to biofilm formation on urinary catheter surfaces. The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance limits the effectiveness of conventional antibiotics, and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged as a promising alternative. This approach is based on the combination of a photosensitizer (PS), dioxygen, and visible light to reduce bacterial concentration without promoting resistance. In this study, the potential of aPDT in controlling UTIs was evaluated using a

Treatment of carious root surfaces remains challenging due to the complex pathological processes and difficulty in restoring the original structure of root dentine. Current treatments targeting the de-/re-mineralisation processes are not entirely satisfactory in terms of the protection of the dentinal organic matrix and the highly organised structure of dentine. In this in vitro study, a cross-linking agent - proanthocyanidin (PA) was used in conjunction with a fluoride-based treatment - silver diamine fluoride/potassium iodide (SDF/KI) to putatively stabilise the organic dentinal framework as

BACKGROUND: Diamine silver fluoride (Ag(NH3)2F), referred to as AgF, has been shown to provide a pronounced antimicrobial action against caries. The clinical application of this material has been limited by the staining associated with both teeth and tooth coloured restorative materials. The application of potassium iodide (KI) after AgF eliminates stain formation. The purpose of this study was to determine if a prior application of silver fluoride and potassium iodine to demineralized dentine affected the uptake of strontium and fluoride from a glass ionomer cement restoration.

In radionuclide therapy with iodine-131 labelled pharmaceuticals, free (131)I may be released and trapped by the thyroid, causing an undesirable radiation burden. To prevent this, stable iodide such as potassium iodide (KI) can be given to saturate the thyroid before (131)I is administered. The guidelines of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine do not, however, recommend special precautions when administering (131)I-lipiodol therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. Nevertheless, some authors have reported (131)I uptake in the thyroid as a consequence of such therapy. In this study, the in

Thyroid cancer in children and adolescents has to be considered as the most severe health consequence of a nuclear reactor emergency with release of radioiodine into the atmosphere. High doses of potassium iodide are effective to block radioiodine thyroid uptake and to prevent development of thyroid cancer years later. However, there are controversies concerning thyroid cancer risk induced by radioiodine exposure in adults. Further, the interaction of nutritional supply of potassium iodide and radioiodine uptake as well as the interaction of radioiodine with certain drugs has not been addresse

Feline sporotrichosis is an endemic disease with high occurrence in Brazil. Itraconazole (ITZ) remains the drug of choice for treating this disease in cats, despite the increasing reports of therapeutic failure. A controlled, randomized clinical trial was performed on 166 naive cats with sporotrichosis to assess the effectiveness and safety of the combination therapy with ITZ and potassium iodide (KI) compared with ITZ monotherapy. Cats were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: G1-ITZ 100 mg/cat/day-and G2-ITZ 100 mg/cat/day + KI 2.5-20 mg/kg/day. Cats treated in G2 presented 77% more

Potassium iodide (KI) is a useful drug in the dermatologic armamentarium. It is successfully used for inflammatory dermatoses, most notably erythema nodosum, subacute nodular migratory panniculitis, nodular vasculitis, erythema multiforme, and Sweet's syndrome. KI is also successfully used for cutaneous and lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. The precise mechanism by which KI acts is unknown. Although many minor side effects are common with this drug, major side effects can occur in pregnant patients and those with a history of kidney or thyroid disease. This article reviews the pharmacology, mech
