Early life differences in behavioral predispositions in two Alligatoridae species.

Behavioral predispositions are innate tendencies of animals to behave in a given way without the input of learning. They increase survival chances and, due to environmental and ecological challenges, may vary substantially even between closely related taxa. These differences are likely to be especially pronounced in long-lived species like crocodilians. This order is particularly relevant for comparative cognition due to its phylogenetic proximity to birds. Here we compared early life behavioral predispositions in two Alligatoridae species. We exposed American alligator and spectacled caiman h

Challenges in the interpretation of anticoagulant rodenticide residues and toxicity in predatory and scavenging birds.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are part of the near billion-dollar rodenticide industry. Numerous studies have documented the presence of ARs in nontarget wildlife, with evidence of repeated exposure to second-generation ARs. While birds are generally less sensitive to ARs than target rodent species, in some locations predatory and scavenging birds are exposed by consumption of such poisoned prey and, depending on dose and frequency of exposure, exhibit effects of intoxication that can result in death. Evidence of hemorrhage in conjunction with summed hepatic AR residues >0.1-0.2 mg kg-1 liv

Limb Regeneration and Interference Competition Consequences on Foraging Efficiency of Coccinella undecimpunctata and Hippodamia variegata (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) to Their Prey, Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Regeneration of limbs lost during development has been recorded in a large number of species of hexapoda including many Coccinellids. Although regeneration has obvious survival and fitness benefits, it has also been demonstrated to impose costs on development, reproduction, and behavior. To investigate consequences of regeneration on foraging behavior, Coccinella undecimpunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) larvae were treated to remove one limb, allowed to pupate and regenerate and then prey searching ability assessed. Different densities of adults were placed in Petri dishes with aphi

Interacting Effects of Eyespot Number and Ultraviolet Reflectivity on Predation Risk in Bicyclus anynana (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).

Small marginal eyespots on lepidopteran wings are conspicuous elements that attract a predator's attention to deflect attacks away from the body, but the role of ultraviolet (UV) reflectivity at the center of these patterns and variation in eyespot number in altering the function of eyespots remains unclear. Here, we performed a field-based predation experiment with artificial prey items based on the appearance of squinting bush brown butterflies Bicyclus anynana (Butler, 1879). We tested how two visual properties of the wing pattern affect predation risk: i) the number of eyespots on the vent

A hydrodynamic sensory antenna used by killifish for nocturnal hunting.

The perception of sensory stimuli by an animal requires several steps, commencing with the capture of stimulus energy by an antenna that, as the interface between the physical world and the nervous system, modifies the stimulus in ways that enhance the animal's perception. The mammalian external ear, for example, collects sound and spectrally alters it to increase sensitivity and improve the detection of directionality. In view of the morphological diversity of the lateral-line system across species and its accessibility to observation and experimental intervention, we sought to investigate th

When dinner is dangerous: toxic frogs elicit species-specific responses from a generalist snake predator.

In arms races between predators and prey, some evolved tactics are unbeatable by the other player. For example, many types of prey are inedible because they have evolved chemical defenses. In this case, prey death removes any selective advantage of toxicity to the prey but not the selective advantage to a predator of being able to consume the prey. In the absence of effective selection for postmortem persistence of the toxicity then, some chemical defenses probably break down rapidly after prey death. If so, predators can overcome the toxic defense simply by waiting for that breakdown before c

Sanje mangabey Cercocebus sanjei kills an African crowned eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus.

We present the first ever reported observations of a hunting African crowned eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus being killed by a primate, in the Udzungwa Mountains of south-central Tanzania. An adult female eagle launched an attack on a young Sanje mangabey Cercocebus sanjei who was feeding in a tree, but was intercepted and bitten by an adult mangabey who was feeding nearby. The adult mangabey and the eagle then fell together 25 m to the forest floor below. The eagle subsequently died from her injuries, while the mangabey escaped and is thought to have survived. This rare event is briefly discuss

Comparative reconstruction of the predatory feeding structures of the polyphenic nematode Pristionchus pacificus.

Pristionchus pacificus is a nematode model for the developmental genetics of morphological polyphenism, especially at the level of individual cells. Morphological polyphenism in this species includes an evolutionary novelty, moveable teeth, which have enabled predatory feeding in this species and others in its family (Diplogastridae). From transmission electron micrographs of serial thin sections through an adult hermaphrodite of P. pacificus, we three-dimensionally reconstructed all epithelial and myoepithelial cells and syncytia, corresponding to 74 nuclei, of its face, mouth, and pharynx. Vitamin B12 induces memory of predation through vitellogenin provisioning.

Nutritional effects on trait inheritance are widespread in animals including human famines, representing some of the most severe environmental influences on organismal phenotypes and can be transmitted over generations. However, the chemical nature of the stimuli inducing such memory remains elusive. The nematode Pristionchus pacificus exhibits mouth-form plasticity including predation and responds to a multigenerational Novosphingobium diet with the induction and transgenerational inheritance of the predatory morph. We show that bacteria-derived vitamin B12 is necessary and sufficient for tra

Multi-omics characterization of the necrotrophic mycoparasite Saccharomycopsis schoenii.

