Attention, awareness of contingencies, and control in spatial localization: a qualitative difference approach.

The qualitative difference method for distinguishing between aware and unaware processes was applied here to a spatial priming task. Participants were asked simply to locate a target stimulus that appeared in one of four locations, and this target stimulus was preceded by a prime in one of the same four locations. The prime location predicted the location of the target with high probability (p = .75), but prime and target mismatched on a task-relevant feature (identity, color). Across 5 experiments, we observed repetition costs in the absence of awareness of the contingency, and repetition ben

Prediction of post-traumatic stress disorder in family members of ICU patients: a machine learning approach.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can affect family members of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Easily accessible patient's and relative's information may help develop accurate risk stratification tools to direct relatives at higher risk of PTSD toward appropriate management. METHODS: PTSD was measured 90 days after ICU discharge using validated instruments (Impact of Event Scale and Impact of Event Scale-Revised) in 2374 family members. Various supervised machine learning approaches were used to predict PTSD in family members and evaluated on an independent he

Deep learning prediction of post-SBRT liver function changes and NTCP modeling in hepatocellular carcinoma based on DGAE-MRI.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) produces excellent local control for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the risk of toxicity for normal liver tissue is still a limiting factor. Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models have been proposed to estimate the toxicity with the assumption of uniform liver function distribution, which is not optimal. With more accurate regional liver functional imaging available for individual patient, we can improve the estimation and be more patient-specific. PURPOSE: To develop normal tissue complication probab

The science of choosing the right decision threshold in high-stakes diagnostics.

Many diagnostic tasks require that a threshold be set to convert evidence that is a matter of degree into a positive or negative decision. Although techniques of decision analysis used in psychology help one select the particular threshold that is appropriate to a given situation and purpose, just the concept of adjusting the threshold to the situation is not appreciated in many important practical arenas. Testing for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and for dangerous flaws in aircraft structures are used here as illustrations. This article briefly reviews the relevant techniques and dev

[Arrangements for and probabilistic prognosis by schizophrenic patients].

The authors created in experimental conditions different sets: in one case sets for guessing accidental successive stimula, in others--to situations "play with an opponent". It was established that paranoid schizophrenic patients with a short period of the disease create their prognoses on the basis of a probability structure to produced stimula. In a protracted form of the disease the outcome of experience (to win--to lose) becomes more significant. In simple forms of schizophrenia the capability of making a prognosis appears to be more impaired. These disturbances are related either to the a

Medical AI, inductive risk and the communication of uncertainty: the case of disorders of consciousness.

Some patients, following brain injury, do not outwardly respond to spoken commands, yet show patterns of brain activity that indicate responsiveness. This is 'cognitive-motor dissociation' (CMD). Recent research has used machine learning to diagnose CMD from electroencephalogram recordings. These techniques have high false discovery rates, raising a serious problem of inductive risk. It is no solution to communicate the false discovery rates directly to the patient's family, because this information may confuse, alarm and mislead. Instead, we need a procedure for generating case-specific proba

Individual differences in probabilistic learning and updating predictive representations in individuals with obsessive-compulsive tendencies.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive (OC) tendencies involve intrusive thoughts and rigid, repetitive behaviours that also manifest at the subclinical level in the general population. The neurocognitive factors driving the development and persistence of the excessive presence of these tendencies remain highly elusive, though emerging theories emphasize the role of implicit information processing. Despite various empirical studies on distinct neurocognitive processes, the incidental retrieval of environmental structures in dynamic and noisy environments, such as probabilistic learning, has received

Statistical Learning of Orthographic Regularities in Chinese Children With and Without Dyslexia.

This study examined distributional statistical learning of positional, phonetic, and semantic regularities of an artificial orthography in Chinese children aged 8-10 years: 29 with dyslexia, 29 age-matched controls, and 30 reading-level matched controls. Despite having positional regularity learning performance comparable to the controls, the children with dyslexia were poorer at learning left-right structured characters than top-bottom structured characters in high- and low-consistency conditions. Moreover, they showed difficulties in mapping a given sound or meaning to a specific character c

A probabilistic contrast model of causal induction.

