Blood pressure, heart rate, aortic nerve activity and cervical sympathetic discharge were recorded simultaneously in 10 rabbits. Chronic recordings were made with electrodes implanted to the uncut aortic and cervical sympathetic nerves. 1. The alerting acoustic stimulus produced a short lasting decrease in sympathetic activity with a transient bradycardia. 2. In 6 out of 8 rabbits i.v. administration of naloxone chloride (100 mg/kg) diminished or abolished early inhibitory effects evoked by acoustic stimulus. 3. The sympatho-inhibitory system involved in the startling response appears to be in

The purpose of this study was to investigate baroreflex activity in hypertensive patients with orthostatic hypotension (OH) due to sinoaortic baroreceptor denervation. The study concerned 3 patients (pts), 58-63 years, mean age 60.6 +/- 2 with both arterial hypertension (paroxysms recorded at 250/130 mmHg) and OH. They received radiation therapy to the entire cervical area for neoplasm, 9.6 +/- 2.8 years ago and had a carotid murmur without significant stenosis. Every pt had a severe and symptomatic OH: blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were respectively 163 +/- 17/105 +/- 7, 82 +/- 5 b/

To study the physiological regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), we examined the effects of volume expansion and depletion and the influence of cardiopulmonary baroreflex on plasma ANP levels in pentobarbital-anesthetized male Wistar rats. The volume expansion by acute intravenous saline infusion (2% of body weight) increased central venous pressure (CVP) and decreased heart rate (HR) in rats with intact baroreflex. The plasma ANP level in the volume expanded group was significantly higher than that in the control rats (453 +/- 100 vs 170 +/- 40 pg/ml, p less than 0.01). Conversely t

The vasodilatory response in the renal vascular bed was studied after quick mild hemorrhage under different levels of renal blood flow. In neuraxis intact dogs, the renal vascular resistance increased or decreased within 5 s after hemorrhage and reached a stable level close to the control within 10 s. The responses under neuraxis intact conditions may involve both responses of the renal vascular resistance to changes in renal sympathetic nerve activity caused by the baroreceptor reflex and responses to decrease in renal perfusion pressure after hemorrhage. In order to exclude baroreflex neural

We have studied the effect of the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex on respiration in 10 vagotomized, spontaneously breathing, pentobarbital anesthetized dogs. The carotid body chemoreceptor reflex response was eliminated by surgically excluding the carotid bodies from the carotid sinus baroreceptor area. Steady state frequency, tidal volume, and minute ventilation were measured after 25 mm Hg step changes in intrasinus pressure between 50 and 200 mm Hg. Over this range, the step decreases in intrasinus pressure caused concomitant increases in mean arterial pressure from 86 to 182 mm Hg. All o

Orthostatic hypotension results from an alteration in the baroreflex at any level with subsequent disturbance in blood pressure homeostasis in response to variations. The second part of this reflex arc, from the bulbar vasopressor centre to the peripheral effector sites, can be explored directly by studying the hemodynamic response to an increase in arterial CO2 levels. Normally the response is an increase in blood pressure, but under abnormal conditions there is a reduction. Orthostatic hypotension with a normal hemodynamic response to increased CO2 levels indicates that the first part of the

AIM: The carotid sinuses and aortic arch are baroreceptor-resident arteries (BRAs) and atherosclerosis-susceptible sites of brain-supplying arteries, which would impair baroreflex-mediated blood pressure (BP) regulation and prompt coronary atherosclerosis. We sought to determine the relationship between total atherosclerosis burden (TAB) of BRAs and coronary atherosclerosis burden (AB) in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD) and explore the potential contribution of BP profiles to this relationship.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis of patients with ICVD who simultane

OBJECTIVE: Baroreflex is a regulatory mechanism that slows the fetal heart rate. This study aimed to investigate the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemia on fetal baroreceptor sensitivity in preterm fetal sheep.
METHODS: The changes in fetal baroreceptor sensitivity were measured in seven chronically instrumented preterm fetal sheep. Fetal baroreceptor sensitivity was measured in three phases: (A) control phase, defined as the 24 h before the first injection of LPS; (B) acute phase, defined as the 24 h between the first and second injections of LPS; and (C) fetal acidosis p

