Art therapy in prisons remains widely under-researched in Australia and beyond and represents a major gap in the literature. Despite evidence that art therapy can be a tool for social change, to date, there are no recorded studies in Australia which have investigated the therapeutic benefits of art in prison populations with measured outcomes. Literary analysis suggests that research tends to be hampered by limitations in methodological approaches that are suited to prison environments. By engaging "inside" with inmates over the course of an 8-week art therapy program, this research design add

Custodial death is generally linked in the public mind with police brutality and torture, not with indirect brutality through negligence and callous treatment in jail custody. Yet it is not known how many of the thousands of prisoners who die in our jails every year die due to neglect by the jail authorities. The official Prison Statistics India (PSI) in its most recent report states that 1,879 men and women died due to "natural causes" in prisons across India in 2021. Natural causes are defined in the report as "illness" and "ageing". According to the report, 185 more prisoners died of "unnat

PURPOSE: New South Wales (NSW) correctional system houses 30% of prisoners in Australia and at this time has only had a single documented case of COVID-19 amongst its prisoner population. The coordinated response by Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (The Network) undertaken with the support of NSW Ministry of Health, in partnership with Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW), Youth Justice and private jails has ensured that the NSW correctional system has remained otherwise COVID-free.

Despite the fact that a large portion of the prison population is made up of people who use and inject drugs, harm reduction continues to be extremely limited in prison settings. This article begins with a review of drug-related incarceration, drug use in prisons, and HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) prevalence among prisoners globally. It presents the scientific evidence, alongside legal and economic arguments supporting the provision of harm reduction to people who use drugs, both inside and outside of prisons. The article then provides a global overview of the availability, accessibility, and qual

OBJECTIVE: High rates of mental disorders have been reported for prison populations worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The present study aimed to establish prevalence rates of mental disorders in Chilean prisoners.
METHOD: A nationwide random sample of 1008 prisoners was assessed in 7 penal institutions throughout Chile. Twelve-month prevalence rates were established using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and compared to the prevalence rates previously published for the general population.
RESULTS: Prevalence rates were 12.2% (95% CI,

BACKGROUND: Tattooing in prison represents a unique combination of risk factors for blood borne virus (BBV) transmission because it is illicitly performed by untrained operators with homemade, unsterile, and frequently-shared equipment. It occurs in a setting where a high proportion of people are already infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other BBVs.
OBJECTIVES: This study measured the frequency of tattoo acquisition by prisoners inside and outside prison, and the associations between tattooing, injecting drug use, and HCV infection risk.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducte

BACKGROUND: Besides some cases reported by the media in recent years about prison inmates who committed suicide, hardly anything is known concerning social, criminological and psychiatric characteristics of suicide victims in jails and prisons in Austria. It therefore seems necessary to evaluate jail and prison suicides in order to establish effective means of prevention.
METHODS: A study was conducted evaluating all suicides in Austrian prisons between 1975 and 1999. In addition to nationality, education and working status, other indicators of social integration and psychiatric history of su

In March 2025 the French Minister of Justice announced that, beginning at the end of July 2025, the prisons of Vendin-le-Vieil and Condé-sur-Sarthe would host approximately 200 individuals convicted of drug trafficking within newly established units specifically designed to address organized crime. Incarceration conditions in these high-security facilities will be extremely strict, with the explicit goal of severing incarcerated people's contact with the outside world. The detrimental effects of solitary confinement on incarcerated people's health are well-documented, and numerous internationa

What is already known about the topic? Autistic people are reported to offend at lower or comparable rates to non-autistic people. However, autism is overrepresented within male prisons due to a number of suggested reasons including an increased chance of being caught and a lack of autistic sensitive interventions which lead to longer stays in prison. To the authors' knowledge, no papers currently exist focussing on autistic females in prison. What does this paper add? To the authors' knowledge, this is the first piece of research to solely include autistic females in prison settings. This res

BACKGROUND: The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has been long regarded for its progressive policy approach to health promotion in prison. It is one of the few countries with a strategic plan for health promotion implementation. Given the paucity of understanding in relation to the concept of a health promoting prison, this study assessed routinely collected prison inspection data to understand and distil learning in regard the practical implementation of health-promoting prisons.
METHODS: Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland (HMIPS) oversees the independent inspection of all pr

Through the case study of Kyrgyzstan this paper argues that a rapidly increasing availability of drugs in prison is not necessarily deleterious to solidarity and inmate codes. Instead, the fragmentary effect of drugs depends on the forms of prisoner control over drug sale and use. In Kyrgyzstan, prisoners co-opted heroin and reorganized its distribution and consumption through non-market mechanisms. State provision of opioid maintenance therapy incentivized powerful prisoners to move to distributing heroin through a mutual aid fund and according to need. Collectivist prison accommodation, high

ACCESSIBLE SUMMARY: Little is known about how the prison environment may impact upon the mental health of adult prisoners. This paper highlights that prisoners perceive that the prison environment has a negative influence upon their mental health. However, a small number regarded prison as a place of respite, which afforded structure and an opportunity to access health services. There is a need for more research in this area specifically relating to the impact the prison climate may have upon those from black and minority ethic groups. Nurses must recognize the aspects of the prison environmen

The purpose of the study was to establish the proportion of remanded and convicted prisoners who were known from their records to have a psychiatric history. The inmate medical records of 834 out of 864 inmates resident on one day at HM Prison, Leeds, were studied. There was a recorded history of 23 per cent having seen a psychiatrist, 15 per cent having taken drugs and 16 per cent having a history of depression or self-harm. Out of 43 inmates interviewed, 18 admitted to failing to report such a history upon reception. There were eight former long-stay psychiatric patients, but only two of the

Mandatory drug testing is commonly used in Australian prisons to detect and deter drug use. In this commentary, we review the limited evidence for mandatory drug testing programs, highlight potential harms associated with their implementation and provide recommendations for drug surveillance in prisons concordant with a harm minimisation framework.

The misuse of pregabalin (Lyrica) has emerged as a common problem in recent years, particularly among vulnerable populations. This reality is reflected in the prison environment, where pregabalin is subject to abuse and trafficking. In this article, we detail the issues surrounding this misuse and our practical strategy for tackling it. It is based on four axes: a) clarification of the indication (or lack thereof); b) support of withdrawal with gabapentin; c) if applicable, management of the symptoms or diseases mentioned (neuropathic pain, epilepsy, etc.) with other treatments, and finally d)

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Little is published about pregnant women in custody. Existing data on the prevalence of substance use among incarcerated pregnant women or their needs are scant. This study sought to determine the prevalence and characteristics of women with substance use histories who present to prison pregnant in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective review of prison medical health records was completed for pregnant women entering New South Wales custodial settings between January 2020 and June 2021.
RESULTS: We identified 158 prison receptions among 1
