Prison connectivity and disease transmission to neighboring communities: The role of prison staff.

Using smartphone location data and a novel application of publicly available employment data, we map how California communities are connected to nearby prisons through the movement of prison staff, and we measure the role these connections play in spreading infectious diseases. Leveraging an exogenous prisoner transfer-induced COVID-19 outbreak at San Quentin state prison in June 2020 as a quasiexperiment, we examine the unidirectional spread of the disease from the prison to surrounding communities. This outbreak was unique: its origin from outside Northern California was clearly documented a

[Medical care in prisons-legal framework, structure, and the role of the prison physician].

The medical care of prisoners in the German correctional system has traditionally taken place within a parallel structure, characterized by specific actors, regulations, and conditions. In light of the serious challenges in recruiting medical personnel for correctional facilities, cooperation with the public health system is becoming increasingly important. This is evident, for example, in the growing reliance on private (specialist) physicians and in the establishment of specially secured hospital rooms for the inpatient treatment of prisoners in public hospitals.International frameworks such

Health-promoting prisons in the female estate: an analysis of prison inspection data.

BACKGROUND: Women in prison have comparatively greater health needs than men, often compounded by structures and policies within the prison system. The notion of a 'health-promoting' prison is a concept which has been put forward to address health inequalities and health deterioration in prisons. It has, however, not been fully discussed in relation to women in prison. The paper aims to distil the learning and evidence in relation to health promotion in female prisons using prison inspection reports of women's prisons in England and Wales. METHODS: Prison inspection reports are one way of asc

[Risk behaviours and Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence in prisoners by length of stay in prison].

Monitoring its prevalence will help to reduce infection rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study from a convenience sample of prisoners aged 18-25 years. Urine samples were obtained to determine CT. A standardized and anonymous questionnaire was used to collect the study variables. RESULTS: The overall CT prevalence was 11%, significantly higher in those with less than one year in prison, who also presented higher

The impact of prison staff responses on self-harming behaviours: prisoners' perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: To further understanding of how health and correctional staff responses to self-harming behaviours influence prisoners and their subsequent actions. DESIGN: Participant-centred, qualitative methods were used to explore the complex and under-researched perspectives of self-harming male prisoners. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 adult male prisoners who had engaged in repetitive, non-suicidal self-harm during their current prison sentence, or considered doing so. The interviews were analyzed drawing on principles of thematic analysis and discourse analysis

Development of a Dementia Education Workshop for Prison Staff, Prisoners, and Health and Social Care Professionals to Enable Them to Support Prisoners With Dementia.

The world's prison population is aging. Older prisoners, those aged 50 years and older, are at risk of poor health and developing a dementia. Prisoners with dementia may present challenges to the regime within the prison and require extra support. However, prison staff and health and social care professionals have reported a lack of skills and knowledge to identify and support prisoners with dementia. This may be due to a lack of dementia education programs developed specifically for the prison setting and delivered comprehensively for all who work with prisoners. The aim of this article is to

Prisoners' experience of health self-management: A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Among the noninstitutionalized population, health care is increasingly shifting from a paternalistic model toward promoting patients' involvement in decision-making and in managing their condition. This paradigm shift toward health self-management is less applicable to individuals in prison whose health management choices are limited. The aim of this study was to explore prisoners' health self-management needs and the strategies used to maintain health self-management in a highly restrictive prison environment. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenological study design was selected for this

Prisoners' perceptions of the healthcare service: A qualitative study.

It is recognized that the health of those in prison is poorer than the general population. The objective of this research is to understand the perceptions of the prisoners of the health care that they received at a district level prison in Thailand. We conducted a qualitative study, using in-depth interviews. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The participants were 13 prisoners. The findings reveal the prisoners have positive attitudes toward health services. They think that they are receiving the same standard of care as the general population. However, they are concerned about gett

Predicting mental health of prisoners by artificial neural network.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining and improving prisoners' health and their rehabilitation can be effective steps towards eliminating health inequalities and approaching the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Accordingly, identifying protective factors and health barriers of this vulnerable group and changing the prison into an environment that can deliver health interventions tailored to the needs of inmates can provide the basis for attaining justice in health. PURPOSE: This study builds on an artificial neural network model to determine the effect of demographic, psychological, criminological, an

Functional disability, depression, and suicidal ideation in older prisoners.

BACKGROUND: The population of older prisoners (age ≥50), a group with high suicide rates, is growing. We sought to explore the associations among functional disability, depression, and suicidal ideation (SI) among older prisoners, focusing on the mediating role of depression. METHODS: Study participants were 220 sentenced male inmates age ≥50 who were incarcerated in 8 prisons. Face-to-face interviews were conducted following consent. Functional disability was assessed objectively, using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and via self-report by asking participants their level of d

[Mental disorders and criminal recidivism in male juvenile prisoners].

UNLABELLED: Mental disorders and criminal recidivism in male juvenile prisoners Abstract. OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric disorders in juvenile prisoners exhibit a very high prevalence. However, it remains unclear whether this goes along with increased criminal recidivism rates. METHODS: Between August 1, 2010 and October 31, 2012 all male juvenile inmates of the youth penitentiary of the Canton of Zurich were psychiatrically evaluated at admittance (N = 122). Psychiatric disorders were determined on the basis of a standardized diagnostic interview. Information on recidivism within one year after rel

Fanning the Flames: Understanding Gang Involvement Among Philippine Prisoners.

Utilizing intensive interview and observational data from inmates in one of the most overcrowded and underresourced jail in Metro Manila, Philippines, this study presents the first in-depth analysis of the factors associated with pangkat (prison gangs) and querna (nongang affiliation) membership. The results suggest that inmates join pangkats to ensure their safety and survival. In contrast, those who remain unaffiliated do so given their negative perceptions of the pangkat, sufficient access to social support, and desire to maintain their preprison identity. Furthermore, these major themes ar

Comparing GBMI and non-GBMI Female Prisoners in Michigan.

The guilty but mentally ill (GBMI) verdict was first adopted in Michigan in part to provide treatment for offenders suffering from mental illness. Currently, little is known of its impact among women prisoners. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to explore if GBMI women (n = 30) spent more time on acute and residential treatment program (RTP) units in prison and/or had a higher number of violence tickets, compared with matched guilty mentally ill prisoners (non-GBMI, n = 30). The secondary aim was to characterize Axis I and Axis II disorders in GBMI female prisoners. Finally, we anal