The sympathetic nervous system plays a pivotal role in the long-term regulation of arterial blood pressure through the ability of the central nervous system to integrate neurohumoral signals and differentially regulate sympathetic neural input to specific end organs. Part 1 of this review will discuss neural mechanisms of salt-sensitive hypertension, obesity-induced hypertension, and the ability of prior experiences to sensitize autonomic networks. Part 2 of this review focuses on new therapeutic advances to treat resistant hypertension including renal denervation and carotid baroactivation. B

Enhanced sympathetic outflow to the heart and resistance vessels greatly contributes to the onset and maintenance of neurogenic hypertension. There is a consensus that the development of hypertension (clinical and experimental) is associated with an impairment of sympathetic reflex control by arterial baroreceptors. More recently, chronic peripheral chemoreflex activation, as observed in obstructive sleep apnea, has been proposed as another important risk factor for hypertension. In this review, we present and discuss recent experimental evidence showing that changes in the respiratory pattern

Baroreceptor sensitivity and carotid sinus distensibility were lower in patients with angina associated with significant coronary artery disease than in patients with vasospastic angina. Baroreceptor sensitivity was significantly correlated with carotid sinus distensibility in both groups of patients.

By recording single-unit discharge from the carotid sinus nerve of normal dogs in the control and in the volume-expanded state, both with the sinus open to the circulation and with it isolated, the effects of acute volume expansion on baroreceptor discharge sensitivity were investigated. The carotid sinus was vascularly isolated except for the common carotid and external carotid arteries. Inflation of hydraulic occluders on these vessels completely isolated the sinus from the systemic circulation. Flow and diameter changes of the carotid sinus were measured. Plasma volume was expanded with iso

High renin hypertension is usually accompanied by impairment of the baroreceptor reflexes. This feature has been mostly ascribed to overactivity of the renin-angiotensin system. However, renal nerves could also modulate the baroreceptor reflexes. In the present experiments, the effect of renal denervation on the depressed baroreceptor reflexes was studied in rats subjected to aortic ligation between the renal arteries. Renal denervation of the ischemic kidney was performed at the same time as aortic ligation. The resulting effects on arterial pressure, heart rate, plasma renin activity, and ba

A study of 115 patients with rheumatic heart disease associated with arterial hypertension revealed significant changes of functioning of depressor kallikrein-kinin system of the kidneys and blood. The period of formation of arterial hypertension is already distinguished by an exhaustion of the depressor systems manifested in a marked reduction of the kallikrein excretion in response to physical loads and a reduction of the extracellular volume deteriorating in the course of stabilization of arterial hypertension.

Stimulation of left atrial volume receptors in the dog suppresses arginine vasopressin (AVP) release. Whether the same mechanism is valid in nonhuman primates and in humans is unclear. In order to investigate whether changes in low-pressure baroreceptor stimulation influence AVP release in humans, we utilized different experimental models (water immersion, lower body positive and negative pressure, and negative pressure breathing) to induce systematic changes in central venous pressure. In an additional study, carotid baroreceptors were selectively stimulated by neck suction in order to evalua

In 14 anesthetized male rabbits subjected bilateral renal wrapping 12 weeks before, the baroreflex control of heart rate (HR), hindlimb vascular resistance (HVR) and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) was examined during arterial baroreceptor loading and unloading by injecting phenylephrine (PE) and nitroprusside (NP). The results were as follows: (1) The mean arterial pressure (131 +/- 9 mmHg) of the kidney-wrapped rabbits was significantly higher than that (95 +/- 10 mmHg) of the control rabbits (P less than 0.001). (2) With the buffer nerves intact, the baroreflex control of HR was obv

The effects evoked by 1 min occlusions of the common carotids were studied in 16 spontaneously breathing pentobarbitone anesthetized cats. Unilateral occlusions induced increases in systemic arterial pressure (to 111.5% of basal), but no changes in ventilation. Bilateral occlusions provoked larger increases in systemic arterial pressure (to 137.5% of basal) and mild tachycardia, associated with pulmonary and alveolar hyperventilation. Breath-by-breath minute volume augmented (to an averaged maximum of 144.7% of basal), the increase in tidal volume being more important than that of respiratory