Deviations from the predictions of covariational models of causal attribution have often been reported in the literature. These include a bias against using consensus information, a bias toward attributing effects to a person, and a tendency to make a variety of unpredicted conjunctive attributions. It is contended that these deviations, rather than representing irrational biases, could be due to (a) unspecified information over which causal inferences are computed and (b) the questionable normativeness of the models against which these deviations have been measured. A probabilistic extension

AI-enabled forecasting of prehospital transfusion needs in patients with trauma: a multinational, registry-based, retrospective, machine learning development and validation study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality, with haemorrhage representing a leading preventable cause of early death. Timely blood transfusion is a crucial intervention, but current prehospital decision-making tools are scarce. Conventional triggers, such as haemoglobin concentrations, are often unreliable in the acute setting. There is a clear need for more robust, data-driven methods to guide transfusion decisions before hospital arrival. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, machine learning development and validation study to predict the need for prehospital tr

Machine learning for personalized antimicrobial susceptibility breakpoints.

OBJECTIVES: Infection diagnoses are critical to the personalized interpretation of EUCAST aminopenicillin breakpoints for Enterobacterales, but microbiology laboratories cannot predict diagnosis when specimens are received. Here, we assess whether machine learning could facilitate personalized antimicrobial susceptibility breakpoint reporting by predicting urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnoses. METHODS: XGBoost models were trained using open-source electronic healthcare record data to predict complicated UTI in patients with Enterobacterales bacteriuria and to predict UTI in patients with E

Convolutional Neural Networks for Segmentation of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: Analysis of Probability Map Thresholds (CALGB 30901, Alliance).

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is the most common form of malignant mesothelioma, with exposure to asbestos being the primary cause of the disease. To assess response to treatment, tumor measurements are acquired and evaluated based on a patient's longitudinal computed tomography (CT) scans. Tumor volume, however, is the more accurate metric for assessing tumor burden and response. Automated segmentation methods using deep learning can be employed to acquire volume, which otherwise is a tedious task performed manually. The deep learning-based tumor volume and contours can then be compare

UD-Gaussian: Uncertainty-Driven Gaussian Modeling for Occluded Person Re-Identification.

Occluded person re-identification aims to address the identification challenges posed by pedestrians obscured by other individuals or objects. Existing methods often rely on incorporating pose or semantic information to improve model performance under occlusion. However, such information often depends on external models with inevitably cross-domain gaps, whose stability is limited in complex occlusion environments and prone to false results. In this paper, we propose a Transformer-based uncertainty-driven Gaussian model, termed as UD-Gaussian. Firstly, to enrich the detailed features of pedest

Carry-over effect of learned distractor suppression on visual working memory.

Recent research has demonstrated that visual statistical learning guides attentional priority by proactively suppressing locations where distractors are more frequent. While there is evidence to suggest that both attention and working memory (WM) consume a common pool of cognitive resources, there is limited evidence on the nature of the interaction between the learned distractor suppression and WM. The present study investigated whether the learned spatial suppression of an external distractor has a carry-over effect that impairs the WM representation of objects encoded at that location. Acro

End-to-end vs. human-defined feature extraction: comparing deep learning approaches for age classification using mandibular third molars.

Accurate age classification using mandibular third molar radiographs is crucial for legal and forensic applications. This study evaluated different methods for classifying age as under or over 18 years in a Thai population. We compared three approaches: (i) a traditional human-based method using a modified Demirjian classification adapted for mandibular third molars, (ii) an end-to-end deep learning model in which a convolutional neural network (CNN) directly predicts age group, and (iii) a human-defined feature extraction approach, where a CNN estimates tooth developmental stages that are sub

Early adversity and learning: implications for typical and atypical behavioral development.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience early adversity often develop emotion regulatory problems, but little is known about the mechanisms that mediate this relation. We tested whether general associative learning processes contribute to associations between adversity, in the form of child maltreatment, and negative behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Eighty-one participants between 12 and 17 years of age were recruited for this study and completed a probabilistic learning Task. Forty-one of these participants had been exposed to physical abuse, a form of early adversity. Forty additional participants

Investigating the effects of orexin receptor 1 antagonism on decision making under uncertainty.

Orexins/hypocretins are neuropeptides produced by several thousand neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. They project widely through the central nervous system where they release orexins which bind to two regionally selective G-protein coupled receptors: OX1R and OX2R. Orexins are well known as regulators of the sleep/wake cycle, however, recent investigations into orexinergic modulation of feeding and drug-seeking behaviour suggest they also play a role in reward processing and decision making. In the present study, we investigated the effects of OX1R antagonism on goal-directed decision makin
