Nitric oxide evaluation in upper and lower respiratory tracts in nasal polyposis.

BACKGROUND: A decrease in nasal nitric oxide (NO) and an increase in exhaled NO have been demonstrated in patients with nasal polyposis (NP). OBJECTIVES: The aims were to evaluate the flux of NO from the three compartments of the respiratory tract, namely, upper nasal, lower conducting and distal airways, and to search for relationships between NO parameters and indexes of upper and lower disease activity (bronchial reactivity and obstruction). The effect of medical treatment of polyposis was also evaluated. METHODS: Seventy patients with polyposis were recruited. At baseline, pulmonary func

Mometasone furoate cream reduces acute radiation dermatitis in patients receiving breast radiation therapy: results of a randomized trial.

PURPOSE: We wanted to confirm the benefit of mometasone furoate (MF) in preventing acute radiation reactions, as shown in a previous study (Boström et al, Radiother Oncol 2001;59:257-265). METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study was a double-blind comparison of MF with D (Diprobase), administered daily from the start of radiation therapy for 5 weeks in patients receiving breast radiation therapy, 40 Gy in 2.67-Gy fractions daily over 3 weeks. The primary endpoint was mean modified Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) score. RESULTS: Mean RTOG scores were significantly less for MF than for D (P=.

Action of topical mometasone on the pigmented halos of micrografting in patients with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a prevalent skin pigmentation disorder worldwide. The treatments available still offer limited results to some patients. For patients with clinically stable vitiligo, melanocyte transplantation is an appropriate treatment option, and the technique of autologous punch grafting shows good repigmentation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of topical mometasone on the halos of repigmentation after autologous punch grafting in patients with clinically stable vitiligo. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2010, 11 patients with clinically stable vitiligo (7 generalized, 2 focal and 2

Mometasone furoate nasal spray is safe and effective for 1-year treatment of children with perennial allergic rhinitis.

OBJECTIVE: Perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) affects children at a young age. Current guidelines recommend intranasal corticosteroids as the first-line treatment in patients with moderate-to-severe or persistent disease or in those who have congestion. In this study, the long-term safety and efficacy of mometasone furoate nasal spray (MFNS) were assessed in children with PAR. METHODS: In this multicenter, active-controlled, evaluator-blind, 12-month study, 255 children aged 6-11 years with a >or=1-year history of PAR were randomized to receive once-daily MFNS 100 microg (n=166) or the active

Topical glucocorticosteroids in rhinitis: clinical aspects.

The introduction of nasal glucocorticosteroids, 30 years ago, has been the most important therapeutic progress in rhinitis management since the introduction of the first generation of antihistamines. Our knowledge of the mode of action of glucocorticosteroids in the nose has improved as the airway mucous membrane of the nose is easily accessible for investigation. However, the exact mechanism behind the marked clinical effect remains unclear. Topical glucocorticosteroids are highly effective in diseases characterized by eosinophil-dominated inflammation (allergic rhinitis, nasal polyposis), bu

Pimecrolimus permeates less than tacrolimus through normal, inflamed, or corticosteroid-pretreated skin.

The permeabilities of normal human and normal, inflamed, or corticosteroid (CS) pretreated skin of young domestic pigs for pimecrolimus and tacrolimus were compared in vitro, using Franz-type diffusion cells. The test articles were either used as 1.0% solutions or as the marketed formulations (Elidel 1% cream, Protopic 0.1%, and 0.03% ointment). In normal human skin, the permeation rate of pimecrolimus from the 1% cream was about sixfold lower than that of tacrolimus from 0.1% ointment and by a factor of 4.3 lower compared with tacrolimus from Protopic 0.03%. In pigs, sodium laurylsulfate-indu

Inhibitory effects of glucocorticoids on rat eosinophil superoxide generation and chemotaxis.

Eosinophil infiltration into inflammatory tissues and the subsequent release of inflammatory mediators are the hallmarks of several inflammatory allergic diseases. Although there have been a considerable number of publications on anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids, little is known about whether glucocorticoids affect the activation of eosinophils directly. We studied the effects of three glucocorticoids, mometasone furoate, dexamethasone and beclomethasone dipropionate, on superoxide generation and the chemotaxis of rat eosinophils. Highly purified rat eosinophils were treated for 6

Comparison of the local and systemic side effects of methylprednisolone aceponate and mometasone furoate applied as ointments with equal antiinflammatory activity.

BACKGROUND: The therapy for skin diseases with topical glucocorticoids is limited by their local and systemic side effects. A glucocorticoid with an improved benefit-to-risk ratio is desirable. OBJECTIVE: A new topical corticoid, methylprednisolone aceponate (MPA) 0.1% ointment, was compared with the same formulation of mometasone furoate. METHODS: The two ointments were compared with respect to suppression of UVB light-induced erythema (n = 20) and with respect to atrophogenicity and appearance of telangiectasia (n = 20) in two double-blind trials with intraindividual comparisons in healthy

Lichen striatus in a pregnant woman.

We report a case of lichen striatus in a 37-year-old woman in the third trimester of pregnancy. She presented at 35 weeks of pregnancy with a 6-week history of a pruritic rash on the left side of her abdomen. Examination revealed an erythematous papular eruption arranged in a linear fashion from the umbilicus to the left mid back. Histological examination demonstrated lichenoid perivascular and periadnexal inflammatory infiltrate and the presence of colloid bodies. The eruption resolved prior to delivery with the application of mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment.