Pathogenic yeasts and fungi are an increasing global healthcare burden, but discovery of novel antifungal agents is slow. The mycoparasitic yeast Saccharomycopsis schoenii was recently demonstrated to be able to kill the emerging multi-drug resistant yeast pathogen Candida auris. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the predatory activity of S. schoenii have not been explored. To this end, we de novo sequenced, assembled and annotated a draft genome of S. schoenii. Using proteomics, we confirmed that Saccharomycopsis yeasts have reassigned the CTG codon and translate CTG into serine i

Host Plant Effects on the Functional Response of Scolothrips takahashii to Amphitetranychus viennensis.

The hawthorn spider mite, Amphitetranychus viennensis, can damage various Rosaceae fruit trees. When using predatory natural enemies for biological control, the effects of the physical characteristics of host plant leaves (such as trichomes) on the functional response of predatory natural enemies remain unclear. We studied the functional response of the predatory thrips, Scolothrips takahashii, to feeding on hawthorn spider mite eggs on five host plants (three apple cultivars: Golden Delicious, Fuji, and New Jonagold; peach; and plum). The results revealed that S. takahashii exhibited a typica

Integration of Small- and Wide-Field Visual Features in Target-Selective Descending Neurons of both Predatory and Nonpredatory Dipterans.

For many animals, target motion carries high ecological significance as this may be generated by a predator, prey, or potential mate. Indeed, animals whose survival depends on early target detection are often equipped with a sharply tuned visual system, yielding robust performance in challenging conditions. For example, many fast-flying insects use visual cues for identifying targets, such as prey (e.g., predatory dragonflies and robberflies) or conspecifics (e.g., nonpredatory hoverflies), and can often do so against self-generated background optic flow. Supporting these behaviors, the optic

Eye size across avian lineages covaries with participation in a specialized foraging behaviour.

Foraging ecology and visual ability are often strongly related across animal lineages, as many organisms identify food sources by sight. Birds particularly rely upon vision to seek out prey or other food items, leading to the correlated evolution of eye size and foraging behaviour. Here, we focus on a specialized foraging tactic termed "disturbance foraging," whereby a responding species exploits prey items flushed by a disturbing species. Using global databases of disturbance-responder species and eye size measurements from museum specimens, we tested the prediction that relative eye size acc

Cephalic stimulation of pre-absorptive protein synthesis in Burmese pythons.

Digestion is initiated not only by the presence of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract but also by anticipatory mechanisms collectively termed the cephalic phase. While this feed-forward regulation is well documented in mammals, its physiological significance in ectothermic vertebrates remains poorly understood. We demonstrate that Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) exhibited a robust stimulation of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle in response to mock feeding where snakes were allowed to strike and constrict prey without ingestion. We also provide compelling evidence for similar stimu

Big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) emit intense search calls and fly in stereotyped flight paths as they forage in the wild.

The big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, uses echolocation for orientation and foraging, and scans its surroundings by aiming its sonar beam at obstacles and prey. All call parameters are highly adaptable and determine the bat's acoustic field of view and hence its perception of the echo scene. The intensity (source level) and directionality of the emitted calls directly contribute to the bat's acoustic field of view; however, the source level and directionality of the big brown bat's sonar signals have not been measured in the field. In addition, for bats, navigation and prey capture require that

Multi-trophic effects of ungulate intraguild predation on acorn weevils.

Predators and parasitoids may contribute to controlling the population sizes of phytophagous insects, and this has been shown to benefit plants. Phytophagous insects may also be killed by other herbivores (intraguild predation), usually larger-sized vertebrates that ingest insects accidentally while feeding on common food sources. We studied the intraguild predation on acorn weevils by ungulates and assessed the consequences for weevil populations. Infested acorns are prematurely abscised and the weevil larvae finish their development inside the acorns after being dropped. Our results show tha

Effect of acoustic clutter on prey detection by bats.

Bats that capture animal prey from substrates often emit characteristic echolocation calls that are short-duration, frequency-modulated (FM) and broadband. Such calls seem to be suited to locating prey in uncluttered habitats, including flying prey, but may be less effective for finding prey among cluttered backgrounds because echoes reflecting from the substrate mask the acoustic signature of prey. Perhaps these call designs serve primarily for spatial orientation. Furthermore, it has been unclear whether the acoustic image conveyed by FM echoes enables fine texture discrimination, or whether

Experimental evidence for the rapid evolution of behavioral canalization in natural populations.

Canalization-the evolutionary loss of the capacity of organisms to develop different phenotypes in different environments-is an evolutionary phenomenon suspected to occur widely, although examples in natural populations are elusive. Because behavior is typically a highly flexible component of an individual's phenotype, it provides fertile ground for studying the evolution of canalization. Here we report how snail populations exposed for different lengths of time to a predatory crab introduced from Europe to America exhibit different degrees of canalization of an adaptive antipredator behavior:

Familiarity among kin has minor effects beyond grouping for escape response in a shoaling fish.

Prey have evolved cost-effective antipredator manoeuvres to evade predators, and living in a group is a common strategy employed to improve survival. Associating with familiar conspecifics, particularly kin, may further enhance these strategies by improving the flow of reliable information concerning the type and magnitude of nearby threats. This study investigated the influence of familiarity among shoalmates on the activity and escape responses of a shoaling damselfish. We examined the routine swimming and fast-start response of juvenile spiny Chromis (Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Bleeker 18
